When the Basketball have their arena, maybe they can start pushing for the slot if third most supported team in Bristol ?

Back in the late 70s they were out-supported by the Bulldogs (they were a speedway team for you young 'uns) at their own ground (I know,  it wasn't theirs but they like to think it was).

Intimidating in that you have a genuine chance of injury, after the stairs collapse or the roof caves in on your head

I must admit that "Santa's Grotto" looks an intimidating experience on top of the painful dihorrea enduced stomach cramps endured from the fake fanta and stale crisps and then fondled and fisted by their best Jimmy Saville impersonator.

Yes; a very daunting place to visit.

The Fewers chatting about the ‘Gas Hard men’ over the years.....

https://gaschat.co.uk/thread/17784/football-hard-men?page=2

One of the belters seems to think David Pipe (bald midget) is a ‘Hard Man’ the same bloke who got sent down for smashing a Wine bottle over someone’s head on a night out.

Yeah proper hard that is.

F’ing Coward.

I never understood motorcycle speedway as a spectator sport.

Really? A loud, noisy spectacle with risk and close racing.

I'd sooner understand your view if you were talking about horse racing. Spend all day at a track and see horses run past maybe a dozen times, while stood next to idiots on the pi**.

Of course, all IMHO.

Have you ever seen it live? It’s not my thing either, but I did go to watch it at Eastville a couple of times, and must admit it was quite exciting. Noise, smell speed etc.

Feel the same about powerboat racing: not something I’d ever watch on TV, or go out of my way to, but in Bristol Docks it was something else.

wasnt it deemed too dangerous to continue?

Not just ‘deemed’: it was! There were several fatalities I seem to recall. Misjudge slightly and they’d hit the dock wall at 100mph.

I know we grumble about health and safety gone mad sometimes, but that was the other extreme!

Even more exciting at the Knowle track. Shorter straights and tighter corners. Oh, and we made a relative fortune returning discarded lemonade bottles to the kiosk and pocketing the deposits. Profitable Friday nights.

I remember reading that an American champion (Seebold?) came to see the track for the first time and thought it was just where they practiced, asked where the real track was. :) My dad was in the RNR at the time and we used to get on to the HMS Venturer and watch from the deck, it was pretty hair raising seeing the Formula one boats going past so close to the hull!

Christ, and I thought I was getting on.

Saw the remnants as a kid but believe it shut up shop shortly before I was born.

Recently came across an old map of now defunct racetracks (both dogs and speedway,) and unbelievable how many there were and also where they were around the UK. I recall my old man saying just how big the dogs and speedway were in comparison to football, at how folks used to GO OUT to spectator events all the time rather than sit at home. Different era.

Potentially one of the more winnable games for the fewers, Doncaster form is pretty dire

Trouble is that none of the other dead men down there have particularly winnable games either: Wimbledon v Fleetwood, Burton v Swindon, Hull v Northampton, Rochdale v Ipswich and Wigan v Portsmouth. At least they ought to still be in the bottom four at 5 o`clock even if they do win.

I'd certainly go and watch if it was local and draw a proper conclusion as in general, I enjoy watching motor sports (although this is always 4 wheeled), as for Horse racing... been to Cheltenham twice and have NEVER seen an actual horse there in the flesh. Spent the entire time in a bar (which says a lot more about me than it does the sport of kings).

Indeed.

Greyhound racing used to be so big, that Wembley Stadium refused to cancel a pre-planned meet back in 1966, causing the World Cup group match between Uruguay and France to be played at the White City.

Yep fair few fatalities, v8 boats going around at 80mph + and concrete walls.

Some great stuff on YouTube from the era

Lovely to hear Murray Walker commentary on that clip.

Also, brings back memories of when the harbourside wasn't filled with over-priced apartments too.

Meanwhile, over at ‘The Colony’.

They have built a permanent structure at their ‘game changer’ of a facility. A little toilet block I think?

Yeah I saw that on sagchat where they`re all creaming themselves at how big it is!

Mind you, anything bigger than a portacabin must seem big to them.

Thanks. Didn't realise the waste disposal site was open this Bank Holiday Monday.

Heading there later to dump another truckload of junk.

They got one of those at cadburyheaths ground

I bet they don’t have Championship ready sprinklers though?

Apparently the clubhouse is the size of 2 70’s semi’s.

I know a few Sags still stuck in the 70’s who get semi’s when City lose.
