ASHTON NAMED CHAMPIONSHIP CEO OF THE YEAR
Mark Ashton has been named Championship Chief Executive Officer of the year by the Football Business Awards.

And Ashton has also been shortlisted for the overall award for the top four English leagues and Scottish Premier League, which celebrate club leadership throughout the 2018/19 season.

The other finalists for this year’s awards, sponsored by Reznor, are Peter Moore (Liverpool FC), Gary Sweet (Luton Town), Carolyn Radford (Mansfield Town) and Alan Burrows (Motherwell).

Each winner will receive their award at a ceremony on November 28th in London before the overall winner is announced on the night.

Recognising the valuable contribution of the game’s executives in the UK has seen fcbusiness present the CEO of the Year Award each year since 2012, with winners including Ian Ayre (Liverpool), David Baldwin (Burnley FC), Daniel Levy (Tottenham Hotspur), Ivan Gazidis (Arsenal), Karren Brady (West Ham United), Mark Catlin, (Portsmouth) and Tony Scholes (Stoke City).

Speaking of the nominations, fcbusiness Editor and Football Business Awards judge, Aaron Gourley, said: “This year’s CEO of the Year sponsored by Reznor represents the very best in football business. The five divisional winners are without doubt the best in their leagues and have shown outstanding leadership over the course of the 2018/19 season.

“The pressure on football clubs each year to improve both on and off the pitch calls for leadership of the highest level and these five nominees represent that. The CEO of the Year award is one of the most prized in football and through their hard work and dedication each of the nominees has led their respective clubs to achieve outstanding performances both on and off the pitch.”

Simon Burton, founder of the Football Business Awards, added: “Football clubs aren’t just businesses - they are global brands and community assets. It takes a special type of leadership to steer them and we are delighted to celebrate these wonderful CEO’s at the Football Business Awards.”

Let me be clear, the Championship CEO pond is more like an ocean, and takes some fishing!

Watford and Oxford.

He was an advisor for us or something for the summer before we won League 1.

During O’Driscoll’s reign....not involved in Cotts’s recruitment.

I think he’s good at his job, and think the role boundaries are well-defined currently, and he’s a key part of our progress on and off the pitch.

Cott's summer according to SL

Prior to joining the U's, Ashton worked for City in a consultancy role when he was heavily involved in establishing the talent identification and recruitment system which was the foundation of the club's player recruitment in the first half of 2014.

He also led the project that enabled the club to secure Category 2 status for the academy while moving it to its present home at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, in Filton.

"We made sure we didn't lose contact with Mark after he had done such an excellent job for us in establishing the systems which were used to such good effect in the 2014 summer transfer window," said Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown.

Or rather, establishing what Cotts used that summer.

It’s interesting how his image / reputation on the forum has changed over the years. He used to just get flack for the corporate speak he loved, but gradually it’s been realised that beyond the jargon he’s actually doing a good job. He’s not to everyone’s liking, but he fits the modern world of football

The trouble is you have to speak like that to deal with others who do the same. Love him or hate him, you can`t deny his value to City in financial terms.

Football became a multi million pound business a long time ago and if you don`t have people like MA who can walk the walk as well as talk the talk you`re on a hiding to nothing. We`d struggle to replace him if he went and I`m sure SL knows that.

Remember when he was widely ridiculed on here because he was a ‘suit’ and used business language. How times change.

He’s done an incredible job and is easily our best signing in recent years!

I never had a problem with that. I expected him to talk Corporate lingo, as that was his role.  There were stories that he overstepped his boundary in terms of recruitment, and its fair to say that LJ himself said he was taking back more control in summer 18/19...and you'd have to say since last summer they've worked the recruitment side very well!

Got to be honest, he is well in to the Corporate speak, but I also feel he could sell me a five pound note for a tenner and I would be left feeling somehow I had got the better of the deal.

You could sell him a snake for £300,000, but feel like he was paying you £10m!
