Bolton / Bury On The Brink (Merged)

Slightly off piste but still relevant to this topic, but not sure if already covered in previous 10+ pages.

Just looking at free agents on Transfermarkt, players out of contract, looking for a club -

Forwards: JET, Gary Hooper, Chris O'Grady, Chris Dagnell, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake

Wingers: Will Buckley, Dean Bowditch, Matt Jarvis, Jermaine Pennant

Midfield: Peter Whittingham, Paul Anderson, Josh McEachran, Jack Rodwell

Centre Half: Michael Turner, Anton Ferdinard, Matthew Kilgallon, Roger Johnson

Full Back: Danny Simpson, Jordan Spence, Ryan Taylor, Adam Matthews, Alan Hutton

Goalkeeper: Jordan Archer, Boaz Myhill

With rose tinted glasses on and wishing that there was more compassion and understanding in the game, that some of these players would play for free for one more year and a combination with the young players at each club, give their knowledge to help with fielding a team and filling the stadium, reduced ticket prices etc, generating some income and PR.

Happy to be shot down for the idea.

Would you work for free for a year?

It’s a wider societal problem in this country. Huge amounts of money sloshing around a few large clubs, some of which is of at least dubious origins, or the club has been mortgaged to the hilt to make the owners a profit (the Glazers), while the values of community and camaraderie that are the lifeblood of most of the clubs in the EFL count for nothing, especially when you see some of the people allowed to own them, a significant proportion of whom have had previous rulings against them in terms of business activities outside football.

IF (and it’s an enormous if) the EFL had any gumption, it would run a much tighter rein over clubs, including real “fit and proper” assessments of owners, plus direct supporter involvement at a high level. Any decent investigation into what has happened at Bolton & Bury would likely make similar recommendations, but I won’t hold my breath on it happening. Instead it will be the usual guff and hand-wringing about particular unfortunate circumstances etc, rather than dealing with the real substance of the problem. If it means some EFL clubs going semi-professional to survive, so be it. A Bury-Bolton derby amongst semi-pros in the third tier of English football is infinitely preferable to a competition containing “Man Utd B” v “Man City B”, however much that might suit Guardiola.

Whatever happened to Bristol South End and Bedminster FC?

Your going off subject talking about kit changes and name changes.

That’s a pretty desperate response - you think that Bury and Bolton merging is a good idea - I don’t.

You thought that Oldham, Rochdale and Bury merging was a good idea - I didn’t.

I'm not going off topic talking about kit changes and name changes - Hull’s owner wanting Hull City Tigers as a new name and Cardiff’s owner changing the home kit to red are examples of clubs’ histories and traditions being chucked away recklessly - mergers are the same ...

And on the subject of changes, if clubs merge, their kit changes and their name changes - pretty obvious really.

You still haven’t answered the questions I’ve asked you a couple of times - if City merged with another club and played under a different name, in a different location and in a different kit - would you go and watch them?

And if Bury and Bolton merged under the name Bury Wanderers and played in Bolton - how many fans of each club do you think would watch ‘that’?

Another well thought out piece, this time from Four Four Two. Warning: not for those with short attention spans!

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/what-english-football-can-learn-disasters-bolton-and-bury-so-they-cant-happen-again

A point I had missed was that Debbie Jevans is a temporary appointment. Can't say I am convinced that the EFL will not appoint another Shaun Harvey in due course. The loose regulation suits too many owners I fear and there will be resistance to any attempts by Jevans to introduce proper governance.

The major issue is that footballers in the lower leagues are paid a good salary but not “live for free for a year money” and people cut their cloths according to their means.

Many of those players will have mortgages etc and may genuinely be unable to make the sums work...

To be fair, any event like this will have a few hangers on turn up just to be involved. Can’t see it is any way reflective of Bolton fans as a whole.

Exactly - the same happened outside George Michaels house when he died. Sad people who didn't know him or were even fans .....they just want to be part of "something" & and it being on telly exacerbates it.
