Who's Jackson?

Marlon Jackson, academy striker who played a couple of times that season, not sure where he ended up?

Blimey that squad was littered with bang average players:- nyatanga, clarkson, gerken!

That looks a really awful side. Now look at the side from last night. This club has come so far!

I certainly agree with the sentiment about how far the club has come, but don't think that squad was too bad on paper.  Of the 3 mentioned, Nyatanga was decent for his 1st couple of seasons and got many Welsh senior caps, Clarkson was a Scottish international (yeah, OK!) when he came to the club although he was, as you say, bang average (if that) for us, and Gerken was keeping David James (who played for England in the World Cup only a few months earlier) on the bench.  Also, having Albert,  John Stead and Pitman up front wasn't too shabby! and Cole Skuse has only just left Championship football.  I think Kalifa Cisse was also at the club at that time

Perhaps the David James situation (which has obviously been done to death on OTIB) was symptomatic of the problems we had then, ie paying a fortune for players who were past their best and had no sell on value, and was the catalyst for re-thinking the whole way the club operated,  which we are now benefitting from by investing in quality young players.

If they were average players we wouldn't have struggled so much.
