They were saying on their ‘forum’ that their away support is basically the same as Liverpool’s because both of them “sell out their full allocations wherever they go...” - just try and take that in ... ???

Well, Liverpool do.

Rovers manage to fully sell out an away allocation maybe twice a season.

Regarding The Colony, a brief history.

https://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/hospitals-and-asylums/3413-hortham-idiot-colony-hospital-brief-history.html

Whilst I'm not comfortable with the use of 'idiot Colony' as a term for those with mental illness, it does seem like a far more appropriate name for the site today and going forward than the historical use of the name suggests.

Effectively, they will be developing a facility to train idiots.

Popped onto Delusion Central and found this;

Hortham was an "open" colony which specialised in training mentally defective offenders for resettlement in the community

Not a lot will change then. I am surprised they didn't find a donkey sanctuary

They certainly have "defective DEfenders" nowadays..

Blimey things I'd never imagine ending up on this thread - links to derelict places and talk of a Colony.

The terminology of 'idiot' comes from the Victorian era really.  You had your standard 'Lunatic Asylum' for those of poor mental health but then you also had Asylums for Mental Deficiency and also Idiot Asylums.  Most of the terminology faded away in the 1930's when in particular the 'Asylum' tag was dropped from institutions such as Glenside on the other side of what is now the M32 divide. Stoke Park was also termed a colony.  From 1930-1930 they'd all get referred to as mental hospitals but then the mental part was dropped too.

The  'Colony' tag line is a reference to the layout of the site more than anything else. During the early years of the 20th century there was a dramatic shift in the design of mental hospitals, earlier institutions like Bristol’s existing mental hospital (Glenside) had been designed around an imposing complex of ward buildings linked together and, to service areas, by a network of corridors into a single large hospital complex. The practical benefits of this style of hospital where one part of the hospital could quickly and easily be reached from any other part of the hospital began to give way to the perceived therapeutic benefits of a dispersed layout. Where patients were treated in a complex of smaller separate villas clustered around the hospital site which was believed to give the patients a greater sense of community and privacy.

Barrow Hospital is (well, was) another 'Colony' layout but never gets referred in the same manner. It's strange how it seemed to stick with some and not others.

Here ends today's irrelevant history just for @Eddie Hitler

Long story short.

Rovers have bought land historically used to train idiots.

Well I played against City teams at Farleigh "Hospital" which at different stages was an hospital of the two different types described above. My sister was a resident at the latter type and was very well looked after until it closed.

Think it may have been used for training purposes as well. But let's keep it quiet and not let the other lot know.

Leaving aside their purpose they were truly amazing buildings - I did a lot of work at Tone Vale and Sandhill Park near Taunton back in the seventies and eighties. They were like fully self contained communities with everything that was needed on site.

It`s interesting to see how inventively they have been converted into flats nowadays as well (I see quite a few in my job) - a bit like the old Napoleonic forts dotted around Plymouth. I was at one yesterday as it happens, Fort Picklecombe at Maker down on the Rame.

I used to play a charity game every New Year’s Day at Farleigh Hospital, always remember there used to be a bloke probably late 40’s standing on the gate with a cowboy hat and toy gun, he shot everyone that came through it. Sad really.

Wow! They are really pressing on at pace! Puts our more pedestrian progress into perspective...

(I have impressed myself with the number of "P" words I used there).

Pricks...

There’s a lot of pompous piffle poring from the pathetic rabble that provide piddling support for the Gas about the new grass at the colony. (Quite a few “P” words)

Local derbies next season for the gas.

Following this afternoon's League 2 meeting, Swindon & Plymouth are promoted.

And maybe another derby if Cheltenham or Exeter get through the play offs.

Nothing on their forum about the season ending today, but a thoughtful thread about if next season had to be played behind closed doors.

https://gaschat.co.uk/thread/16321/theoretically

Just wondering, if it were decided that next season’s games were to all be played behind closed doors ( or even if say there was a delayed start to the season followed by at least half the season behind closes doors), would we have to play the games at the Mem, or theoretically could we host competitive matches at The Colony?
If this were the case it would allow time for some renovations at The Mem or may even just be cheaper to operate than an empty stadium on match day. The only issue i see is it would be harder to keep fans out.

Surely if the 2metre rule is changed we could play games with a small crowd at a safe distance using just the seats available it would bring in some income ?
