daored
Interested in thoughts on James Maddison, some negative press regarding him. In summary he leaves the England camp due to illness before they travelled for their game on Friday. He’s seen in a casino playing poker on Friday night when England were playing. No reports of him drinking or playing up. What’s your views? For me he’s entitled to do what he wants in his spare time, surely the England medical staff would have agreed for him not to travel. Unan
He can do what he wants if it's legal & isn't breaking any club rules, don't follow the media narrative.
Akira
True but common sense would say its best not being seen out in a casino if its all in the press that you've pulled out because of 'illness', especially when he's been teetering on breaking into the England squad. I don't get why you'd pull out, then go to a casino? Surely every English player has the dream of playing for their country?
weepywall
Cant see an issue, apparently he was Ill for 2 days before flight so not fit to travel, what he done on Friday night was up to him and I don't blame him for going to a casino instead of watching that piss poor England performance . Club and Country
Been ill all week, probs gutted about missing out, started feeling a bit better, went casino on his own to play a few cards no dramas for me
Northern Red
Not the most sensible move if he's trying to encourage Southgate to pick him, I'd suggest. I also reckon people wouldn't be quite as forgiving if it was a player who's been getting criticised often, e.g Dele Alli or Jesse Lingard. 054123
Really confused at to what he’s done wrong? Not fit enough to play a competitive international fixture, so sent home and killed some at the black jack table.
formerly known as ivan
More nonsense from the British media. This wouldn’t even make the news in any other country but such is the way with the England football team that they will try to do anything they can for a story to sell papers
Alex_BCFC
Not the best idea but can’t understand why GA isn’t giving him game time so can understand him being annoyed with current players getting in ahead of him.

Apparently Southgate has huge doubts about his character, he so say left him out of the two previous games to see how he would respond. This guy seems to have all the ability to go far in the game but like many before him will ruin his career by his off the field activities. AppyDAZE
Always comes over as a pretty smart young guy when I've seen him talk, and I like him. I think the media scrutiny level nowadays has gone overboard and we all need to realise that footballers are people first and footballers second regardless of how much they are paid, etc etc
And Its Smith
He’s done nothing wrong playing a bit of poke. unless he didn’t raise the big blind with pocket rockets on the button that is.

Southgate said he wasn't in because he didn't fit the system of 433. Now Leicester play that system Maddison made the squad but obviously out ill. I personally am not sure he will be that great at international level. He didn't impress me much in England under 21 tournament. You'd think he'd stand out at that level. Good player but just not sure he will be as good as people think for England.

Mr Popodopolous
Was he the worse for wear as well as up late? Can't say I agree with that tbh- fairly sure I read somewhere that Messi e.g. doesn't drink during the season, or maybe it was Ronaldo. If you want to reach your highest ceiling as a player you need an elite mindset IMO.

handsofclay
The illness he might've been suffering from could've been Fortunatus Bonum which is commonly known as a bout of good luck. If I ever suffered from this ailment rather than waiting at home for it to subside I would be heading for the betting shop or casino. So a wise man in my book. Super
Whilst he probably has done nothing wrong, it's not the brightest thing to do. Clearly not going to impress Southgate.

reddogkev
Have no idea if this thread is true, but if so, my thoughts are why couldn't he have waited until Saturday night? Shows a lack of common sense and possibly a gambling addiction, which could be a concern. Call me crazy, but if I was home ill, I'd stay in doors and rest. The media and scrutiny in this country is hardly a new thing, is it? I'd be pretty pissed off if I was the England manager.
The Journalist
It's a little bit like going out on a jolly in the evening having been off work sick all day. You're not really doing anything wrong as it's in your own time, but it's not the brightest move is it? File under "doesn't really matter, not really done anything wrong but... silly".
