BTRFTG
Yes. Industrial level 'demolition' of the terrace. The police dog handler who fell over in the mêlée and was bitten by his own mutt......

Tipps69
I believe I was there although at that time I was only 12, I definitely remember being there at quite a young age & it kicking off big time at Elm Park but can’t say for definite if it was 1984 or if this was a later visit to Elm Park? swanker
Went up there with a van load of lads from around our way. (Barton Hill) Strangest thing that happened was being sat in the stand before the game and when the players ran out everyone followed them on to the pitch and ran straight across to where the Reading fans were. fond memories partly because the young lad who drove us there had cancer and died not long after
Oh Louie louie
Elm park had a bit of atmosphere. Unlike that souless place that got now in the middle of nowhere. Last time i went there we lost in a cup match and i recall gilkes getting a hat trick in the 2nd leg. Ive never returned to that new ground since tinnion scored under pulis. The police had stasi like tactics that day.
weepywall
Yes i went, probably the worst I've ever seen, had a couple of mates who spent some time at HMP after that. Front page news in all the tabloids.
Never to the dark side
Had planned to attend attend the game with my two young sons, but a flu bug got hold of us all,and we didn't attend. In one way maybe a good decision that we didn't go.
Scrumpty
Interesting day out - five of us travelled up, three came home. Stockport the following week was almost as bad. 3

Bedred31
Blimey, yes. Elm Park had atmosphere but the view from the away terrace was diabolical. I recall anther dodgy away trip by football train special to promotion rivals York. Think it was around the same time?
Scrumpylegs
Easy to see why football attendances hit an all time low in the mid 80's!!
Trueredsupporter
The article doesnt really pant how dark the day was. not much problem with hooligans fighting hooligans but City fans went far beyond that.

Playing pool at the time and the cues came in very handy - saved us from a battering! We weren't given the normal area reserved for away fans, being chucked in the 'bear pit' instead (you needed to be 6ft to see the pitch), but the bear pit emptied when it kicked off in the stand behind. Different times.

Bazooka Joe
That same evening or a few nights later BBC News cited the 4 clubs with the largest "hooligan" problem as Millwall, Bristol City, Chelsea, and Leeds.

Sixtyseconds
When you are young you want to see how far you can push things. How extreme and mad can we be. Things went too far that day. Know a few now regret it. Had a mate who got eighteen months in the big house for the Reading game. Wasn't a bad lad and it made a mess of his life.
NOTBLUE
Went to all of the matches mentioned, can also remember going to Preston which was also a bit lively, can’t remember the year, but they had not long laid their plastic pitch. Galway Red
Maybe tomorrow 'The post' will print how Rovers fans attacked families of Swindon fans with baseball bat's in a pub garden on Gloucester Road?
