That’s the stand-out season opener in my memory too. What a great team. Nicky Morgan’s header (about 1:17 into the footage) was an absolute gem.

City 5-0 Notts County, Div 2 in 2003, just had a great day, Notts were hitting the woodwork and we just kept hitting the net. We could do no wrong that day. Great start to the new season ☺️

I recall feeling very optimistic about the season ahead after that game and it helped soften the blow after Scotty Murray had left that summer. From what I remember it should have been 6-0 - Micky Bell had a perfectly good goal disallowed.

The first game of the 1999-2000 season at Reading when Lavin was sent off for angrily kicking the ball at a home fan was also a memorable one. Feisty on and off the pitch.

I know I live in the past.

1958 Div 2

First game at home to Rotherham won 6-1.

Three days later away at Barnsley a stunning 7-4 win.

Following Saturday at Bramall Lane, I got a comp ticket from Hodgkinson Sheffield U and England goalkeeper. Lost 4-0 and on train home got a bottle of beer from Bert Tindall and spent whole journey with the players.

Happy and innocent 15 year old then. Bit wiser now but still nuts about City.

Oxford at home first game of the 98/99 season - scorcher!

Lavin booting the ball in the crowd and getting sent off at Reading

Three Lees, 5-0 v Notts County

Last minute Scotty goal on our return to the Champ against QPR

The match v Sheff U that began the most memorable season

Were you in the Swindon end with me, @PolskRed and a few others at that one mate?

We got escorted out of it by the police just before the game kicked off and ran down the pitch to the City end, much to the delight of our fans!

Brighton, got there a couple of minutes late, we were playing woefully and said to chap next to me ‘if we keep playing like this we’ll lose’, ‘you’re not wrong’ he said ‘we’re already 1 nil down’

cant remember the result of the game or how we did that season but wasn’t the best start

It's that time of year again, Christmas Eve for football fans, which leads me to ask;

What are your memories of the first game of the season?

For me it has to be the 21st August 1976, I'd been watching City struggling in mid table of the second division since I was a kid in the late sixties, when all of a sudden we were on the way to Highbury to take on Arsenal. No one gave us a chance, they had just signed SuperMac, we were a bunch of bumpkins coming up to the smoke for a hiding.

Up jumps big Cheese and the rest is history

COYR

Plus we outplayed them

"Memorable" can mean either a few things tbh.

Been a fan since 1998 so in that timespan, personally speaking.

Good/decent

Someone already mentioned it but the late Showumni goal in 2006. That was actually our first opening day win in 3 years and combined with the strong finish to 2005/06 under GJ it was looking good- pretty disastrous next few weeks though, the losses on the pitch.

Off it, the Court case and the players fighting at Northampton- Carey and one other. Yet that week was the making of us that season in hindsight. A good first day!

A year later, QPR. Promoted after such a long time in the third tier via Pulis, near misses and the Tinnion interlude, but still a relatively established opponent. Big crowd, sunny day?

We played fine, Murray scored late to surely win it, 2-1- yet we were pegged back even later! Sure we subbed our keeper injured too. Still it showed we could do it though, could have a go but not to the level we saw over the following thrilling 9 months!

The bad...I would go Millwall 2010 but didn't have a season ticket that year so I couldn't get a ticket. Hence one I saw, a year on Ipswich a home.

We lost 3-0 at home for the second successive opening day- any optimism was well and truly deflated tbh.

One I was disappointed to miss. 5-0 Notts County 2003. Went away on holiday that day and got to location that evening to learn we'd won 5-0! Happy of course but being there would've been nice.

One I was gutted to miss but ultimately rather relieved. The 3-0 reverse at home to Millwall! I was full of optimism, fairly established- Coppell to build on the excellent work of GJ.

Also of course, next level (on paper signings) including such players as Hunt, Stewart, Cisse and of course the star, England WC goalkeeper David James albeit 39,40. Yep exciting times and gutted to miss...or so I assumed!

Southend in the early 90s. How many City got in for free that day? It was their first ever game in the second tier and they underestimated how many we'd bring.

Wolves away a few years later, sat directly underneath home fans...

Grimsby away, Torpey injured in his first appearance.

Blackpool in the 2000s, last minute Brooker winner in the rain after being outplayed.

Preston away.. 2-1 up going into the last minute of injury time. Ball deflects off the referee and ends up as a Preston corner, which they score from.

Wigan a few years ago.. first game in the new Ashton Gate. Beautiful day and a last minute winner!
