What possible reason would he have to keep Johnson if he wasn't doing well? The reason he hasn't been sacked, and by all accounts is getting a new contract, is because he's doing a very good job. It's totally possible that they have it all agreed, even signed up, but want to announce Lam's contract today and Johnson's tomorrow (or Friday, or next week, or whenever they like), simply so that there is a big news story on each day.
