Saturday - A Pre-Match Plea

It's been well documented on here and social media that the Ashton Gate atmosphere hasn't quite been what it can be over the last 7/8 months, and there have been various different attempts to improve it, one of which closing the bars 15 mins before KO to ensure people take their seats early.

The atmosphere against West Brom was very good and pulled the players through, you could see how appreciative they were at the end from their reactions, and the same needs to happen again Saturday in front of what looks like will be a sell out Ashton Gate.

My request, however, is this — before the Man City game we had the music turned off and didn't have Downsy screaming down the mic at us informing us of the date umpteen times, and the atmosphere pre-match was very decent and set the tone as the players came out. Can we do the same again @Matt Parsons BCFCSLO? It gives people an incentive to go to their seats rather than staying in the concourse with a pint. Even if our support gives an extra 1% Saturday to the players that could well be the difference, we need to make use of home advantage again as that seems to be beyond us this season.

Cheers.

I've got to be honest, I've always taken my seat just as the players enter the pitch. There is just no reason to take my seat before that time. Infact the entrance music is my cue to leave the concourse.

Saturdays game is not going to change that.

As have I mate, I rarely arrive at AG before 2:55 and rarely stay in my seat at HT as I find all the pre-match and half time ongoings are getting more and more Americanised and a little bit like the Reading FC matchday experience whenever I've visited as an away fan.

Agree see no reason to get to my seat any earlier, the music just blares out and kills any atmosphere anyway

It's not rocket science to select tunes that are football related that could be played, but then maybe it is to some?

Just switch it off tbh.

The odd City related, football related or song conducive to atmosphere maybe considered but beyond that? Just switch it off!

The good work of bars and outlets shutting 15 mins before, encouraging people to take seats early- is to a decent extent cancelled out by unrelated music blaring out pre game.

@BessexRED Norwich at home decent no? Back in December. Huddersfield under the lights okay at times in the Cup. Swansea had a nice edge to it let's say, always helps with atmosphere, and QPR 2nd half pretty loud. That is in addition to West Brom.

After the Korey injury v Reading it got very loud for a few mins afterwards I thought. Nice to see a bit of the old AG hostility back- didn't their number 16, I think it was Baker get booed with some vigour, some venom every time he approached the South Stand, let alone touched the ball. Lasted a few mins that, overall atmosphere Friday? Well I've seen worse for a midday but it wasn't stellar.

As has been mentioned above, many people don’t take their seats until the last minute. This isn’t surprising as the concourse and fans village are more interesting if you want to talk to fellow supporters. To get people to get to their seat early we need something interesting pre-match, such as Monkey Tennis

At Hillsborough yesterday, you could actually have a conversation whilst the music was playing before the game.....then you had a pretty noisy bit of music as the players came out.

The music played at Ashton Gate is far too loud......and so is that announcer

My request is to score three goals in the first 18 minutes. Might just explain a good atmosphere more than the music played or whether an extra pint is consumed before taking your seat.

Of course 3 goals in the first 18 would be fantastic- but realistically we can hope and wish but demand or expectations like that just unrealistic IMO. More likely. fans will need to stick with team, show patience- won't be easy but I think in a game like this a noisy atmosphere from the getgo quite important.

Club should do all they can to facilitate this- shutting bars and fanzone, encouraging fans to take seats 15 mins early, opening up some seats in the Atyeo all helps- just hope they can shut off the music 10-15 before the game too!

Of course the players have to leave it all on the pitch- but definitely I credit the club here.

I've always wondered why you need music played at football. What does it actually do apart from destroy a natural atmosphere?

It's the same as when you are in a pub...everyone chatting and creating a natural atmosphere, then boom...some idiot sticks a duke box on. Atmosphere dead...everyone stops talking.

Has anyone club done any actual market research on this?

Or like most things...they think blaring music creates and atmosphere?

Because it actually has the reverse effect.

Can’t agree with pub analogy....you have to have some decent background music at least otherwise it becomes a sterile ‘Wetherspoons’ atmosphere.

as others have said, if you are going to play music at the gate....make it football/city related

Okay slight conspiracy theory time. *Puts on tin hat*

Given how paranoid authorities are, have been about hooliganism, trouble in the game etc etc-they have perhaps associated passionate and noisy fans with hooliganism, ultras all that crap- don't mean us I mean football clubs, authorities in general.

Music kills dead that chance to create, to build a natural atmosphere pre-game- certainly how loud it is at AG. A lot of people give up.

Given the historically incorrect connection of some between noisy fans and troublesome fans, loud overpowering non relevant music helps to sanitise, to kill dead the chances of a noisy pre-game atmosphere. Why bother when you won't be heard?

Or more mundanely, it's an Americanisation of entertainment industry. Can only assume it came in with all-seater stadia?

I do like the ‘Galvanise’ video that they have been playing on the screen before KO lately though, always a good tune to inspire and some great memories too from over the years.

Totally agree, seeing some of our finest moments on the screen minutes for the game always raises a smile and gives an extra enthusiasm for what’s about to happen on the pitch.

Would never get in the ground 15 mins early though, I support the team from the moment they enter the field until the end of the game....

Ok, what I actually mean is I support from the 1st minute to the 40th, have a beer, support from the 46th minute until full time.

Disagree...I don't drink in Weatherspoons, so have no idea what they are like.

Pubs are for meeting and socialising. Talking and drinking...you can listen to music at home with a drink.

Football is the same...it's about supporting your team and communicating with fellow supporters.

You don't need music to generate an atmosphere. It's totally false and manufactured if you do.

Spot on Phants - at Ibrox they bang out songs just related to Rangers for about an hour before KO and it generates a fantastic atmosphere ..... they are all songs related to the club and chants that their fans sing at every game, it sounds awesome...

Here’s a selection .....

I totally agree...buy ticket, eat and drink on concourse, sit and watch game.

Unfortunately...the players and 'club' want the fans to generate noise and support...however that isn't going to happen if they serve up a Shopping Mall atmosphere beforehand. Catch 22.
