Bedred31
Can’t believe that’s the real Gert? Fabulous player-could even spit elegantly. Steve Mc, meanwhile, was decent, but I seem to recall that he spent a lot of time on his backside complaining at the ref.
simon uk
Pretty sure mclaren and shelton were involved in some kind of swap with oxford. As others have said, shelton was fantastic, mclaren to me was kinda like a poor mans michael carrick type of player.
OneCity
McClaren was decent, but as others have noted not in the same class as Shelton. But I do recall him scoring an absolute peach of a half volley against Huddersfield in a 6-1 home win.
Gimme Shelton
McLaren, I always likened him to a poor man's Trevor Brooking. Went to Eastville just to watch him play for West Ham once,I wasn't disappointed. In Div 2 he was on another planet.
RedEd73
I'm sure McLaren's debut was my first match....1-2 home against Mandfield in 1988!

Almost redeemed by the 80s mullet, but he was utter shite. Also, is it Mark Cooper in the front row on the left next to Galliers? Some great players and characters as well - to name a few, Buster, John Bailey, Carl Shutt (always looked strange without the moustache), Glenn “Psycho” Humphries, Rob Newman, Walshy....the names trip off the tongue. Mark Gavin started fairly slowly for us from what I can remember, but the following season was unplayable as he danced around defenders at will with the ball glued to his feet. One of my favourite ever city teams that McClaren loved a long raking cross field ball from memory (and was pretty good at them too)

shelts
Loved John Bailey always played with a smile on his face and used the ball really well and got into decent positions even though his legs had gone .

I presume you're saying his 'contribution' was to make way for better midfielders the following season? Because McLaren was dispatched before season 89/90. Played 44 league games in 88/89 mind. But he fell over quite a bit, especially when the wind got up a bit (down the Park End mostly).
