Completely agree, I don't like songs with naughty words in it, because they should be for everyone to join in with, especially kids.

It's just swearing for swearing sake.

As a kid I used to love joining in with those songs when I could get away with it. Sometimes I'd get a clip (soft tap) around the ear and sometimes it'd be allowed to go due to whatevers happened on the pitch.

As I heard yesterday, a bloke telling his young son “you can getting involved in all the songs, just don’t repeat some words to your mum tonight”. Just as I was told when I was nipper and just what I tell my young son.

Football is sanitised so much these day, let’s not encourage clubs to make it more so.

You must be able to see the difference between "going down the Rovers, to do the B*stads over" to "you ****" at the end of a song?

Especially when the "you ****s" is something no one else does.

It's literally added to seem like they're rebels.

I’m pretty sure you are referring to ‘Drink Up Thy Cider’....

Any life long City fan from Adge Cutler’s home town of Nailsea would know that......wouldn’t they?

I reckon we should change its' wording somehow to commemorate when we last played the useless pikeys in the league. The only problem is anyone who has actually experienced a Bristol league derby might be getting on a bit now so it would have to be sung a bit slower to allow us old buggers time to stand up! ;)

For a City fan it amazes me he could make so many mistakes about everything related to Bristol City FC.

Very flattered RR...but I doubt it. Far more reasoned posters than me...Dave F for one. I may know my football...but I'm way too opiniated on social issues, so will have people who disagree.

I however do agree with you...I hate the ' stand up' chant...the Gas don't even come into my physchie these days...it's old hate, and imo the chant only blows smoke up their arse, as it still recognises them. The biggest insult would be if it wasn't sang anymore.

I don't see anyone else spelling famous City players names incorrectly.......or using the wrong words on the classic Adge Cutler and the Wurzels song, Drink Up Thy Cider.

Part of the reason for it vs Middlesbrough suddenly making an appearance on multiple occasions was due to the persistent standing debate, act of defiance etc- I am sure RR knows this.

Beyond that anti songs of that lot are sang yes but this one, not so much.

At the end of the day, it’s only a word. No one gets hurt by hearing it.

Besides, anyway, kids hear all these words on the school playground these days anyway.

Mad. Racism just words? Bullying just words?

Does them hearing it on the playgrounds make it OK for 6 year old screaming the 'c' word?

Are you really comparing the c-word to racism and bullying?

Jesus Christ.

Naughty words was a joke comment. Swearing for swearing sake shows a lack of vocabulary and/or common decency for people who don't appreciate bad/offensive language.

Normally you swear for emphasis/emotion/sometimes comedy. Shouting "you ****" at the end of a chant is just pointless.

No, re-read my comment. You said it's only a word and no-one is hurt by it. I'm providing examples of where words can be hurtful to people.

If someone at school was constantly called a "****" by other students would that not constitute bullying to you? Or is that all OK because its just a word.

But we were only talking about the c-word, which it totally different to someone using racist language.

Again, when you make the point about someone constantly calling someone else a **** in school, the word is being used in a totally different context to how it was being used on Saturday.

I don't want to argue you with you mate, it's Sunday evening.

Just my view on the use of swear words being used unnecessarily when it doesn't add anything.

That’s been a (sort of) Sheff Weds chant for decades - obviously Blades instead of Gas though ... here they are doing it at Ashton Gate about ten years ago ...
