My starting 11

Might get some flack for this but I think we have good players but will struggle to get the right balance currently our best 11 players gives us no width at all as we’d end up playing 3/5/2 (no quality wing backs until JD back) or 4/3/3, 4/2/3/1 not later especially doesn’t give us enough going forward at home. I’d go with a little bit of an odd formation that for me gets our possible best 11 on the pitch.

I,d go as follows and play unchanged for 4/5 games 3/4/1/2

                             Maenpaa

              Moore/Pireria  Kalas      Baker

    Brownhill      Massengo    Naggy      COD

                                Palmer

                      Afobe        Semenyo

subs

Famara

wieman

Rowe

Hunt

Elliason

Bentley

Moore/Pireria

Not a fan of 5/3 at the back formations - but that’s looks ok. Moore being in there means at least 1 of the CBs is comfortable on the ball.

Think at home we’re more likely to see either O’Dowda or Eliasson start though which would mean this formation would be less likely.

He can’t not after last night. Disaster waiting to happen. Wish we’d kept Vyner and loaned / sold Wright

Not saying I agree , but suspect he will.

If we play with a back four then Baker and Kalas if we play with a back three then add in Moore

First choice 11 for me currently:

                               Bentley

Pereira          Baker         Kalas         Dasilva

                  Nagy                Brownhill

Eliasson               Palmer                Weimann

                               Afobe

We may see Massengo push Brownhill hard for that starting spot though.

For me:

1) We don't (yet) have a centre-back pairing that convinces.

2) Not yet seen enough of Pereira to comment but Hunt, Rowe and arguably JD are more suited to wing-back roles than out and out full backs.

3) Nagy can hold the middile

4) We could do with a front 2 - I don't think either Diedhiou are lone strikers)

5) Palmer could be a great option with freedom to play.

6) Szmodics needs time and confidence but become a great player for us given both.

That in mind, I'd want to see something similar to England at the last world cup - back three, holding midfielder and two attacking midfielders.

Maybe:

---------------------------------------------------------------Bentley

----------------------------Moore-----------------------Kalas-------------------Baker

Pereira-------------------------------------------------Nagy---------------------------------Rowe (JD once fit)

-----------------------------------Palmer---------------------------Szmodics

-----------------------------------Weimann----------------------Diedhiou/Afobe

Subs:

Wright

Hunt (Rowe once JD fit)

Brownhill

HNM

Eliasson

Diedhiou/Afobe

Semenyo

Bentley
Hunt, Kalas, Moore, Rowe
Nagy, Brownhill
Weimann, Palmer, Eliasson
Afobe

I think that will/should be the team for Saturday although I think LJ might start Baker instead of Eliasson.  Or who knows he'll get the bingo boards back out and it could be completely different.

I'd always go Maenpaa and Dasilva when fit. But for Saturday i would go

                   Bentley

Perreira. Kalas. Moore.  Rowe

            Massengo Nagy

   Brownhill. Palmer.  Eliasson

                     Afobe

No Weimann. I think Brownhill is better and has shown what he can do on the right in the past. That's assuming Massengo is as good as the Tuesday game suggests.

Exactly how I would like us to line up with the hope Massengo can come on and see the games out from the bench

                           Maenpaa

Pereira        Kalas      Baldwin        Rowe

      Brownhill        Nagy        Elliason or O'dowda

                               Palmer

                Semenyo

                                 Afobe

Massengo will be pushing Brownhill for a start soon but he's only 19 and it's best to ease him in slowly.  Baldwin is 22 and I've been impressed with him the two times I've seen him play at lower levels of course.  He is fairly pacy, can bring the ball out of defence, fairly physical and played a couple f games at left back for Cheltenham on loan before injury so he could play left of Kalas.  If Maenpaa is ready I'd play him. Bentley hasn't been at obvious fault for the goals that have been shipped but Maenpaa seems to give confidence to the defence.

How has Bentley been at fault for any of the goals we've conceded??

I have asked myself that same question a few times and like you, came to the conclusion that he could do nothing about each goal. But then I question myself again and ask would other keepers not have come out for a certain cross or perhaps positioned themselves better to be in with a chance of getting nearer the shot/header. The odds are that of the 15 goals he has conceded (including the Forest Green and Palace games) he clearly must have been at fault for a good few of them even if visually that does not appear to be the case. I'm still to be convinced by him.

I think Bentley is a good keeper, I just have a preference for Maenpaa who seems unflappable, appears to have a calming influence on the defence and makes hard saves look relatively straightforward by good positioning / anticipation.  It was understandable given Maenpaa was long-term injured to go into the transfer market for a new keeper but I would have kept O'leary as number two.  With O'leary and Wollacott, City have two very talented keepers going forward.  The latter along with McCoulsky saw Forest Green into the next round of the Cup.
