Really gave it a special atmosphere as a kid Always remember walking from the centre to night games, and when you saw the floodlights through the night sky, with fog of cigarette smoke drifting up through the lights, it built the atmosphere and excitement in a different way from Saturday afternoon games. The old place has come a long way. First one the Lansdown , and the Williams as it was having seats fitted. Second the East end seated, and the South stand. This last one is from the old Football League Review, that used to come free in the Program. Thank you my early memories were the soccer homes picture (football homes for anyone who isn't in the usa) I was looking around the ground a while ago and could not picture my first games but just one photo has made it totally clear

I know it was pretty grim around the toilets, they even had their own tide. ! and open air ! But It was special. I started just to the left of the centre as you looked out, and people stood in the same spot each week. Strangely we stood behind the barrier so got crushed at ever goal or near miss. In the old First division days we moved to the open end, and at different times were in Dolman A block , Williams enclosure , Williams A block and now Lowe Lansdown. Yes the ground and facilities are a million times better, but I'm glad I'm an old git and had the chance to live through those great atmospheres . One thing on attendance, I think the Evening Post gave one, maybe 2 figures of around 40k , estimated. As the gates at the back of the Open end were kicked open a couple of times, used to have the clipping, sadly long gone now. They were great years. I started attending around 1972 around 10 years old and remember now every part of the ground i watched city up to about 1989. Great years, great atmosphere, part of growing up. My dad first took me to the east end and in later years to the enclosure plus when I got a bit older the open end with my mates in my late teens and got up close to the double fence that separated us and the away fans and that was a brave spot to be. In the early 80s i sat mid section of the dolman stand about four rows back and remember then it was cramped and I was only a little tacker then so probably now to fat to sit on those seats again. Got to admit the stadium now is great and ready for the club in the prem league but almost everyone on OTIB has memories of the old Ashton Gate which will stay with us.
