Best ever away trip memory

Had quite a few brilliant experiences following city away but nothing quite compared to Anfield when tinman scored the winner and we hung on to win. Atmosphere and the whole day was amazing ,can still remember it clearly now.

On the other side of the coin the play off defeats to Brighton and hull were so disappointing both in terms of the result and our performances when we didnt show up at either.

It's about time we had another chance.

Man City away in the Carabao is the best for me so far!

Burnley away midweek sometime in the early nineties.  Got there at half time due to a crash on the M6.  The chief equalised in injury time; happy days.  Bolton away the same year.  Crate of rolling rock on the way up and two from the chief sealing a superb city win.

West Brom 1-0 win the season we got promoted to the top tier. Arsenal 1-0 our first game back in the top flight. Coventry on that last game of the season when half of Bristol seemed to be there. 2-2 and survival. Man U and Mabutts hat trick. Great memories.

Man City or Bradford for me. Others that stand out in the memory being the 1-0 win away at Blackpool having been stood in the rain on the opening day of the season was fun in the end given the late winner and Coventry away in 14/15.

Bolton (A) early 90's with the famous Rick Marsh sat half way up the Floodlight. Crewe (A) early 90's with John Baileys wonder goal....cracking times. Anfield also a superb trip

I was with Rick that day - went away with him a lot for quite a few years (until it got a bit sketchy).

Great guy Ricky. Bolton away pre match was pretty mad for those remember the day - great day out! Saying that, most away days with Ricky was sketchy. Would never get away with it nowadays.

Forest away (night game in the Cup) was up there for me. Just madness as soon as we left BS3 at 10am!!  Ricky had a fight with another City fan on the hard shoulder of the M5 on the way up.

Never got home until 7am - straight to work. Great days.

Other games that comes to mind is Millwall away (80s), Corinthian Casuals away in the Cup (Millwall episode), Swindon away when the terracing got ripped up, and Reading away when there was a riot. Ricky got jailed for that one. RIP Rick. True red!!!

Memorial Ground when Steve Philips saved a pen and sent them down. Crawley, the day the gas went non league. And I can remember us singing ‘the gas are down’ constantly for almost 90 minutes at, I think, Wigan? That must have been when they went from 3rd to 4th div.

Seriously though,  the big games were the league cup semis, Liverpool, Arsenal, Coventry, and that play off semi at Palace was a great one too. But for sheer emotion Mansfield, and Chester when we went up from the 4th division.

1. Mansfield 4-5 City, 2002 - needs no explanation

2. Charlton 1-1 City, 2008 - went top of the Championship

3. Man City 2-1 City, 2018 - never gone so mental for a penalty

4. Bradford 0-6 City, 2015 - just incredible

5. Fulham 1-2 City 2016, - absolute scenes

There are so many!

Just a few off the top of my head.

Walsall away playoffs 1988 - won 2-0 after losing the first leg 3-1 at home. Went horribly wrong in the replay!

Forest away in the league cup 1989

Swansea away 1990! 5-0.

Leicester away FA Cup in 1992 thanks to Junior and Jackie.

Gas away 1996! Thumped them at Trumpton!

Had loads of great away days.

The ones that stand out off the top of my head are

Liverpool,

Mansfield,

Swindon 3-0

Northampton (Thorpe hat trick)

any win at Rovers,

Charlton 2007

MK Dons, Leyton Orient, Chesterfield, Yeovil & Bradford (all in promotion season)

also had some great trips & weekends away and some random ones that were all good, whatever the results were.

To be honest, regardless of results, away trips are usually good fun.

If I'm allowed to join in :0

Discounting any games at your place,  I have had so many great away days, I count myself very lucky, we ran a coach from the Pied for years so a lot of them may have been slightly alcohol influenced :)

Nov 74 West Brom, my first ever away game and we came back from 2 down at half time to draw 2-2, seemed a magical night at the time to a 10 year old.

Newcastle about 20 odd years ago, I remember it was the day Bobby Moore died, a midweek game they were top, we were bottom and we drew 0-0.  We stayed in the dodgiest of B&Bs and the landlord gave us a list of pubs that weren't safe to go into, but we ended up drinking with a South Shields bloke who took us in most of them. We did end up getting locked in at one of them for our own safety by the landlord after my big mouth upset a couple of locals in what I mistakenly thought was 'banter' . Ended up drinking with Dennis Smith , Paul Bracewell and Smiths assistant (Crosby?) in a nightclub called Greys and had to break into the B&B to regain entrance.

Everton about 15 years ago I'd guess, equalised in the last minute. One of my mates mates was an Evertonian and we met up with him at his local, the landlord offered us a ll a bet, if Rovers won or got a draw we could have free booze(whatever we wanted) after the game, if Everton one we had to pay double. Only two of us (including me) took the bet on, and I managed to sleep all the way home on the mini bus until it pulled up outside my house- which was handy :)

Plymouth away , again about 20 odd years ago. we got about 10 miles from Plymouth when we heard the game was off. We diverted to Torquay, where there was a game on, but the organiser lied and said that too was off, so we went into Torquay all day. left about 6 o clock, and as we came up to Collumpton a few people wanted a beer stop, and we ended up having a late one in a local. It was the days before mobile phones, and my wife wasn't impressed that I got home at 2am from a game that had been postponed around 15 hours earlier.

Notts County to draw 0-0 and get to Wembley for the first time was special, the 6-0 win at Reading after being 0-0 at half time was also one that will also always make me smile.

More recently when we won 3-2 at Southampton with an injury time Andy Williams screamer, me a amte and our 2 lads went to that, the boys were about 12 at the time, and we let them sit elsewhere on their own, it was an amazing atmosphere and it was great to see just how excited they were by the whole thing.

Derby away in the cup on a lads and dads trip on a minbus was also special, and I could write a book about the away trip to Derby when we won, but that may have to come under the 'what goes on tour' section!

Liverpool 0-1.  Leicester City 1-2 (He's from another Planet!).  Derby Co 3-4, two down after no more than 10 minutes to an expensively assembled side only to go on and win!  Crackers game.  I remember a defender coming on for them and his first touch was to head into own net!!  Some Pavement dancing after to boot!!

If it counts as an away day then it has to be the 3-0 win against Bolton at Wembley. Otherwise, I’ve got it down to 4 with the 1-0 win at Highbury in our first game in the top flight taking precedence over the 2-2 draw at  Coventry that kept us up, the 2-1 win at Bolton on the opening day of the season which included a Jimmy Mann screamer and the remarkable 5-4 win at Mansfield. Honourable mentions go the 1-0 win at Spurs in our first season back in the top flight and the mauling we gave Bradford to seal promotion back to the Championship.

On the downside, the first time I saw us concede 7 against Northampton Town tops the list. It felt so much worse than the 7 we conceded against Swansea, who were at least a decent side. Incredibly disappointing too was this year’s 0-0 at Rotherham, a poor side who couldn’t even fill the subs bench due to injuries. We were so pitiful we should have been docked points.

Mansfield 5-4 - the greatest of limbs

Port Vale 3-2 (same season I think) - Lita banged one in injury time right after they equalised

Cardiff 3-1 - top of the table and we still f*** it up!

Chesterfield 3-0  - promotion season under  GJ, finally seeing us win at Saltergate

Palace 2-1 - play off semi, again much limbs

Notts County 2-1 - Tins 500th game

Millwall most recently was pretty good tbh. "I see the East End are rising" blaring out through London Bridge station.

Fulham away (the Tomlin winner and the 4-0), both trips to Newcastle, Reading under GJ and a bit of an odd one but Leyton Orient away just after Cotterill was appointed. 300 odd of us there, they were flying no one expected anything, 10 minutes in we were 2-0 up, end up winning 3-1, bantering with the people living in the flats on the corner of the away end. Great fun.

No contest, it has to be that glorious day at Arsenal. All the hype was about Malcolm MacDonald but Gary Collier didn't give him a sniff.

Instead he was upstaged by Paul Cheesley and we comprehensively outplayed them. But for the woodwork and Jimmy Rimmer in goal it would have been a thrashing.

I might change my mind when we beat Arsenal away on the first day of the 2020/21 Premier League season.
