Gameweek 28 Update - Second Leg Syndrome

After five scores in the 30s in the first leg, and close matches galore, this second leg v Barnsley had a lot to live up to. For a good while, it was failing. The satisfying riffs and hooks were there, in the form of an (arguably fortunate) clean sheet, but it was just lacking that first leg magic, with potential crowd-pleasers missing the target time and time again.

But then came that penultimate track, and suddenly it all made sense again. The band were back, and they’d turned our expectations on their head. Our lowest scorers became our highest, wasted chips turned to inspired selections - could first leg deficits follow the same path?

Short answer: no.

Reverse semi-finals (second leg - aggregate in brackets):

@jrt55555 14 (45) - (50) 17 @Dogbert: neither gained any attacking returns, with the difference only in the captaincy - Dogbert trusting our defenders; Paterson unable to repeat his heroics for JRT.

@citywest30 18 (49) - (37) 13 @Chessels Chick: with them both captaining their forwards, it was all down to the engine room and the rearguard action, and citywest topped both - Williams a bonus point better off than Hunt, and matchwinner Eliasson reminding Paterson how it’s done.

Semi-finals (second leg):

@Oubliette23 23 (56) - (52) 22 @RedYoshi: a captained Best Of chip looked for a while like it might bring the first turnaround, but Oubliette’s organic selection of Eliasson coupled with a 12 point Dasilva ensured that captain Diédhiou wasn’t costly.

@Chivs 28 (41) - (36) 26 @bissellredhead: with Chivs matching Oubliette’s team but captaining better (Eliasson), it was a tough task for bissell, but by Jove it was close. An inspired choice to award the armband to Dasilva immediately gained 24 points, Diédhiou bumped that up to 26... but neither Nagy nor Massengo appeared, and the comeback was cut agonisingly short. Eliasson would’ve done it.

Thus we are left with these tantalising final match-ups:

7th/8th place playoff: @jrt55555 v @Chessels Chick

5th/6th place playoff: @Dogbert v @citywest30

3rd place playoff: @RedYoshi v @bissellredhead

GRAND FINAL: @Oubliette23 v @Chivs

Ridiculous that they’ve scheduled a final for a Tuesday night, mind. Bloody modern football.

@bissellredhead‘s near comeback has seen them regain 5th spot, while the irrepressible @Oubliette23 is just a point away from half a millennium. Can 7th placed @Chivs cause an upset in the final?

GW28 Points Breakdown

  1. Dasilva 12
  2. Baker 8
  3. Eliasson 7
  4. Williams 7
  5. Hunt 6
  6. Brownhill 3
  7. Paterson 3
  8. Smith 3
  9. Diédhiou 2
  10. Weimann 2
  11. O’Dowda 1

Best of luck @RedYoshi it's a game we both dont really want to play as we'd rather be in the glamorous final but to finish third would mean a bit of respectability for one of us.

My team:

Dasilva vc (williams)

Massengo (smith)

Fammy (c) (weimann)

Ok, but actually, as I’m here...

@Oubliette23 - cannot select Dasilva

@Chessels Chick - cannot select Paterson

@citywest30 - cannot select Weimann

@bissellredhead - cannot select Dasilva or Diédhiou

@Chivs - cannot select Eliasson or Diédhiou

@RedYoshi - cannot select Eliasson or Weimann

Everyone - CAN select Wells (finally, an extra forward option) :banana:

Gameweek 29 Update - Finally, the Final

Remember that Tuesday night in Reading when we defended like warriors during a heart-attack inducing final 10mins, but it was fine because it warmed everyone up on a freezing cold night and we were ultimately triumphant?

Yeah, let’s keep thinking about that. Forget last night. Pfft, doesn’t matter. Let’s go back to that magical cup final.

7th/8th place playoff:

@jrt55555 v @Chessels Chick: level-pegging in midfield and upfront (Eliasson/Weimann v Paterson/Weimann), the battle for the wooden spoon came down to those aforementioned warriors at the back. Both had cleverly captained their defender too... but Chessels’ use of the Best Of chip saw Baker pip Dasilva, and earn a 28-24 triumph. Unlucky JR“5Fives”T, but seeing as you’re the one to claim the wooden spoon, who’s the real winner?

5th/6th place playoff:

@Dogbert v @citywest30: with Pato on both teams, this scrap to get that extra 20p in prize money got off to a great start. No captains in defence this time, but Dasilva topped Williams and edged citywest into a single point lead. All down to the captains - Dogbert was in with a shout... but that shout fell on deaf ears. With Diédhiou booked, the lead extended to three, and citywest took a 19-16 victory.

3rd place playoff:

@RedYoshi v @bissellredhead: double Dasilvas dismissed the whiff of “after the Lord Mayor’s show”, and they were locked on 9-9 when the forwards were taken into account. Unfortunately for bissell, those two striker points came courtesy of captain Fam, and Smith couldn’t prevent a 16-point skipper Eliasson taking yours truly to the bronze medal, 25-11. Well played, bissell.

Grand Final:

@Oubliette23 v @Chivs: what we’ve all been waiting for. First against seventh. The dominant force versus the underdog. Chip v Chip. Defence saw Chivs take a two point lead, Baker up against Dasilva. The Best Of chip in midfield added an 8 point Eliasson*, but Oubliette wasn’t letting up and matched that with Paterson, before clawing back a point with Weimann v Diédhiou. 17-18 b.c. (before captains). With Chivs only gaining one extra point, giving the armband to Fam over the chipped Eliasson, it all came down to skipper strategy. And Oubliette knocked it out the park. Triple Captain. On final day. Clever. Big match player. 34-19. The fairytale may have stopped short of happily ever after, but Chivs had wowed the fans, and Oubliette’s table topping resources were just too much.

Commiserations to @Chivs, but huge congratulations to our inaugural cup winner, @Oubliette23, who also - fittingly - claimed the January Manager of the Month in the process, ahead of @citywest30 & @Dogbert in joint third, and myself in second.

What a start to 2020.

Here’s how we stood at the end of January:

No-one wants to hold onto that 5th place, but it seems fitting that @Dogbert reclaims it having missed out on 5th place in the cup.

There will be an Easter cup coming too, so stay tuned.

*Eliasson was considered “best of” midfield due to a higher rating on WhoScored, FYI.

Gameweek 30 Update - Well, Well, Wells

Bye bye Brownhill, our 3rd highest fantasy scorer (112pts). It’s been great.

Hello Wells, our 3rd proper striking option, and supposed saviour. Will it be great?

62.5% of us thought it would be.

Against QPR, it wasn’t. Well, not for Wells.

@citywest3011pts (Dasilva - Eliasson - Wells)

@Chivs: 13pts (Dasilva - Smith - Wells)

@jrt55555: 13pts (Dasilva - Eliasson - Wells)

@Oubliette23: 14pts (Williams - Eliasson - Wells)

@Dogbert15pts (Williams - Eliasson - Weimann)

@bissellredhead16pts (Hunt - Eliasson - Wells)

@Chessels Chick21pts (Dasilva - Eliasson - Diédhiou)

@RedYoshi: 23pts (Baker - Paterson - Diédhiou)

A potential cup final hangover for Chivs & Oubliette, as Diédhiou rewarded Chessels’ and my trust amidst a 6-point midfield captain trend that only citywest - regretfully - bucked.

For the first time, the lead at the top has extended beyond 40 points.. Is there any catching @Oubliette23?

Gameweek 31 Update - Oh B(r)um

We can’t win forever, I suppose.

But sweet Sally’s salamander is Paterson a fantasy points godsend.

5 games back, 35 points earned, leave him out at your peril.

Here’s how it all shook up:

@Dogbert5pts (Hunt - Eliasson - Wells)

@bissellredhead7pts (Dasilva - Eliasson - Diédhiou)

@citywest30: 7pts (Williams - Eliasson - Wells)

@Chessels Chick: 8pts (Dasilva - Eliasson - Diédhiou)

@Chivs: 8pts (Williams - Eliasson - Wells)

@RedYoshi: 12pts (Hunt - Paterson - Wells)

@Oubliette23: 23pts Best Of (Dasilva - Paterson - Diédhiou)

Yet again, Oubliette showing us how it’s done, though with now only one chip remaining. If you’re gonna play them early, mind, that’s how to do it.

Meanwhile, only Chivs & citywest earned any defensive points, Hunt and Dasilva victims of the pre-60min sub.

Now nearing a 60 point gap at the top - will these last few months turn into a procession? Getting tighter for 2nd place at least...

GW31 Points Breakdown

  1. Paterson 10
  2. Diédhiou 3
  3. Williams 3
  4. Eliasson 2
  5. Massengo 2
  6. Smith 2
  7. Baker 1
  8. Benković 1
  9. Nagy 1
  10. Wells 1
  11. Dasilva 0
  12. Hunt 0
  13. Weimann 0
