Ashton Gate Stadium to go cashless

Sir Geoff

Recommended Posts

At 62 I probably fall into the older generation category. I dislike cashless, not because I don't understand or have problems using cards, Ive had them for decades, but simply that I know where I am with cash. My preference has always been to remove cash from an ATM and then use cash from my wallet to make payments. I don't get lost with what I'm spending as if its not I'm my wallet I can't spend it. I won't go into a cashless pub  so I'll just have tp spend more in the Coopers.

I get that some people like using cash but to blindly assume that "older people" won't be able to cope is a tad OTT and a ridiculous assumption to make!

Based on the fact my dad is moaning about it!

I wonder whether it will also go along with some type of Pre-Paid card method, I know a couple of clubs already have this. So you would be able to top your Season Cards or Membership card up with money and then use that.

This has to be an option surely. But I guess ST’s will then have to be sophisticated enough to be able to add money to them.

Was at the Motorpoint Arena a couple of weeks back,  all the bars on the ground floor were cashless certainly worked in cutting the queue time down. Sooner they bring it it the better as far as I'm concerned.

But it's a myth that cashless always cuts down waiting time. At the Cardiff City stadium I went straight to the front using cash while there was a queue for those using their cards.

I see this as a positive move - although I will still need my trusty £3.50 for my programme (unless, of course, they are going to give the vendors one of those card readers?)

And the charity collectors, can’t rattle a bucket of contactless!

Actually I do wonder about the charity collectors with less and less people carrying actually money, especially loose change. Donations must be affected?

I would never use a pre-paid card because adding money to a card would be, in effect, giving City an interest free loan.

There are already a lot of companies that supply contactless collection devices for charities. The downside is these involve a charge that reduces the amount going to the charity.

All the bars were cashless so you wouldn't have got served at the Motorpoint.

I suppose it will get around the fact that half their bar staff seem incapable of working out change.  Another life skill that will be no longer required in near future, along with spelling and basic arithmetic.

Ha ha I know. Most tills now work out the change too, all they have to do is count up the coins/notes to that amount. Remember when people actually had to add up things in our heads and subtract them from the note you were handed and give correct change, all whilst serving!

God I feel old ?

Cashless does speed up things a lot though, I almost never use cash for anything

People think Bristol is a bit behind the times.

The posts here sort of prove it.

FFS!

Not really. 99% OF People will be fine. But there will be 1% of people, mainly of the older generation, who still use cash. Thats everywhere, not just bristol.

No not at all. Can Bristol Sport actions negatively affect others? The disabled? The elderly? The vulnerable? Yes. Your post and others display the same laissez-fair attitude to others as can be found anywhere else.

This may seem a good idea by the young men in suits running things, for me it's no problem - I pay for everything I possibly can by card even if it's only a couple of quid - but look around AG on matchday and there's a very large ageing section of the fanbase....a sea of grey heads as I look along the Lansdown.  They'll probably just not bother buying anything rather than getting to grips with new tech.

This is the sort of thing that should be sounded out through fan groups and the SC & T (maybe it was?) and ...whisper it...the SLO.

I do agree with you but many other sports stadia have implemented this, if they can cope why can't we?

It's not a new thing, I used to work in the casino industry and  15-20 years ago I trained staff to deal American Roulette and Blackjack, All the payouts were added up in the dealers heads and we had long established techniques to help with that aspect, but there was still some mental arithmetic involved. The younger the trainee, the less likely they were to have a basic grasp of maths. :(

See my reply above.

Many other places already do this, why are we any different?

And the homeless.

I would guess we have all given a few coins to someone who is down on their luck over the years, but if people stop carrying cash.

Oh, and what about the muggers? They'll be able to manage a couple of thirty quid purchases with your card before it gets stopped and they'll run the risk of being caught on CCTV when they do so. Won't someone think about them?

Since they ramped up the prices in the sports bar at the start of the season, I hardly spend anything in the stadium these days, occasionally I get a coffee but that's about it.

Still, if going cashless quickens things up then I am happy to encourage it.

Totally agree, I also buy the occasionally coffee but never drink alcohol or eat at the ground.

Sorry but that’s nonsense. Getting to grips with new technology? Holding a card under a scanner? I’m sure there will be some people who maybe only ever pay with cash but as stated in the full article, there will still be opportunities to do so, programme sellers for one.

Well many many places do not. It is not necessary. It is not wholly beneficial to all. It can be a negative.

Read my earlier post about how Bristol Sport uncaring actions led to a person with a disability deciding to cease coming to Ashton Gate.

Is that your we?

Just because others treat people unevenly, poorly your we does not have to follow. Its an excuse for ignorance.
