Genuinely, where?

We like Max, but it’s a huge shout for a top 6 league one side to have him as first choice currently. Mid to lower table L1 is where we realistically expect him to go and there is a clear vacancy there to let him play

Teams looking for a keeper would have noticed his performances against Villa etc. What needs developing is his command of the area, his shot stopping talent and distribution is already there.

A curveball might be that LJ decides that this can be developed whilst remaining with the squad learning off Niki and Bentley whilst playing for the U23s.

Firstly, just because the Colchester guy we’re rumoured to be signing is a keeper, doesn’t mean that he can only coach keepers. Secondly I just wondered whether LJ thinks highly enough of Max’ potential that he’s prepared to send one our coaches to work with him a couple of days each week whilst he’s out on loan?

How would the loan teams’s goalkeeping coach feel about this other coach coming in every week specifically to coach Max? Does that sort of thing happen anywhere?

I’ve not a scooby but firstly, I’m not sure whether all lower league teams have specialist goalkeeping coaches; secondly, I’m sure that different agreements can be made for different circumstances.

Great at southend going by reports, 15 clean sheets in his first season at Brentford and plenty of their fans sad to see him go (looking at their comments on forum and twitter) despite a poor season. I'd suggest that that dip in form is what has made him a possible signing - Brentford fans though of him as a future England player after his first season.

Putting aside the excitement of a signing for a moment, I’m really not sure about the GK kits this season

I think they are a thing of beauty.

A modern take on the older GK tops.

I can't remember where I read it, or maybe listened to on a podcast but I remember hearing/reading something about how a bizarre goal keeper kit is more likely to have a psychological effect on the other team than just a plain GK top.

LJ is all about the small % gains so I think it's been done for this reason.

Because he's not better than the other two? Surely a year playingbis better than bench warming or am I missing something?

How do we know how good he is now?

Players do get the yips, and it can ruin them.

And we don't know how mentally strong he is to come back from such a lack of confidence. Where is the proof that he is over it now, where is the form to back it up?

Joe Hart never really recovered from it.

Who knows what he'll be like, I think it's a bit of a kick to Max who played well in the side, he should have been given the opportunity as number 2, but we shall see, all about opinions.

But Max isn't going to learn sitting on his backside. I think he could have a big future but he needs regular football.

I don't know much about Bentley and his career or if he is even better than Max, I'm using the fact that we've put down a fair wedge and signed him to a x4 year deal that JL will probably see him as his number 1.

Supposedly fluorescent GK kits make the goalie appear bigger and in a blur, the colours are definitely a psychological thing for some clubs/managers.

Reading the comments on the Brentford forum it seems like he had 1 great season for them followed by a poor one last season. Some of their fans are saying his poor season could be down to the coaching but they all seem to wish him well and think that there is a good keeper in there somewhere if we can find the key to unlock him.

Figures of £4m are being discussed.

Welcome to Ashton Gate DB !!!

Well if Bentley is straight away our number 1 then he has to play very well every game to keep Maenpaa out, assuming Maenpaa is the same player as he was last season.

I don't think the price tag will necessarily make him number 1 straight away. I don't even see why the price tag should matter. Best goalie plays in goal, simple.

What pleases me about this signing is forward planning. I doubt any of us would have been upset with Nikki #1 and Max #2 next season. They both have proven worthy starters at this level.

But this shows we are after true competition; we are looking at letting Max go out on loan, and we are no doubt saying to Nikki ‘this is your last season here, make it a good un to get a deal elsewhere’.

My impression is, if we are being this cut throat about our GK, where we were pretty well covered before, striker is a position which is going to be addressed.
