Bristol City are close to making their first senior summer signing of the transfer window with Rene Gilmartin lined up to join the Robins.

According to BristolLive 's sources, the Colchester United goalkeeper is a major transfer target for Lee Johnson's side as Cityreinforce their options in goal - and even add another potential coach to their staff.

Gilmartin, 32, is out of contract having played 24 times last season for John McGreal's League Two outfit, who challenged for a play-off spot but eventually finished eighth. He kept nine clean sheets in 22 league games last campaign.

The U's have offered Gilmartin a new deal, but instead we can reveal that the shot-stopper is heading to BS3.

Gilmartin has played for Walsall, Watford and Hednesford Town and is no stranger to the West Country having also spent time at Yeovil Town and Plymouth Argyle.

The 6ft 5ins keeper had three years with the Hornets in the Premier League without making an appearance from 2014-17, before he went on to join Colchester United in a player-coach capacity - something that will appeal to Johnson and his coaching staff.

Seems from this article that he maybe wearing two caps (1) a number two to NM and (2) a number two to PM our new goalkeeping coach

https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ex-watford-keeper-gilmartin-balancing-dual-role-as-u-s-keeper-and-goalkeeping-coach-1-5736910

So please make that three caps....as the EP article also says he’s a commentator!

My guess is that he will end up 3rd choice with Max going out on loan.

So if Max goes out on loan, will that make him 2nd choice?

3rd I reckon. I think they'll be another goalie coming in. Max wasn't sent out because LJ wanted 3 goalies in case if injury, which turned out to be a great decision!

What a joke....why would this bloke be our No2 ahead of Max whom I believe proved his worth last term.

Interestingly, he's Irish and Max has been called up to the RoI squad ahead of him.

Comments on twitter don't seem too positive about him:

I thought I'd be the first one to say that he is awful!

Think the previous player/coach role must be part of the reason to sign him up. Be a bit of an odd one if it was based on his playing career alone. Seems to have barely played and when he has it's been lower league stuff.

, whats the point of this?

Bit strange.

We let Frank go who is a year younger and established Championship keeper for a 32 year old lower league keeper ?

If it is as a coaching and playing role then fair enough but surely Frank could have done that ?

We needed someone relatively reliable who would be willing to be back up?

Cmon, he's not coming here as 2nd choice goalkeeper. He'll be 3rd choice, but is ultimately here to coach.

As none of have insight into his coaching abilities, I don't think we can really pass comment on that

Maybe finances are tight and this is the best option for this season as we feel we need to improve elsewhere? Just playing devils advocate but we don’t have unlimited funds for buying and paying players so if having a cheap backup means signing a better player up front then maybe it is best

So,,it's a shit lower league keeper who's joining a top half championship club in a  coaching/back up keeper role???

I still don't like it,,I still don't get it.

If he isn't that good then we wouldn't bring him in to be worse back up than what we had in Frankie, or above Max. That would be ridiculous. 3rd choice keeper at this level is hardly going to be brilliant. We need one though just in case both goalies get injured. I'm sure Max will be going out on loan. Really think he needs 40 games elsewhere to come back ready.

This. Get Max out to L1 on loan for the season and he takes over next season. Cheap back up for NM

Makes perfect sense

But we’ve just employed a goalkeeping coach. How many coaches do we need for two or three keepers, yes I know there are youngsters as well but we would seem to be heavily weighted to the old/experienced or young, nothing in between.

Don't necessarily disagree with you, just wanted to point out that its very unlikely he'll be 2nd choice IMO.

The bonus is he can drive Sammie Szmodics up with him when he comes to sign

not surprised in the least we are after another goalkeeper that leaves us all non-plussed - apart from Mäenpää the recent record of recruits has been questionable in the very least (O'Donnell, Giefer, Steele, Marinovic and now this bloke).  Invest in a decent 'keeper and it will be worth a dozen points a season.

😂....even as number three surley no sense in this bloke' blocking the road for our young & very promising keepers..

It truly is silly season.

Bit harsh to include Steele with the rest of them
