It might work out brilliantly for them, but going into a World Cup with so many players with a handful or less caps is slightly weird. Hooker: Rory Best, Sean Cronin, Niall Scannell Prop: Cian Healy, Dave Kilcoyne, Tadhg Furlong, Andrew Porter, John Ryan Second row: James Ryan, Iain Henderson, Devin Toner, Jean Kleyn (Tadhg Beirne) Back row: Peter O'Mahony, Josh Van der Flier, CJ Stander, Jordi Murphy, Tadhg Beirne (Rhys Ruddock/Jack Conan) Scrum half: Conor Murray, Kieran Marmion (Luke McGrath) Fly half: Jonny Sexton, Joey Carbery, Jack Carty Centre: Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose, Robbie Henshaw, Chris Farrell Back three: Keith Earls, Jacob Stockdale, Jordan Larmour, Rob Kearney, Andrew Conway The front row picks itself really. Leaving McGrath out wouldn't necessarily be a huge call after his disappointing time since the Lions. Porter and John Ryan can both cover both sides of the scrum at a pinch as well. I've slightly hedged the really big call is picking two out of Kleyn, Beirne, Ruddock and Conan. Although he's seen a lot of game time as our back up 8, I think Conan will miss out due to a combination of Murphy's ability to play 8, Beirne's versatility and Kleyn being the most like-for-like replacement we have for James Ryan, already one of our most important players. I think Murphy will be safe due to his versatility and Dan Leavy's injury leaving us light of options at openside. Ruddock could go for the same reason but I think that Kleyn's extra bulk and Beirne's ability to play in the row or at blindside, as well as his unbelievable power over the ball, will sway Schmidt. In other words, I have no idea. I really wanted to take Conan, even with SOB and Leavy out the back row is really difficult to cut from. If it ends up being an 18/13 split I'd take him and it'd be between Beirne and Ruddock for the last place. Murray has had an indifferent season by his standards and the likes of Marmion and Luke McGrath have both deputised well during his injuries but I think Marmion will go as Schmidt has given him more game time over the last few years and he seems to be the next guy in line. Taking two scrum halves would be a risk but I don't believe that they'd go without a backup to Sexton and Carbery, the latter has just been ruled out for 4-6 weeks but if passed fit will definitely travel. The lack of game time given to Ross Byrne suggests that Carty is next in line there. I think that the centres and back three pick themselves. Will Addison would be unlucky but Farrell has done really well in all of his caps. I think we need to take five back three players because apart from Henshaw none of the centres have much experience of playing wing or full back. Obviously I've gone for an 17/14 split. If it's an 18/13 split then I think Andrew Conway will be left out and one of Beirne, Ruddock and Conan will benefit. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Absolutely. You could make a decent case for both England and Wales. Australia's unbelievable victory against NZ last week has put the cat amongst the pigeons. Toner being omitted is the big story, Conan and Ruddock are in and Jordi Murphy misses out. That's a surprise as it maybe leaves us light at openside, but it was maybe on the cards after POM wore 7 at the weekend. Beirne and Ruddock give you great versatility across the back row, as well as at lock so it makes sense. I still would have taken Jordi over Conan for versatility but it would have been really harsh on Conan. Slightly surprised that Murphy gets the call over Marmion but there's not much in it.
