Team For Birmingham Game

Recommended Posts

Do we go 2 up top with Wells and Diedhiou or do we leave it as it is given the form of Diedhiou up top on his tod ?

If 2 up top, is it 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 dropping Eliasson ?

Also, given we have a bit of time to bed in the new players, do we fit them in or do we drop players that have been doing well such as Baker and Williams ?

I think LJ will  be damned if he changes it and damned if he doesn't.

For me (could be 4-2-3-1) assuming Hunt is out;

                     Bentley

Pereira Williams Baker Dasilva

                     Smith

Weimann Henrikssen Nagy Eliasson

                  Diedhiou

Why sorry? You spelled every name correctly - the only word you got wrong was ‘bout’ in your apology!! 🤣😄🍷🕺🏻

There's no way he'll drop Hunt after his performance at QPR

This.  Wells has to start for me, Weimann has been pretty ineffective for weeks now.

So people wanna change a winning formation and team? Bit of a strange one tbh.

I get that people wanna see the new players play but for me they have to earn / wait for their chance , especially after our good form of late.

As excited I am about Nahki, he didn’t do enough in his cameo vs QPR to earn a start. Unless he comes in for an injured / rested Weimann.

This isn’t football manager. For me, we go with the same team, bar any injuries. LJ speaks about players having to play well and keeping the shirt - “The heavy shirt”. What sort of message does it send out now if he just drops a couple of players from a winning team to accommodate new signings?

Same team please LJ, with the 3 new signings on the bench.

Agree - it’s amazing to read people state I’ve never seen X play but should replace Y.   The saying is you shouldn’t change a winning team, but with Lee’s tinkering you never know.

One game this week, highly likely we will see changes next week with two games with Derby & Leeds

Its a classic stick or twist and if we lose LJ will be damned if he does and damned he doesn't, particularly with the posters who are experts of hindsight.

At least LJ will have had the benefit of seeing the players train this week and knowing whom are carrying knocks.

It a great position to be spoilt for choice, it may also include Kalas & Nagy may be back fit as well, so very difficult team selection, but will be great if we can carry on the run with a good performance in front of Sky's cameras

You’re going to drop Ashley Williams after four clean sheets in a row?  Blimey you’re hard to please!!

Unchanged team on Friday if all fit, with the possible exception of Henriksen (if he’s match fit) for Massengo and, less likely, Wells for Paterson.

I know people are saying not to drop a form team, but we have the best striker in the championship off current form in our team now.

Surely the striker with 13 goals, averaging 1 every 120 mins should make his way into our starting line up?

He’s 36 years old I would play him against derby. Merely rotation, agree he’s been great but we should use our squad to our disposal.

We need to find a way to stop Jutkiewicz from dominating, Benkovic and Baker should be more of a physical challenge than Ash Williams.

It's not that people want to 'see the new players' it's pretty likely a couple of them will start.

Wells didn't come here to be a sub, and we wouldn't have got Benkovic to put him on the bench. I predict both will start as often as possible.

Birmingham have the equal most goals from set pieces in the Championship with 16 (same as Cardiff) from a total of 37 goals.

Its obvious where their threats are and having the likes of Baker, Williams (or Benkovic if fit), and Diedhiou in the team will be important to defend those set pieces.

As a guide, we have 10 from 44 goals.

Why is it “pretty likely”?

Im sure you’re right in saying that  Wells And Benkovic didn’t come here to be a sub , but that in itself doesn’t give them the divine right to start on Friday, does it?

It's not a question of being a 'divine right' - obviously our form complicates things and makes it a hard choice for the manager. It's about the understanding we've reached with those players.

Your earlier attempt to patronise people by saying those who think the new signings would play is like 'football manager' is rather foolish; and perhaps it's you that's being naive. Benkovic is a player we wouldn't have been able to bring in ahead of Celtic and Derby had we not given assurances that he'd start as much as possible.

That could have been one of many reasons why we brought him in. In this case that is wrong though as widely reported that Rodgers close relationship with Ashton is what enabled us to get him.

It's not 'wrong' at all. Regardless whether Ashton and Rogers are pals, they'd want assurances on gametime. This isn't a business where people do favours for eachother really. Gametime in a club of appropriate quality will always supersede good relationships.

Well, that didn't exactly work for Nketiah at Leeds.

No way is Henriksen playing on Friday, hasn't kicked a ball all season, not even been in the country the last few months by all accounts.

Other than for injury there won't be any changes to starting XI.

Just advising that Henriksen played international football for Norway in November and has been training with Rosenborg.

Might not be match fit, granted, but will be pretty fit.

Not dissimilar gap between games and joining City as Williams. Williams was not training with a club, unlike Henriksen, and joined on 23.08, unused sub 31.08, started 14.09.

Suspect Henriksen in better shape. But suspect sub at best Friday.

Apart from promises of gametime don't mean anything as demonstrated by Nketiah at Leeds, Kent when he was with us etc.

Good relationships will always help, if Brendan Rodgers has 3 offers from 3 people, 2 of which are random managers and 1 of which is a personal friend he will at least look at that one first and as demonstrated here it led to us getting the player.

As soon as he's match fit he will be first choice with Smith. Bloke has captained Hull for two seasons at this level, and with the jury out on Nagy, and Massengo being so young, he's gonna be vital for us til the end of the season imo.

Agree with this to a point but we have potentially better players to pick from now and you also have to take who we are up against into account. We should play our strongest 11 against Brum whoever LJ thinks that might be. Had we signed Messi and Ronaldo in the window, would you still go unchanged?

We have just got two 1-0 wins away from home, where the home teams come on to us.

Birmingham at home is a completely different situation, ‘we’ are now the side that has to take the game to the opposition.

So it’s not a simple case of we have won 4 in a row keep the same side.

True. He might feel we can do better.

We seemed fairly comfortable defending I thought. But I feel when defending for your lives, you need to be a threat on the break which maybe we weren't quite enough in these 1-0 wins.

Or LJ may feel we should keep the ball better to relieve pressure which we don't do either.

Not criticising at all. We have looked solid and deserved to win all these games. But if he feels we can improve then he should do what he feels will make us better.

The only worry I have is I feel the key to our performances and new solid look is having Fam as a lone striker.

Going back to 442 may make us more open like we were before.

Using the anecdotal fallacies of Nketiah and Kent don't prove anything - we haven't loaned anyone from Liverpool since and Nketiah.. he was recalled from Leeds.

Of course they help, show me where I said they don't help. I think you're looking for an argument i'm making which isn't there.

It’s anyone’s guess with the new players being available.

That said, I can’t see the starting 11 being much different to the last two games - why change a winning team?

Can't see him changing the forward line or defence, Henriksen might get the nod in midfield with Brownhill gone since Nagy still carrying a knock and he's still being careful with Massengo due to his age, I get the impression his confidence has dipped a bit recently.

Exactly, Wells has to start. I'd say either replacing Pato with Weimann pushed wide, or if Weimann has a knock it's an easy like for like.

Fam is undroppable at the moment (wow!) And Wells must play to keep him on his goalscoring roll.

I would say Massengo will start again, but with his place now at risk.

Exactly, I rather we went out and played to our strengths than changing our formation/players to tactically challenge theirs.

Don’t think there would be much change from Saturday, but could see LJ potential using Weimann’s dead-leg as being an opportunity to give him a rest.  Hasn’t really rested him all season, QPR (Carabao cup) and even Shrewsbury he played 30 minutes in first tie.  Same with Hunt, why risk him.

Obviously no idea the extent of their knocks.  Was Baker hobbling too?

Anyway, if they aren’t quite 100%, then:

                                Bentley

      Pereira | Williams | Baker | Dasilva

Eliasson | Massengo | Smith (c) | Paterson

                           Wells | Diedhiou

Subs: Wollacott | Benkovic | O’Dowda | Nagy | Henriksen | Weimann | Palmer

Hunt, Kalas, Watkins, Vyner, Afobe (injured)

Maenpaa (because of club developed rule), Rowe as O’Dowda can cover LB.  I don’t include Gilmartin.  We have a strong 25 man playing squad when everyone fit.

I don’t see Henriksen starting, and I don’t see Benkovic coming in straight away with the form of Williams and Baker as a pairing, but we have lots of games, and Williams will need rest.
