How would the loan teams’s goalkeeping coach feel about this other coach coming in every week specifically to coach Max? Does that sort of thing happen anywhere?

I’ve not a scooby but firstly, I’m not sure whether all lower league teams have specialist goalkeeping coaches; secondly, I’m sure that different agreements can be made for different circumstances.

I’m guessing Gilmartin will coach our under 18s, 17s & 16s.

Great at southend going by reports, 15 clean sheets in his first season at Brentford and plenty of their fans sad to see him go (looking at their comments on forum and twitter) despite a poor season. I'd suggest that that dip in form is what has made him a possible signing - Brentford fans though of him as a future England player after his first season.

I think they are a thing of beauty.

A modern take on the older GK tops.

I can't remember where I read it, or maybe listened to on a podcast but I remember hearing/reading something about how a bizarre goal keeper kit is more likely to have a psychological effect on the other team than just a plain GK top.

LJ is all about the small % gains so I think it's been done for this reason.

How do we know how good he is now?

Players do get the yips, and it can ruin them.

And we don't know how mentally strong he is to come back from such a lack of confidence. Where is the proof that he is over it now, where is the form to back it up?

Joe Hart never really recovered from it.

Who knows what he'll be like, I think it's a bit of a kick to Max who played well in the side, he should have been given the opportunity as number 2, but we shall see, all about opinions.

I don't know much about Bentley and his career or if he is even better than Max, I'm using the fact that we've put down a fair wedge and signed him to a x4 year deal that JL will probably see him as his number 1.

Supposedly fluorescent GK kits make the goalie appear bigger and in a blur, the colours are definitely a psychological thing for some clubs/managers.

Reading the comments on the Brentford forum it seems like he had 1 great season for them followed by a poor one last season. Some of their fans are saying his poor season could be down to the coaching but they all seem to wish him well and think that there is a good keeper in there somewhere if we can find the key to unlock him.

Figures of £4m are being discussed.

Well if Bentley is straight away our number 1 then he has to play very well every game to keep Maenpaa out, assuming Maenpaa is the same player as he was last season.

I don't think the price tag will necessarily make him number 1 straight away. I don't even see why the price tag should matter. Best goalie plays in goal, simple.

What pleases me about this signing is forward planning. I doubt any of us would have been upset with Nikki #1 and Max #2 next season. They both have proven worthy starters at this level.

But this shows we are after true competition; we are looking at letting Max go out on loan, and we are no doubt saying to Nikki ‘this is your last season here, make it a good un to get a deal elsewhere’.

My impression is, if we are being this cut throat about our GK, where we were pretty well covered before, striker is a position which is going to be addressed.

Max wants first team football, whether with us or elsewhere. He doesn't want to be sat on the bench for most of the season as number 2.

15 times last season ?

If it wasn’t The season before he was outstanding for Brentford and there was talk of a move to Premier League and even England future

And before that he was outstanding at Southend

Amazing how many times you’ve claimed to have watched a player whether In Oldham or London yet still make City games

He is a very good keeper and has displayed so

The one issue with keepers is they can tend to star and perform brilliantly when new / as a youngster butlose their way

Bentley has the potential to be a Premier League Keeper

Reading Brentford fans views he made great saves last season but also had  mares / errors

I can’t ever remember a keeper in the history of the game who has not made mistakes or had a dodgy spell

The best ones are the ones who don’t make many , Seaman springs to mind

When I think of Bentley , I think Joe Hart in lots of ways and for a Club of our standing he’s a brave an ambitious signing

Good post Bob, glad to see you back.

When Bentley was at Southend and when he went to Brentford, he was class. I was hoping we would go for him. Yes, he lost his way a bit last season but with his personal stuff, can anyone blame him? I certainly wouldn't. A new city, baby on the way and a totally different environment, different players, style and coaches may be just what he needs to get back to the previous levels.

We've got an undoubtedly good keeper, let's back him to get back to what he was just 18 months ago, the change is hopefully just what is needed to do that.

Welcome Dan Bentley.

Because he’s a footballer. All footballers, unless motivated by money, want to play.

Keepers need games, especially young ones.

Him going out on loan to league one next year will do so much more for his growth and experience than being a number 2 here.

During last season he looked an accident waiting to happen. That said he did have a tough year personally.

Not overly excited, however reproduces his form previous to that and we will have a cracking player.

Max played very well in the side in Nikki's absence, so why drop him from the squad?

No he didn’t. He made some great saves and did his best, but he’s not a championship level keeper, yet.

A loan is exactly what he needs.

The Brentford forum is split on him, bit like ours with FD really. I know a fanatical & sensible  Brentford fan who I would meet up with for a beer on our away days at Brentford.  He is quite pleased to see him go and reckons he cost Brentford countless points last season with errors. Yet on his day can be outstanding.

A new start and fresh challenge and new keeping coach (where it seems there was at issue before?) and we might have a good one. I cannot believe we have paid 4 Million mind 🤔🤔

You’ve hit the nail on the head - Max made some really outstanding saves, but his all-round game just isn’t top-six Championship level yet. And I emphasise yet, because I’m a massive fan. But, ultimately, if Niki goes down seriously injured in game five or six Max suddenly becomes our number one for at least half of the season and that’s a huge risk.

Personally, I think it’s fantastic we’ve finally signed a young, quality, proven goalkeeper for the Championship. With the exception of Frank, who we signed in League One, I’m struggling to remember the last goalkeeper we invested in with a view to them being our long-term number one. Anyone?!

I reckon we learned that lesson the hard way in the final few months of last season.

I see the Mail is reporting £2m. Given he only had a year left on his contract that is plausible.

I can't say I'm keen on the new purple goalkeeper kit.

I would suggest a wool polo neck jumper in green. Yellow if an international game.

The rumoured £4m does seem a lot when we are taking a gamble last season's poor form was just a blip due to personal/coaching problems... if the Mail are right and the fee was £2m that would seem more sensible.

I don’t know current situations but I know that finances aren’t any better in the lower leagues than they were 20 years ago. My only insight is working with the partner of Frank Talia. When he was at Swindon he and Jimmy Glass had to pay for a goalkeeping coach out of their own pockets for one day a week. The junior keepers were on such low wages, they were basically subbing their share as well.

If there are still clubs in that position it could be a good bargaining chip for getting Max a good loan with guaranteed games. We supply a day or two’s coaching for all their keepers in return.

Danny Cowley made a point of saying that for us loaning players was not about the money. Building mutually beneficial relationships of the kind you describe with a number of clubs can only be a good thing.

If you're interested in a Brentford fan's view (mine) then I'll sum it up for you (most of you have said it all already).

He's a great shot stopper and always has been.

Distribution is generally very good.

He made lots of unforced errors this year and lost his place.

Comments about lack of protection are fair, to an extent, and was probably part of it, but definitely not all.

The rainbow baby thing had also been mentioned a while back as a possible reason for head not being right (but nobody seems completely sure).

I think the people on here likening him to Joe Hart probably aren't too far wrong.

His weakest area is decision making - coming to claim for things / commanding his area / judgement on when to come out / ball at his feet.

With good coaching or support he might be able to improve these things and become a great keeper - but he might not.

I don't think anyone's super upset to lose him at Brentford but also wouldn't have been too upset if he'd stayed either because he does have the potential to be really good.

Nobody knows for sure which way he'll go (but I guess that's the case with any Keeper) and for 3 or 4 million it's probably not the worst gamble in the world.

Shaping up to be another interesting year in the Championship and lots of us are probably going to end up with very different teams to last year come September!

It does look as if there is some succession planning going on with Maenpaa in probably his last year with us. He's one of the best keepers I've seen for City and it'll be a shame to see him go - if he does.

Having keepers with the quality of Maenpaa and Bentley is a huge step forward imo.

I've purposely not had a look at that compilation of errors Bentley made last season as it is designed to negatively skew opinion. In that respect, to me, it is a shitty thing to do. Hopefully, he's got the yips out of his system.

It is could be correct, or wildly wrong.

We can effect individuals by use of colours and design. Stripes can make players look bigger, one block of colour can be more imposing, and certain colours are associated with positive behaviours.

It is also very possible to negatively effect the individual wearing the kit itself. If the keeper dislikes the kit, loathes the colour thinks he looks like a cock? Basic psychology tells anybody that is less likely to help that player attain the positive mindset associated with peak performance. It is not a marginal gain.

Championship quality stop gap but never intended to be our number 1, as confirmed by the signing of Bentley with a 4 year contract. For the past few years (aside from Frankie) we've had stop gaps, loans and short term goalies. I didn't mean any disrespect to Maenpaa, just that it's nice to finally have a top permanent keeper with a view to keep for the future.

Yeah, not criticising signing another, just seemed like the poster was saying we hadn't had a quality one before. Imo Maenpaa was absolute quality.

From a Brentford mate:

”He had 2 good seasons, but last season he cost us about 9 points from errors and got dropped. It coincided with us getting a new keeper coach - he lost confidence. He will need a good start, otherwise he could lose it again. Good fast distribution and a good shot stopper, but does not command his area at corners.”

Oh, I thought commanding area was something he did well.

Well that goes to show don't trust youtube when judging a player!
