Charlton on Weds

Der no.2

Recommended Posts

Arrrrggghhhh, tough team to pick.

Here goes!

Bentley

Pereira | Moore | Williams | Rowe

O’Dowda | Brownhill | Massengo | Eliasson

Palmer

Weimann

Subs: Mäenpää | Wright | Baker | Szmodics | Diedhiou | Semenyo | Rodri

4411 / 4231 - I really like the 5212, but I really want to see O’Dowda, Palmer and Eliasson together at home....with a clever striker....and us pass it quickly, not directly.

14 of Charlton's points were won whilst Lyle Taylor was on form. Since his injury, their momentum has slowed. They're FAR from being a one-man team and they've had good results against Leeds and Derby without him... But it's definitely going to make things easier for City tomorrow that he's still out (I think!).

As a Wimbledon supporter, I've watched him a lot and he's way more than just a goalscorer... I hope City are looking at him as a potential replacement for Afobe on January.

I'd rest up HNM for this one, he's been playing non stop since he came and was also with France on the international break, needs a week off

HNM may need a rest, but we haven't got another specialist holding midfielder with Nagy and Smith injured, to replace him.

I think having Odowda and Eliasson in the team on Wednesday could be a good idea... especially if they can protect Pedro and Rowe from fast counter attacks down the wings... I'd stick either of them on Leko.

I'd prefer to drop Palmer for this one and have Weimann and try Rodri up top. Can always bring Palmer on later.

And replace him with who?

How about Tommy Rowe in his preferred midfield alongside Brownhill?

A back four with Baker as a left back, O'Dowda ahead of him.

Pereira at right back with Elliason ahead of him.

Rodri up front to feed on the creativity from the wings.

Got to be honest, Baker is less of a left back than Wright is a right back!

No, just no ??

Okay, not a problem. I know who we haven't tried at left back... Let's try Famar... Oh, forget it...

Who partners Brownhill centrally then, with our lack of options due to injuries, sale and loans?

Plus of course the injury to Dasilva which limits us there too and how we can use Rowe!

As for Charlton, they seem to have a mix of approaches- still largely counterattacking or reactive but a lot of flexibity in how they set this up within the framework.

Away to Blackburn, 3-5-1-1. Home v Stoke, 4-4-1-1. 4-1-2-1-2 diamond Away to Barnsley. Likewise Home v Nottingham Forest, at home v Brentford and away to Reading, at home to Birmingham and away to Wigan.

Seem to have shifted a bit post Wigan away, 4-2-3-1 at home v Leeds and Swansea, then back to 3-5-1-1 away to Fulham- then 5-4-1 vs Derby.

So a lot of variation, albeit within one framework! Common thread is that the centre seems to be pretty packed, combine that with counterattacking, let alone that they're the away side- going to be tough Wednesday!

They're not particularly bothered about possession it seems, but for that reason I'd heavily caution against a straight 4-4-2. We saw Luton's 2nd goal how we were broke on, watched it back several times yesterday and how it was a knife through butter through the midfield and defence- all pushed high, the centre was nice and vacant for Luton to exploit- and exploit it they did!

Tired!  They just had 2 weeks off! It was just shambolic, looked like too many of them thought they just had to turn up to get a result. Worrying and, although many won't like it, LJ has to take shoulder some blame for allowing such a complacent approach and not changing things BEFORE inevitably going a goal down!

Yes and tactical decisions like taking off big Dave who gets no supply or help then brings on two wingers .

Not what I would do per se, but you could play something like this:

Bentley

⬇️ Pereira | Moore | Williams | Baker | O’Dowda ⬇️

Brownhill | Massengo | Rowe

Palmer (or Rodri)

Weimann
