I think we still need 4

After yesterdays poor showing (yes they were premiership and we wont come up against quality like that every week) but it did highlight the fact that our midfield and attack are non existent. I feel we need a defensive midfielder like Evertons Joe Williams to stop the opposition running straight through the middle at our defence. A creative midfielder Kasey Palmer type who can add some creativity to our play. Two goal scorers one 'big un' Joao, Hugill or Keifer Moore type and a fox in the box poacher type.

Yes we would need to move a few out so how about Taylor, Watkins, Pack, Pato, Odowda to free up some space.

To be honest it looks like you have just read the transfer forum and listed the 5 players that we have been linked with for weeks now. Your post, while not incorrect, would have been more constructive had you come up  with some names of your own.

I'm affraid the names of my own Bannon, Gayle, Allen, Dack, McBurnie are not on the clubs radar due to cost so that's why i stuck with the names mentioned.

I would even try and get Kodjia back he out of favour at Villa he knows Diedhou well and he knows where the goal is.

We'll need to ship out a few first tbh,  Maybe unless we're clever with frees and loans- a lot of the good frees will be gone now but we're allowed up to 6 loans I believe so 1 permanent and 3 loans maybe.

I see you've already covered the outgoings- problem is FFP is making this division a bit of a deflated market this summer arguably,.

Birmingham 9 points off may have given a bit of pause for thought so it'll be quite hard- clubs are structuring deals differently i.e. loan with option/obligation to buy or loans or filling up on frees- we may have to consider similar for some of those players listed on the outgoing side.

Agree about defensive midfielder (trying to replace Korey) and a proven Championship striker/PL young striker (a reliable alternative to Diédhiou, with chances to surpass him in the hierarchy), whereas I think we alreay have two creative players (Pato & Szmodics) + another one who can be quite unpredictable (O'Dowda), and Weimann as third choice striker can give a contribution.

A return of Kodjia would be interesting, but I don't think will happen.

Agree about Ol’ Kodjia , DNA  not quite City .

Surely there are other decent strikers available overseas if we cannot get in top Championship quality ?

Unless I am wrong - one senior specialist right back, one left back, one defensive midfielder, the squad is not well balanced. Injuries to certain players, Hunt JDS and either one of Pack or Brownhill and we are in trouble. Not panicking, but not feeling like we have covered all bases this summer

Sometimes.

I'd argue that sometimes was 100% more times than for many of our players. Plus, we wouldn't get enough for him to compensate what he brings to the team.

The ball was in the final third ample times yesterday to demonstrate that we need a decent marksman up front. That won't come cheap, but it is essential if we are to maintain our momentum.

Pato was our best player yesterday. He's genuinely creative.

Yes he has talent but he can't tackle or head the ball and always bottles out of a 50/50.  He's a clever dribbler but runs round in circles and down dead ends and he creates very little  he occasionally cuts in from the left and has a crack at goal but hardly ever scores . He doesn't look interested half the time, if he was our best player yesterday then god help us time to get rid I'm affraid we need better

As a '10' behind Reid he was terrific. So productive- cutting in from the left, or wherever doesn't really do it for me.

The signings so far have basically brought us, squad wise, back to where we were at the end of last season.

The fact they’re permanents is better for business, but doesn’t make them better players.

Pre-season signs don’t show any of the ‘next generation’ of youngsters are ready to really impact the first team early next season, at the moment.

So i’d agree with the OP - I think we need at least a CM and 2 forwards in. A 4th in the form of a RB would be ideal.

I wonder if we’re struggling to off load players or if we’re waiting on movement in, surprised we haven’t seen more out yet, but surely we need to offload 2 or 3 and perhaps a few loans.

Big week coming up and I’m sure they all the know the realities, especially after that Palace performance.

I think the players tried their hardest yesterday. But LJ did not set us up like he would have done had it been a competitive game. I don't think we will play that attacking against Leeds.

But also that was prem opposition. And when we played against Derby in that game that got stopped at half time, we dominated and were 1 up. That's one positive about preseason. And another is our players did look very fit yesterday. Next week is a completely different occasion to a preseason friendly against Palace.

I want a minimum of 2 extra players. Possibly 3.

To be fair, if he'd come up with names of his own, he'd have had 'Weston' & 'Red'.. .. Not sure that's going to help at all!

I’d agree with this.

The reality is the players would have/will still be off match sharpness and competitiveness. Palace were a big step up in class to who we’ve been playing so far.

We did set up with a bit of a ‘have a go’ attitude which were unlikely to do again anytime soon.

It seemed to me, one of the big downsides of having 1 up top, mean’t we had 3 players in Eliasson, Szmodics and Weimann all looking to get into the box to support Fam or getting out high and wide up the pitch, with the 2 wing backs bombing on into the midfield spaces left by them - creating a whole load of space that was easily exploited by the skill of a counter attacking Palace side.

Plus some individual errors down to concentration.

Hopefully lessons will be learned, but no panic buttons yet for me.

It's still a pretty decent squad, and with budgetary restrictions, bringing in high wage players may not be feasible right now. As for the ones 'to shift', there needs to be a buying club and player consent to move them on. The review of Championship spending this summer should have acted as a reality check that we are working within limitations, and over-spending guarantees absolutely nothing.

Next week is when it matters, yesterday counted for zilch.

There were some very good bits of play at times too which is promising. Like you say, against top opposition like Leeds in a competitive game I can't see us having that much of a go. It was like LJ didn't mind risking losing the game if it meant we got our patterns of play etc in the game. If we'd treated it like it's 3 points and we tried to keep it tight then that might not have been what the players needed.
