This year vs Last year

Great to see, up to now I'd say we've been at our weakest possible team (realistically anyway, obviously it's possible to have even more injures).

If Fammy plays like he did yesterday, we don't need Nketiah. However, with Nketiah, Dasilva, Kalas & a fit Smith, we should be in the mix all season.

We're finally playing a 433, of sorts, and we look bloody good in it too.

Surprising that we were that far behind last season.

For comparison with previous seasons;

Bristol City after 20 matches in the same league / division

2019-2020 20 9 8 3 33 28 35 -
2018-2019 20 7 5 8 24 24 26 + 9 pts

GF is the highest it's been (12-13 wasn't bad!). Is a striker the problem...

Last season we were 14th after 20 games and only started to pick up form during December. Game 18 was our 4th defeat in a row (away at Leeds) but we then didn't lose again until game 32 away at Norwich, and we won 7 in a row in that unbeaten run.

Said this many times already. 3rd top scorers. Scoring is not the problem! Another top striker would be great but currently only 6 teams with worse goals conceded.
That will be where we do well or not this season imo.

Its a valid point.

Only WBA have scored more and yet we only have +5 goal difference.

But with Dasilva to come back from injury, we'll have a fully fit squad of very good defenders and, with Nagy and Massengo now in front of them releasing Brownhill to move forward, we should see the goal difference improve imo.

Do we need another striker ? Yes imo.

We've only got Diedhiou supported by Weimann (Rodri doesn't appear to be in the frame and Semenyo isn't ready and it now looks as if he needs another loan).

Rodri will be gone Semenyo not quite up to it, that only leaves 2 fit strikers when LJ wants 4. An on loan prem striker is a must. Weiman may need a rest soon too.

Looking at that table though, shows how things can change for every team. Leeds were 2nd with a four point cushion, but only made the P/Os. Sheff U were 6th on GD but went up auto. Villa were eighth, but made the P/Os and won them. Derby were seventh and they also made the P/Os.

Rodri was brought in as cover but hasn’t really been needed. He’s looked decent when I’ve seen him, so not sure why he’s being written off.

'Cause this is OTIB - it's what we do!

I don't think our defence is a huge problem, our goals against shows how much losing our best defenders has cost us, it should improve once we are back to full strength.

Having said that, in just 4 games or roughly 20% of the season to date, we've conceded 13 goals or nearly 50% of our conceded goals for the season so far!

Leeds 3-1

Preston 3-3

Luton 3-0

WBA 4-1

That leaves 15 goals spread out over the other 16 games, that's pretty decent to be fair, we just need to cut out these high scoring defeats/losses.

Agree re the defence, as we've had virtually our first choice defence sidelined for much of the season,

However, don't underestimate the impact of losing Nagy, as with him back Lj can play a much different midfield, which seems able to be stronger both defensively and offensively. While players like Brownhill and Massengo might attract plaudits- Brownhill because of match winning goals and Massengo  because, well because he's Massengo-   I think the job Nagy does goes relatively unnoticed by many, but we certainly missed him when he wasn't playing.

P.S. I meant to add that playing Nagy enables Lj to go with a back 4 and this enables him to include Elliason - a very big plus!!

I think both of you are correct. Though I don't think Nagy's contribution is relatively unnoticed overall, he is certainly key to our defending.

@Bristol is redmakes a very interesting point about the distribution of the goals we have conceded, which is encouraging with key players returning or on their way back. Hopefully our defensive record will now stabilise.

Hmmm.........we’ve had these season v season comparisons before and I remember commenting at the time that these comparisons tell us nothing other than as an academic exercise.

The Championship is different in as much there have been promotions from L1, relegations from the PL. other Championship clubs have become stronger or weaker via the transfer windows. City are certainly stronger than this time last season.........and just one reason why these comparisons are pretty pointless.
