I left the 'security' to make my way to the safety of our car only to find 2 leeds fans waiting to attack a defenceless 16 year old me! Amazingly, a PC and his helmet came to the rescue. His helmet had a silver nipple on top that made an amazing noise as he belted them on their heads with it. If Julie H is going tomorrow, please thank your opposite number. The original East End was just an amazing place to be .... the more recent East End was so far removed in comparison, the youngsters who think the seated East End was great have sadly missed out on a proud terrace that, in its pomp, was as good as any .... Started in the centre-block, then moved to the small terrace at the back of the stand to the right of the exit, then to the corner on the Grandstand side. He was always there in the 80s used to sing non stop, funny character, Did red beard always wear denim and have curly hair? Guest Posted February 15, 2020 Report Share Posted February 15, 2020 By far the most visits were to the East End, watched The Dolman rise from the ground and actually spent its first 2 seasons sat in there with a ST, right on the halfway line, but The Eastend was the favourite. Can remember a couple of times sitting on the benches around the inside and quite a few visits to the Enclosure and also a couple to the open end but always went back to the place to be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Early doors used to get the coach from near Soundwell Baths to the ground before I could drive, which parked up in the car park, also bus to the centre a few times as well but always spent too much and ended up walking back home to Kingswood.(so what it was a day at the match) Many awaydays inc ; local Cardiff and Swindon visits on the train marching down the roads en mass are remembered, as are many train trips to London for QPR, Charlton, Fulham etc, often seeing our players on the train. Coaches (Wessex wasnt it?) to; Blackpool, Bolton,Burnley, Preston, Leics, Southampton and Watford etc where strangely got chased back to the coach park; many more not registering at the moment. It was normal in those days to get in the ground early to get your usual spot but that Spurs game I got in at about 2.15 and our usual area, just above the entrance path, was so packed out we had to go on the steps beneath it. You could see all these unfamiliar faces above were City fans, but very different from the usual type who stood there, and there was a huge air of anticipation. Not long after Spurs fans started to filter in quietly from the top of the EE entrance slope - you could tell them a mile off as they strode cockily along the gangway looking towards the middle of the EE - and when a couple of dozen or so were in the City fans absolutely piled into them from the steps above. They literally didn't know what hit them. There was a reception committee in the EE for all the London clubs. Sometimes the away fans barely got through the turnstiles or got a bit further before being recognised and confronted in the top right hand corner. Whether these defenders of the EE were Parkenders who moved back there for the day or just fans who only turned up when an incursion, and brawl, was thought likely I don't know, but the Park End looked as full as ever that Spurs day from memory. Knew him only by face but genuinely a real terrace hero for a callow teen like myself, and was deeply saddened to read about his death online and finally put a name to a face. A very vocal supporter who seemed larger than life. Lads like him really made the Open End what it was and memories of him leading us in song still ring bright and fresh. For some reason, I always remember him leading a protest against Jimmy Lumsden, bellowing out full voice "WE WANT FOOTBALL". An absolute viking. I think there was a thread about him on here after he died and he was held in very high regard by all who knew him. That his legendary status extended to people such as myself who didn't know him personally says much for the full throttle passion that emanated from him. Used to grip onto the railings while my uncle stood in the back corner nearest the East End. Grandad was block B, row A, seat 1 in the old stand. Spent a few years in the East End before getting a season ticket in the Dolman with the rest of the family.Had a season ticket in the Williams before chucking it away after SoD and McInnes. All I can remember of what was reported in the press around Luton at the time was of the 5 pointed star with pen knife blades attached. Glad that there was an arrest and nobody died. Remember doing this on a regular basis and also being met on one occasion by a Portsmouth fan waving a bloody big knife and duly retreated, only for me to be whacked by a copper! Half time “bother” continued in the park, with police horses charging up on down. Worst of all all gates were shut and couldn’t get back in to see the second half!
