Rugby - six nations

Am i right in thinking that this competition was always played so that the competing countries playing alternate matches home and away? I find it hard to believe that with only six teams to organise they have contrived to give Ireland and France two home matches each to begin their campaigns. It would appear to give them an unfair advantage ?

It's certainly not unknown. For instance, England play Ireland and then Wales at home later in this Championship. Last year Scotland played Italy and then Ireland at home in the first two rounds. Italy played Wales and then Ireland in the second and third rounds. England played Italy and Scotland at home in the last two rounds.

Scotland and Ireland both had consecutive home fixtures in 2018 as well but I can't be bothered to look any further. Having 3 home and 2 away matches or vice versa gives certain sides an advantage/disadvantage every other year anyway. It's the nature of the competition.

We probably won't play in Paris this weekend. If we get two BP wins v France and Italy if and when we play them, then we will win the tournament. I wonder if it'll end up being cancelled altogether though.

now off MR

Remaining fixtures now confirmed:

Ireland will take on Italy on 24 October, the same day as the Premiership final, with England playing the Barbarians as usual the following day.

The final round of matches will then all take place on 31 October, with Wales hosting Scotland, England playing Italy in Rome and Ireland facing France.

Wales will have to host their home fixtures away from the Principality Stadium after chief executive Martyn Phillips confirmed there will be no more international matches at the ground this year because it is being used as a temporary hospital during the coronavirus pandemic.

This year's autumn Tests are then expected to be replaced by an eight-team tournament in which the Six Nations sides will be joined by Japan and Fiji.

Harry Randall named in England's Six Nations squad, along with Earl, Malins and Sinckler.

Excellent news for Randall, the form 9 in the country at the moment.

Sinckler hasn't been included though, due to his ban. Which is good news as we'll have him for 4 weeks post Sale.

What an awful 3 matches so far this weekend.

England today just highlighted the problems they have. Picking out of form players, or players who haven’t played in months and asking them to kick the ball away whenever they get it.

We have the largest pool of players in the world, some of whom are playing excellently at club level, and that was the best Eddie can come up with? Embarrassing

As bad as England have played in a long time. No structure, pattern or discernible style of play, kicked away far too much ball, the back 3 could've sat in the stands and watched for how much ball they received. Unusually timid in the forwards, not until Lawes & Cowan-Dickie came on that some pressure applied but too late. Match for me summed up in 2nd half when replacement scrum half Dan Robson just hacked at the ball in the middle of a melee of players....Jones has much work to do. Credit to Scotland, kept control of possession and territory but must have been panicking with only one score in the game after missing 2 relatively straightforward kicks at goal.

Farrell is going to be 32 at the next World Cup.  Surely he's got to be hooked from his role as captain?  He doesn't deserve his place in the team.  His record at 10 for England is awful. He seems to only function at 12 with Ford at 10 who is possibly the 3rd best English 10.

Basically the pair of them are a barrier to the progression of both Joe Simmonds and Marcus Smith who need to gain the experience now to be ready to play in the World Cup.  The same applies at 9 where Harry Randall and Alex Mitchell need proper experience.

The agreement that Saracens players would continue to get picked no matter what is going to have some really negative effects in the longer term.

The position of the captain also being the "main" kicker doesn't work well for me. How many would Farrell have to miss in a match before he gave someone else a chance?

Very lucky from Wales, no idea what Davies is thinking kicking it away, lucky for them that Billy Burns went for it when he clearly shouldn’t have.

Thought Sheedy did well in his cameo, a couple of good tackles and a superb clearance kick to relive some pressure. Scotland will be licking their lips though at that match up next week

Had a feeling Burns would do that. The rest of them must want to kick **** out of him in the changing room afterwards.

Understandably so, he thought he was prime Henson for a second, silly thing to do with the match at stake.

Highlights though how badly Ireland need someone to step into Sextons boots, he’s 36 and a shadow of the player he was 3 years ago, yet he still gets in at 10 due to the lack of quality outside of him

Have the three not so wise monkeys been moonlighting as England R U coaches ?

Watching the preview today a frequent comment is how poorly prepared the saracens players were.

How about picking some other players then?

RFU Solution - give Saracens a free promotion back to the  premiership next season despite there being no relegations!
