Was this the game at Elland Road when we won 0-2?

If it was, I must have been right next to you (1978?) as I remember the policeman saying this only to receive complaints of a them vs a handful of us type comments!

Eventually the police allowed us to be flanked by one or two policemen and escorted us towards the old greyhound stadium.

Our car was parked in a field opposite. I left the 'security' to make my way to the safety of our car only to find 2 leeds fans waiting to attack a defenceless 16 year old me!

Amazingly, a PC and his helmet came to the rescue. His helmet had a silver nipple on top that made an amazing noise as he belted them on their heads with it.

If Julie H is going tomorrow, please thank your opposite number. Doubtful you'd be allowed to use this manoeuvre today!

Ha top work from the nipple heads ????

While the thread has concentrated on movement around the ground, there was quite a movement around the East End over the years.

Started in the centre-block, then moved to the small terrace at the back of the stand to the right of the exit, then to the corner on the Grandstand side.

Often, during the bad times on the pitch, where people were standing became as fascinating as the match itself.

Great memories and stories here. Thanks, takes me back.

Noticeable what posters are from that era, and that a lot the people that post the most today aren't from that time.

I might be wrong, but back in the day, it felt that all sections of the ground were 'more together'.

Park Ender to start aged 6 i think, with my Dad, balancing on a white wooden stool that he made for me to stand on. Remained in the Park End for a few years before becoming an East Ender, where i began to start chants, real comaradarie and humour, many a surge too! Remember hearing about the Bradford fire and possibly Hillsborough over the tannoy whilst in there, sending chills through the bones. Chelsea in FA Cup 3rd round was something too....Then up to B block in the Dolman, happy times up there on the back row. Like others have mentioned, sometimes only known by face, hardly by name - 'Mad Mike' was the only one i knew!!

Not quite such a visitor these days due to work location and young daughter oop north, but my Dad is ST holder in the Dolman - watching his beloved City a stones throw from his former home on Coronation Rd. And it was he who took me for my first ever game.

Always got the memories - the ground might change and the atmosphere might be different but for those of us who remember those special days n nights...we wouldn't have it any other way!! #CTID #OTIB #COYR

Butler? Is that you? Can’t remember if this is your ‘handle’.
If that’s you then I’d guess a few posters would recognise your ‘song starting’ you refer to.

As I was a Luton Town fan then and had come down with my Bristol City fan dad I can tell you what the fuss was all about. Nobody had got knifed that day BUT a five pointed star made out of pen knives had been found close to the pitch.

"It wasn't me wot threw it me lud, as I was sitting in the main grandstand."

A City fan was definitely stabbed in the open end over an hour before the game.

Rumour going round during the game he had died, thankfully not true, but he was very seriously injured.

The incident made the national news. I remember listening to Radio Luxembourg - the only place you seemed to be able to get up to date late news in those days - and it was reported at about midnight the City fan was in intensive care and the outcome was touch and go.

Thankfully he survived.

A Luton fan was arrested for the attack; all given very wide publicity at the time.

By far the most visits were to the East End, watched The Dolman rise from the ground and actually spent its first 2 seasons sat in there with a ST, right on the halfway line, but The Eastend was the favourite.

Can remember a couple of times sitting on the benches around the inside and quite a few visits to the Enclosure and also a couple to the open end but always went back to the place to be.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early doors used to get the coach from near Soundwell Baths to the ground before I could drive, which parked up in the car park, also bus to the centre a few times as well but always spent too much and ended up walking back home to Kingswood.(so what it was a day at the match)

Many awaydays inc ; local Cardiff and Swindon visits on the train marching down the roads en mass are remembered, as are many train trips to London for QPR, Charlton, Fulham etc, often seeing our players on the train. Coaches (Wessex wasnt it?) to; Blackpool, Bolton,Burnley, Preston, Leics, Southampton and Watford etc where strangely got chased back to the coach park; many more not registering at the moment.

Most of the old grounds are gone now as is our own, there`s not one side left from my first visit :sad26:

Sorry uf already mentioned but am sure the Parkenders used to come in the East end if they got wind of an away team mob going to take the East End. The Parkenders used to group high up just after the entrance and pile into any away fans. Think this is what happened when Spurs came into the East End....that ended up in carnage!

I spent the 4 First Division seasons in that open area next to the Enclosure just after you come into the EE.

It was normal in those days to get in the ground early to get your usual spot but that Spurs game I got in at about 2.15 and our usual area, just above the entrance path, was so packed out we had to go on the steps beneath it.

You could see all these unfamiliar faces above were City fans, but very different from the usual type who stood there, and there was a huge air of anticipation.

Not long after Spurs fans started to filter in quietly from the top of the EE entrance slope - you could tell them a mile off as they strode cockily along the gangway looking towards the middle of the EE - and when a couple of dozen or so were in the City fans absolutely piled into them from the steps above.

They literally didn't know what hit them.

There was a reception committee in the EE for all the London clubs. Sometimes the away fans barely got through the turnstiles or got a bit further before being recognised and confronted in the top right hand corner. Whether these defenders of the EE were Parkenders who moved back there for the day or just fans who only turned up when an incursion, and brawl, was thought likely I don't know, but the Park End looked as full as ever that Spurs day from memory.

There was a guy from bedminster who went grey young called ian.

He was always there in the 80s used to sing non stop, funny character,

Did red beard always wear denim and have curly hair?

If i got the right guy he lived on kings head lane a few years ago,

Yes and yes! Knew him only by face but genuinely a real terrace hero for a callow teen like myself, and was deeply saddened to read about his death online and finally put a name to a face. A very vocal supporter who seemed larger than life. Lads like him really made the Open End what it was and memories of him leading us in song still ring bright and fresh.

For some reason, I always remember him leading a protest against Jimmy Lumsden, bellowing out full voice "WE WANT FOOTBALL". An absolute viking. I think there was a thread about him on here after he died and he was held in very high regard by all who knew him. That his legendary status extended to people such as myself who didn't know him personally says much for the full throttle passion that emanated from him.

RIP

Well, the City fan nearly died so quite a big mistake to state no one got knifed that day.

As I said, a headline on the national news and very widely reported.

Started in the enclosure around the time of Spurs league Cup semi final. Used to grip onto the railings while my uncle stood in the back corner nearest the East End. Grandad was block B, row A, seat 1 in the old stand. Spent a few years in the East End before getting a season ticket in the Dolman with the rest of the family.Had a season ticket in the Williams before chucking it away after SoD and McInnes. Now go in the South Stand when I can.

My apologies. I wasn't trying to trivialise what had happened as memories can often erase the truth. All I can remember of what was reported in the press around Luton at the time was of the 5 pointed star with pen knife blades attached.

Glad that there was an arrest and nobody died.

Back in the good old days you could be a East ender and  park ender in the same match as they used to open the gates at half time, I often used to swap ends to whichever one city were attacking, can you imagine that happening today.

Remember doing this on a regular basis and also being met on one occasion by a Portsmouth fan waving a bloody big knife and duly retreated, only for me to be whacked by a copper! Half time “bother” continued in the park, with police horses charging up on down. Worst of all all gates were shut and couldn’t get back in to see the second half!

The Luton guy (Turnball) got off with it, despite being picked out by the stabbed lads brother

First time i went in the park end i paid 70 pence.

It went up to 1, 10p the next season.

I think it was 3 quid for a adult then.

The wonderful era of pay at the gate.

Many who worked on match days, would turn up 30 minutes or more after kick off. (the game, not the aggro).
