Since his days as a young and upcoming goalkeeper, Rene Gilmartin has always been known as ‘Reg’.

It’s a nickname which has followed him throughout his career, which has seen him represent the likes of Walsall, Plymouth Argyle, Watford and Colchester United.

But it was back in 2005 at Walsall where Rene was told his name didn’t somewhat suit him!

“Reg comes from the first year of goalkeeping,” Gilmartin revealed in episode eight of the Robins Nest Podcast. “I had a coach called Eric McManus who was Northern Irish with fingers that came out of any angle, it looked like Spaghetti Junction.

“He was a great guy and told me ‘Rene is a romantic French name, you don’t look romantic or French so we’re not calling you Rene’.

“It started with Regie, then Reg and it’s stuck with me along the way ever since 2005.”
