Conflict of styles

Not trying to have a go at them because in defense I thought Baker and Wright were pretty solid today but just don't see how they fit the style of football that recent signings suggest LJ is looking for.

With the central midfield region strengthened massively and the signing of Afobe there is a clear attempt to avoid the lump it to Diedhiou we have been resorting to.

We were much better today in terms of quick passing and working openings than vs Leeds thanks mainly to the excellent Palmer and Nagy.

Unfortunately imo, too much of our possession was passing across the back 3 and Baker and Wright just didn't look comfortable under pressure and resorted to going long.

Too late now but have a feeling the failure to sign a ball playing CB will seriously hamper our attempts to move the ball into the likes of Palmer.

Last season Kalas was the no nonsense CB in the duo but now hes the most comfortable of the ball which is a concern.

Do we want to talk about the 8 million pound elephant tin the room, that looks just at bad if not worse than the 2 you mention.

I agree with what you say, but to leave Kalas out of the mix who has been massively influential in not picking up points this far is a little unfair on Baker and Wright.

I know its unlikely he will be dropped due how much he cost, but so far he has from what I have seen, been been just as big a culprit as the other two and his defending has not been great either.

I know he went through a similar period last season, but improved massively, but at this moment in times he is just as guilty as the other two

Massive shame we are light in this area. I think Wright is less likely to make bad mistakes than Baker, but neither good enough on the ball in the way we want to play. And Kalas is not really a ball playing type apart from the odd run up the pitch, he isn't really the Webster type. Moore is hopefully good enough, but we should really have one more of that type too.

Free transfer needed. Said on other threads Eros Pisano still unattached. Liked what I saw of him at centre back. Any other options then fine, but we need one in imo.

Kalas has certainly looked a lot less assured without Webster.

Hopefully a blip as you say and not a sign of just how good Webster was

We either need to get a ball playing center back in, or we need Nagy to drop back and take the short ball from the the defense and get it moving quickly.

Unfortunately I think we had a bit of a unique talent with Webster who could burst out of defense, take the pressure off and and allow a regroup as we went on the attack.

We are really going to miss Webster, and I think we probably are going to have to change our playing style somewhat, but the lump it forward choice the centre backs are currently instigating needs to be stopped quick smartish

Totally agree with all that’s been said on this topic. For me this is our biggest risk to promotion, a inconsistent defence that can’t play the ball out of the back.

Would love to see the completed passes for Wright/Baker yesterday...pretty much underpinned everything discussed in this thread!

Surprised more people haven’t highlighted this!

Taylor Moore is a ball playing centre back

He’s very comfortable in possession as was Webster and with more game time  TM will gain the experience and confidence of when to bring ball out into midfield. Timing is crucial and with match experience will become instinctive.

I don't think we'll be playing three at the back for long.  I think it's just a combination of Dasilva being injured and needing to let players like Moore and Massengo settle into the first team gradually.  I expect the thinking yesterday was an additional centre half provided some cover for Rowe who isn't a specialist left back.

You can turn all signatures off in your profile and you''ll thankfully never see them.

I use various source, but if you’ve got an iPhone / iPad, try Statszone app....£3.99 for a whole season of Champ stats.  Whoscored.com I use for heatmaps (free).  I use Wyscout for more detailed stats, but that’s a monthly subscription.

Think I might look into getting WyScout- how much is it monthly?

WhoScored is often my go to but get the feeling that for passes, completion of passes it has its limitations!

Interesting to note Kalas quite high in the % successful. Always thought he had a bit more to offer on the ball.

Not the same as Webster though, a lot 'safer' with his passing and somewhat deeper with positioning.

You can sign up for a 14 day trial.  I managed to get on €10+VAT per month package which I don’t think they formally offer anymore....so it’s more like €20+VAT per month, for basic package.  @jbbfc on Twitter has the €80 version, because that gives unlimited video.  My version is pretty much just data (and 20 mins video per month).  I wouldn’t sign up willy-nilly....do the trial, and they’ll call you up to see how you’re getting on.  Try to see if they have any cheaper packages.

I use Wyscout for data extraction in bulk and import into excel > Tableau.

Statszone app is great though....£3.99 per season for all Champ.

DM me if you need more info.

It may not be recent City at their best in seasons have been going to feet? That is obviously an opinion but to feed that football a team needs to be filled with technical players who can play one, two, three touch supported by centre backs who move the ball freely, switching it, willing to play out supported by a technical footballing keeper.

City have had footballing centre backs in Kelly and Magnússon and sold them. Webster likewise.

If true commitment was made to possession based football, seasons ago the squad would possess more footballing centre backs v those displaying more traditional traits. The tactical flexibility of the team should not be compromised by one centre back leaving.

Who hoofed it up the pitch everytime a Leeds player got near him?

No he didn’t he played out of defensive several times.  He also cleared the ball when required.  Made one or two mistakes against the best team in the championship.  We need to give him game time to forge a partnership with Kalas and gain experience.  With the midfield we have now also will give him more protection.
