Looking on bcfc.co.uk, it has the list of managers

April 1932-March 1949: Bob Hewison *

* Bob Hewison was suspended between October 1938 and May 1939. City captain Clarrie Bourton became player/manager for the intervening period.

Does anyone happen to know why Bob was suspended from October 1938 to May 1939?

Bourton and team mate Keating were later transferred and in return City received a load of corrugated iron that became the cover at the East End! For a while it was known as the "Bourton-Keating Stand".

You got the transfer fact right and that City were able to build the Covered End with the transfer fee of £4,000. And that it was called, unofficially, the Bourton/Keating stand.

But that transfer took place in 1928, and thus had no relevance to the suspension of Hewison in 1938/9 except that Bourton had returned to City and took over from Hewison as manager.

Illegal payments.

Yes - as per the following text that was originally on Leedscityfc.org (but is now a dead link - although it's should be viewable via this link: https://web.archive.org/web/20091013174715/http://www.leedscityfc.org/content/view/100/ )

"Hewison later became Bristol City manager, and became embroiled in another illegal payments scandal. On 15 October 1938, another joint Football Association and Football League inquiry into payments made to amateur players fined Bristol City 100 guineas and suspended Hewison until the end of the season."

That’s a fair old stint in fairness. Looks like we were slipping the amateurs the old half crown. Can you imagine...’yes, you can have Kelly and Webster, but we want at least enough correlated iron in return for a stand’.

Cannot conceive of it nowadays. Well, at least in this part of Bristol.

The Gas can only dream of corrugated iron compared to their canvas coverings
