Harry Maguire

Recommended Posts

A thread that is started most times he plays for England, but...

If the stories are true and he was that close to signing for us under Cotterill, SL must be kicking himself for messing about with the agreed fee.

World Cup semi finalist and being linked with £90m moves.

Surely the biggest player we have genuinely missed out on?

A short story of the 2015 summer transfer window:

18th July 2015 - Harry Maguire bid rejected:

3rd August 2015 - We're linked with signing Jesse Lingard for £2.5m (although I'm not sure if this was genuine!)

12th August 2015 - Bid accepted for Dwight Gayle:

I did miss out the signing of Kodjia which wasn't a bad bit of business in all fairness! There were our other incomings according to wiki:

Date from Position Nationality Name From Fee Ref.
20 July 2015 CF France Jonathan Kodjia Angers £2,000,000 [2][3]
6 August 2015 RB England Ryan Fredericks Tottenham Hotspur Undisclosed [4]
7 January 2016 CF Cameroon Paul Garita Châteauroux £50,000 [5]
28 January 2016 LB England Scott Golbourne Wovlerhampton Wanderers Undisclosed [6]
1 February 2016 GK England Richard O'Donnell Wigan Athletic Undisclosed [7]

It does make you wince a little bit!

Don`t forget a few loans which didn`t really work out -Robinson, Pearce, Cox, and the CB from Leicester who`s name escapes me for the moment.

Seeing some of the names mentioned I suppose it does prove that at least we can identify a player with potential at times. Trouble is it is balanced with the ones we pretty soon confirm are duds too.

I remember us trying to sign Owen on loan I think after we sold Goater. Few months later he's bursting onto the scene in the Liverpool team

I doubt it - when Goater left us Michael Owen had played a whole season for Liverpool’s first team scoring 23 goals in 44 games and he had also already played for the senior England team ... we were actually linked with Owen on loan when we signed David James during the Steve Coppell debacle ...

I've always thought Cotts was a good judge of a player,  his recruitment to put the L1 championship team together was faultless Wilbs Smith Little Ayling Freeman etc for very little money ,  for the Championship his identification of McGuire Grey was spot on, and the signing of Kodjia - £2-3M and sell for £12-15M was the best example of SL's philosophy of (if we buy we buy young value , develop and sell at a big profit) which we haven't yet equalled. Despite this a certain tedious poster continues to flog the line that SC didn't carry out SL's wishes when he actually has been the most successful at it. Clearly we are in a good (probably better) place under LJ now - in terms of whole club development- but had we completed on the deal on McGuire we would have made a hefty return.

I always assumed this was down to circles he worked in with people like Redknnapp. I would imagine there are always things going on behind closed doors between him and his mates.

I have mixed feeling about this - would they have been as good if they had come to us …. who knows but we do have a history of bringing in marquee signings and rather than it raising the tide within the team we bring them down to our level. luckily those days are a bit behind us now we have the training facilities in place that these type of players need to stay at there best.

It may have been before Goater then. Was definitely the season before he made his debut for Liverpool

The pre season of his Liverpool breakthrough (97/98 ?) year we played Liverpool in a pre season friendly at AG and 16/17 yr old Michael Owen scored at the East End. Is this what you are getting confused with. Owen was always highly regarded and no way would Liverpool have loaned him out.

Unfortunately for SC, Steve Lansdown didn’t agree  with you CR.

I can’t remember if it was Maguire or not, but I do remember us trying to sign a defender for about £2.5m, agreeing personal terms, and then trying to go back and knock down the fee. The selling club then quite rightly told us to do one. Could all have been rumours of course.

That was Maguire, and it was a decision taken above SC's head to start ******* about with the fee.

What people tend to forget about these deals are that the fees may have been agreed with the clubs but the player would still need to want to come to us and I couldn't see that with any of them to be honest.

The rumour is that Cotts had agreed fees and wages (for both Maguire and Gray) prior to going on holiday and Pelling then tried to a better deal.

We were close to signing Hudson-Odoi on loan last summer, could be one to miss out on.

If I remember under Millen we were linked with some names who became big players, can't remember who exactly.

If he came here he would've turned into Jonathan Leko no doubt. We're good at taking players on loan but we don't seem to have too much success with wingers.
