Agree. Parachute payments are the source of evil. They celebrate failure and make clubs gamble on signing players, that even if they are relegated, they can pay in a hope of getting back up. Zero parachute payments and 80% wage drops in contracts will sharpen the minds of players , reduce gambling on overpaying in the Premiership (some will still ignore) and balance better the championship. It is a ludicrous system that awards riches for failure. That together with Prem teams stockpiling players is exaggerating a heavily biased system and making it worse.

Of course there are other systems for wages that are used in sport around the world, the USA has some of the most elaborate .

One possible solution for parachute payments- I think they are a necessary evil because clubs do have wage reductions built onto contracts and even that can be nowhere near enough with the gulf in TV money. 80% drops is pretty conservative given the gulf- you'd need more like 90-95% but certainly 90%...that would never fly I can tell you now. 40-50% is about the standard for wage drops in terms of relegation and probably the maximum that could be realistically built in.

One possible solution though or improvement to parachute payments- taking 2 parts.

  • If they must be used, have them ring-fenced. That is to say that parachute money is not to be used on squad strengthening- conditional on this.
  • The other part of that is used to pay existing wages. Then though the club will benefit I hear people say. Yeah pay existing wages...but squad restrictions. That is to say use them in order to help prevent every relegated club going into admin but have the players ineligible to play for the club- loans out, partly paid for out of club wages and partly paid by borrowing club maybe.

The ring fencing and restricted use would kill 2 birds with 1 stone though. Would stop a side like Stoke buying Federici, Baath, Etobo, Woods, Clucas, Ince, McClean, Afobe and Vokes! Plus loans for Williams and Martina.

I know they made cutbacks too, but not enough to cover that after relegation. Maybe some sort of embargo for relegated sides own good maybe an idea- and only when they reach x players sold, or x off the wage bill can it be lifted.

Like I say, to me a necessary evil- but they could be regulated and managed so much better.

How about a levy on all Premiership clubs of 1% of player salaries and transfer fees?  They can certainly afford that.

Yes.

Though best not to dwell on it.

Neymar earns nearly £700k a week; roughly what somebody on an average wage will earn over thirty years of full time work.

On that list you could argue Laporte and Emerson deserve a lot more!

To be fair Emerson retired over a decade ago and never really made it for Boro

Not saying it's a bad life! But they do work hard to be fair to them. Far more than just turning up every other weekend and driving fast anyway!

Well let's be fair, someone like Tomlin could never become an F1 driver - imagine him coming back in the season and then trying to get into the cockpit!!

Fitness levels of those drivers are phenomenal.

A small glimmer of hope?

Bolton Wanderers' administrators have identified a preferred new owner to take over the League One club.

Final offers were received from five parties before Wednesday's 16:00 BST deadline.

The successful bid met the criteria outlined by the administrators, including proof of funds for the next two years and EFL approval.

Paul Appleton of administrators David Rubin & Partners hopes a heads of terms agreement will be signed by Friday.

The preferred bidder, who has been notified of their successful offer, has also agreed to inject £1m into the club in order to rebuild the playing squad.

"I am delighted we have been able to reach a more than satisfactory outcome to this stage of the process and I am confident the preferred bidder has the ability to take Bolton Wanderers forward," said Appleton.

"Until that (heads of terms agreement) has been signed, we are still bound by the confidentiality agreement within the process.

"But I can assure all Bolton Wanderers fans that the preferred bidder has both the financial ability and the determination to turn around the fortunes of this great football club."

Wanderers went into administration at the end of a tumultuous season which saw problems on and off the field, and culminated in relegation from the Championship.

A winding-up petition against the club over an unpaid tax bill was suspendedby the High Court after the club went into administration, and an emergency food bank was set up to help out staff who had not been paid.

Bolton have also released a list of the 14 players that remain contracted to the club next season, including goalkeeper Ben Alnwick and Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis.

In addition:

Bolton Wanderers Football Club can confirm that the following players are currently contracted to the Club as professionals or third year scholars.

Ben Alnwick

Jordan Boon

Eddie Brown

Luca Connell

Ronan Darcy

Liam Edwards

Connor Hall

Jason Lowe

Josh Magennis

Remi Matthews

Luke Murphy

Erhun Oztumer

Dennis Politic

Yoan Zouma

Only 6 of those have and decent first team experience and out of those 6 4 of them have other teams interested in signing them,

parkinson has the hardest job in the efl imo

Presume they're under embargo again so a lot of free transfers and cheap loans.

I think under a terms of an embargo you are aloud to spend reasonable amount (not that Bolton have cash) on players until they have a squad of 20 pros,

Depends on the terms of the embargo and the type.

There's embargo then there is soft embargo. Maybe the case that the EFL set a wage limit- Bolton had one before which amongst other things allowed:

  • No transfer fee to be paid
  • No agents fee to be paid
  • No signing-on fee to be paid
  • No loan fee to be paid
  • Fairly sure wage limit was £10,000 per week.

Then again, they can allow loans and frees within certain parameters- can be tailored to the club and their situation a bit.

Arguably F1 drivers work far more than footballers mind. The vast majority of their job is sponsorship and PR events which is nigh on every day.

With due respect, no it’s not - I used to work for a company that sponsored two F1 teams and a Superbike team - the drivers and riders did minimal PR work - around five times a year - nowhere near ‘every day’ ...
