Dr Balls
Much though it is easy to suggest Luton were there for the taking, we have previously struggled against similar teams near the bottom of the table. The difference today was the wing backs giving us an outlet. In previous games, we have been so easy to play against. Play 2 up front and pressurise our central defenders and we have been unable to play out. Today both Dasilva and Hunt provide that outlet down the flanks. The first goal cane from Dasilva bringing the ball out of defence and giving it to Eliasson in the opposition half, allowing him to take on the full back. His cross led to Watkins’s goal. The second and third goals were down to Hunt being further forward, drawing the foul for the penalty for the second, and brilliant play between him & Weimann for the third. Watkins definitely helped as a strong outlet on the right, able to hold off defenders and keep the ball alive. But it was having extra forward impetus from the wing backs that really made the difference today. It will be interesting to see what LJ does against Brentford. I would encourage him to continue with wing backs. Otherwise he has to play Taylor Moore in a back 3, because we need someone to bring it out from the back, and neither Kakas or Willians will do that for us. Davefevs
We didn’t play “wingbacks” as such today (as in wingbacks as part of a back 3/5), we played traditional full-backs in a back 4....it’s just that we got them forward effectively and often. Jay from his ability on the ball. Jack, because often Williams chipped the ball over the press for him in space, where he was able to get forward. So, in essence, your saying we played with wing backs.

Ska Junkie
Not a criticism of Tommy Rowe in any way as he's done a blinding job but wasn't it good to see Jay back at the Gate? The kid just oozes class.

Dr Balls
24 minutes ago, Davefevs said: No, I’m not. Dave you don’t need to play 3/5 at the back to have wing backs. Liverpool play with Alexander-Arnold and Robertson as wing backs with 2 centre backs. The difference was that we had outlets and width, plus it freed up Eliasson and Watkins to look to play forward rather than struggle with the ball in their own half. Sheffield United do it with their 3 centre backs, leaving just 1 at the back, while Ayling apparently had a stormer for Leeds today playing wide from the back. The point is it gives more players going forward for the opposition defence to have to deal with and outlets from the back.

You're right, I would just call them attack minded full-backs though, but I’m old fashioned
Roger Red Hat
England in '66 world cup, back 4 with over lapping full backs.
Mr Popodopolous
Always associated wing backs more with a back 3. I'd say they were attacking full backs today but when you're positive as we were today, perhaps not a huge difference. Whatever we call them though, the return of DaSilva improved the balance. Gave us another strong outlet. Rowe has been filling in well overall in the circs, for half a season in two unnatural positions but to have two orthodox, positive fullbacks will help a lot from now on. Ska Junkie
All about striking a balance gents / ladies. Our stats would suggest we're okay going forward but far too open in the goals conceded column. Given Fam's defensive prowess (he wins a load of headers from set plays), I really don't know where the problem lies. Balance?
