I think part of the problem is that it has been a victim of it's own success and a fair number of 'youth' turn up with a carrier bag full of cans, without spending money in the pub.

To be fair many of us spent pretty much the whole of the 1980s doing exactly that. Good times.

Whereas these days - middle aged shout out - we're asking 'do you offer any crudités and a selection of craft beers?'

Modern football eh? ? Sad.

15,000 season tickets sold but less than 100 people supporting Section 82 on OTIB. Need to catch other groups of fans.

Section 82 are a very small clique who don’t like anyone encroaching on their patch. If they weren’t so inward focused they would already have more support. They are so tight with Bristol Sport they’re more like the Disney Club than football ultras.

That's not a bad first post...

The details for the 23rd edition of Flag Day have been confirmed, with host Sean Donnelly outlining why the date has been moved from the first day of Bristol City's season to August 17.

Flag Day, which dates back to 1996, is a celebration of Bristol City fan culture with supporters meeting outside Donnelly's Three Lions pub in Bedminster, displaying banners, singing songs and decorating the streets with colour.

It was expected to coincide with City's Championship opener against Leeds United on Sunday, August 4 which has been moved to a 4.30pm kick-off to accommodate Sky Sports desire to broadcast the game.

Given the potential volatile nature of the fixture, and after extensive discussions with Avon & Somerset Police, Donnelly and the Section 82 fans group who are the driving force behind the banners have decided to move Flag Day to August 17.

That will be City's second home league game of the season against Queens Park Rangers at the more traditional kick-off time of 3pm on a Saturday meaning the festivities can get underway, as normal, at 10am

The police never told us to move the game but we understand the nature of the fixture and what could happen," Donnelly told Bristol Live.

"All it takes is one idiot to infiltrate the crowd, from either side, and start causing trouble.

"It's not that the police told us to move it, they said they were happy for it to go ahead on August 4, it's our decision based on what could happen if it goes ahead."
Sky Sports had even wanted to film Flag Day to coincide with their coverage of what should be a blockbuster match between City and Leeds.

However, the potential for trouble and all the implications of negative images being televised to a nationwide audience have led Donnelly and Section 82 to make the decision.

"On the one hand, having the Sky cameras could have been great; as an advertisement for the club, the city, the supporters and even the pub," Donnelly added.
"But that works the other way and the last thing we want is for Flag Day to be given a bad name.
It's still going to be a celebration and it's still going to be one big party."

The event has taken placed every year since 1996 and was traditionally held at the end of every season, with the exception of City's relegation to League One in 2013.

It was moved to the start of each season in 2016 following the death of loyal Robin James Grieve, who was a major influence in making Flag Day the spectacle it is today.

To be fair section 82 have little input in recent times for flag day its mostly been myself and the group that was WTMS 'when the moon shines' (enie robin logo) but don't let the EP get in the way of a little fake news.. No dig at section 82 just giving out facts..

Section 82 was not even formed when flag days were first up and running..

That would have been myself and Sean D talking about this not section 82.. Again no dig at them but fairs fair on facts..

Would you care to expand / explain

As somebody who is not part of but who donates to Sec 82 , and had thoughts of further financial support , I’m generally interested

In my experience they do a great job of getting the atmosphere going, but they don’t feel very approachable or open to ‘outsiders’. A couple of seasons ago some of the younger fans who mainly sit up high in s27 started singing ‘LJ he’s taking us to Europe’ which was actually getting abuse and booing from S82. Apparently as some of their old boys didn’t like it. Someone once brought in another drum and S82 called security to get him chucked out. They used to ask for volunteers to help setting up the displays, but this has stopped due to what seems to be fear of anyone encroaching on their patch. I also know personally of someone who contacted the club about flags/drums etc, and was told, by the club, that all fan issues/ideas need to go through S82. Now this is fantastic that the club is actively engaging with the fans, but not if it’s only with a small group behind closed doors.

Pieman, if I remember correctly Section 82 tweeted / posted on OTIB last season to encourage fans to come up and chat to them and also actively sought out support for new members.

Not sure why they are getting such a bad rep on here?

It’s simple really, people love to moan about anyone trying to do anything, it’s been the same since the east end was open. City fans just love to moan.

Its easy to say slate people but No one gives advice on how they think it should be done better.

Flag day has been going since 96?? It hasn't early 2000's and the idea really started with Forza EE 2007 onwards then wtms. Section 82 used to be nothing to do with it because they made it clear they didnt want to be.

I am absolutely none the wiser reading this.

@Bristol Rob What is known Flag day really started in 2007 with the opening of the EE and the Forza Eastend website which later became WTMS (When the Moon Shines). Before that it was an end of season picture with the old Pride of Bristol flag. Without Forza EE and CH etc there would be no flag day. Section 82 have been asked to help out several times but in the past were not keen on it.

Cheers for clarifying, was a bit confused.

So are WTMS still an active group, and what happened to the yellow submariners?

Finished now. When the EE went WTMS did a few more things like the Lions mural but that was more or less the end. A few ideas to make the Dolman corner more interesting were run past the club but not allowed as it was outside the official S82 singing section.

That was just a group of us that used to travel to away games together, and it grew from there.

We still meet up for drinks etc, but haven't organised an away trip since Shrewsbury away a few years back

Then those 'kids' should go and organise their own Flag Day at a different venue.....and not tag along to the Three Lions event.

I would have thought young lads at what is a annual lads (?) event would be encouraged. Fair play to them. Too many turn their backs on their local clubs.
