Negging

Recommended Posts

Is a topic that arises in this week's episode of One Stream in Bristol, does Lee Johnson do it to young players?

Me, Pete and Oscar all discuss the two games this week as well as some other interesting topics like;

How upset are we with Rodri going?

Do we need a Director of Football?

Is Mark's Bread any good?

As always we're keen to hear people's thoughts on the topics discussed! Always good to see comments on these threads.

Superb listen. One of the very best for me. Good debate on the singing (82 v 21) and the disjointed strategies of signings and tactics.

I admire your efforts but I doubt that the average City fan would know what ‘negging’ means? I do, but only because of my extensive online work projects over the years, but I think if you used ‘normal English’ you’d reach a wider audience ...

Have you listened to this podcast? Or previous ones? It’s not like they speak jive.

It’s just part of the title guys. It’s less than 10 seconds of the show. For clarity:

Negging is an act of emotional manipulation whereby a person makes a deliberate backhanded compliment or otherwise flirtatious remark to another person to undermine their confidence and increase their need of the manipulator's approval.

Thanks Dave. That’s a really good explanation, for you.

There’s an entire book on it that was the origin, basically the science behind it and how effective it is to use for single people..

Morning Pete... am I right in thinking you’re on OSIB this week? I’m hoping you’re going to be bringing some LJ out undertones to the show as I feel we’re under represented.

Cheers Stan.

A definitive shift this week to a disquiet with the way the club is being run. By which I mean player/transfer policy.

Goes hand in hand with not knowing our identity. If we don't have a way of playing, how can we ever expect to recruit to match?

Haha, we were are still at the very neutral phase at the mo. Lots of fair questions & points raised for both ends of the fence. Listen and all will be revealed ;)

Johnson with the dildo in the kitchen. Brilliant.

That was almost the episode title. I definitely would’ve lost as it was in the dressing room!275D8ABA-22D7-4A64-A980-5E5EB87BE5D3.jpeg.022a35cf6663056ca0124ffdcfb13a51.jpeg

Stan. Agree re subs. He left it so late as to ensure he couldn’t be + or - .  You could tell he was bricking getting it wrong. Was discussing it with Macca for 20 minutes!

Semenyo and COD spent 15 minutes staring at him and each other waiting for a decision.

I noticed them warming up closer and closer to the benches, seemingly in the hope that they'd be noticed if they stood nearer.

They did indeed. At one point Callum was in the groin stretch position looking at LJ he ended up doing the splits!!

This episode finally showed us what the pod has been missing all along...

Please can @Shtanley present all future episodes with a thick Barnsley accent?

A great listen. Very interesting points made about a DoF role and the transfer strategy (or lack of).

Shameless self-promotion here but we clipped out the moment "Negging" was mentioned and posted it to twitter. So here it is for context.

Love the pod, think this is absolute tosh though.

A bit like the criticism of Johnson for his different approach to Kalas and Moore.

Individuals respond to different types of feedback. I coach a kids team, 15 year olds. I've got a whole host of different personalities. Some, like my Polish winger who's not really had any discipline in his life, needs a robust bollocking to get the best out of him as he craves that father figure showing an interest. It motivates him to prove me wrong. Others, like my quiet but talented centre mid need a cuddle and some praise before every match to boost his confidence. If I switched approaches between those two individuals the results would be horrific.

There's definitely not a one size fits all approach to man management. I'd argue that Diedhiou has done well for us so you can't really argue with Johnson's management of him, likewise Moore is getting better and better which is down to coaching as much as anyone else.

Couldn't agree more, I do absolutelty love the pod. It's overtaken football Ramble for me as my top football podcast.

Stan and Oscar have created something very special and we are lucky as fans to have something this good associated with the club.

You should address them all as 'vermin', or 'sub-human scum', and if they get upset call them snowflakes and encourage the other kids to point and laugh. It's character building...

My first listen - thank you for doing this.

Firstly Re Negging- I worked for someone after an M&A and corporate restructure  for whom this was a predominant management style. I knew it was weirdly dysfunctional and couldn’t understand it. Thanks for the clear definition on that.

Re the podcast- great stuff. Good production quality . Great voices and knowledge and a pleasure to listen to.

I really think if you had the discipline to keep it to an hour, maximum, it would be punchier. The hardest thing in journalism / media is taking the time to make something shorter. From 35 minutes on though I loved the discussion.

Thank you

If you haven't listened already you really should...
