Never to the dark side

it's a nonsense. The easy response is to draw cash from a cashpoint from your credit card, deposit the same money back into your current account, and hey presto (the Credit Card Company makes more money) and in all probability the gambler still eventually loses the cash.

Sadly, you're spot on.

If they're so minded, it wouldn't be difficult to still utilise a credit card - lose lose for the punter, win win for the credit card co. and most likely, the bookies ?

Partially agree, but what you’re describing there requires that much more time and physical effort. That in itself reduces the “impulse time” you have to act and in itself, may prevent the act.

I’m not saying it’s a “cure all” - however if you start from the basis that credit card gamblers are more likely to be problem gamblers, and this stops - say - 20% of them, it’s got to be worthwhile? If 100 people need help it’s better to help 20 than none?

What's the alternative? Do nothing?

It requires a lot of effort to go to the cash point and then withdraw money and then deposit it into account.

depends on where you live as to how much effort is required...if you live near a cashpoint it isn't difficult. A little pre planning can build you a healthy "float" in your gambling account. I'm certainly not saying "do nothing". I'm surprised that the use of Credit Cards is allowed on Gambling sites (shows my ignorance). My remark was aimed at those who will find a way around a problem if they are determined enough...in this case, out of control gambling.

True. Withdrawal of cash from a credit card shouldn’t be allowed but as interest rates are sky high for cash transactions on credit I don’t forsee a change happening anytime soon

Absolutely spot on.

But then they would also need to go to whoever they bank with to deposit the cash and they themselves continue to dwindle in numbers.

There needs to be systems in place where if someone is spending a unsustainable amount of money on gambling sites then their cards become blocked or something.

This is a positive step forward, I wish it also applied to video games and their loot boxes. I have known many people spend hundreds on their credit card on loot boxes because they say it doesn't feel like they are spending real money as it doesn't need to be paid for immediately.

I have no idea what a loot box is, but I think the common problem is easy money and easy credit whatever way you look at it

The rule will help hugely imo, yes you will not stop people doing what you are saying but you will stop people doing it late at night when they are bored, or when they are drunk etc.

Should never have been allowed in the first place - but it comes down to big business doing what they see fit and they don't really care about problem gamblers, they welcome them with open arms and then give them freebies until they bleed them for every penny they have. Yet anyone with half a clue cannot get a pound on your average horse race or any sporting event....

Why do you think casinos give you little bits of plastic - yes it maybe easier to payout etc, but it is mainly because it tells your brain you are not spending real cash.

Just had a look at Sportsdevil on my android box and it is showing on a the lists of a couple of the different scrapers, whether that means much I don't know. Tried out my new superfast broadband last night and even with the VPN it was plenty fast enough, so, fingers crossed.... :)

It's getting less and less common for me to have any cash in my pocket. Businesses have a lot less cash takings now as well. We went to Amsterdam recently and no one wanted cash from us at all.

I was at the Excel in London a couple of weeks ago and went to 3 different places for a coffee and couldn't pay with cash. I generally only ever pay with cash as I like to know what I am spending as I go out with what I am willing to spend. I still have a debit card for cashless but only use it I have to.

Normally need to take out credit to buy anything at the ExCel!

Slightly unrelated I know. But I saw this on tv the other day and thought it was a great idea. Partly because fewer and fewer people have cash for the homeless and partly because you can be more sure of where that cash is going.  Started in Bristol, hopefully it will spread.

It wasn`t really that long ago that I was surprised when someone paid for something as cheap as a coffee with a card. Now it`s the norm.
