Hunt and De Silva

I am sorry to say that I find Hunt and De Silva both great going forward but really lacking defensively.

The amount of space that oppo wide men have is really worrying and this is backed up by the number of crosses which are fired in from each flank or just general attacks coming in from the wings.

They keep going missing or are out of position and its frustrating.

There have been several posts today in regards to players not being able to play to their ability. Not sure if LJ though is totally to the blame. The squad he has available is the best in the championship. However what is he doing seems he has not got a clue on how to play them.

It’s not going to happen but Steve Lansdown needs to tell LJ to have a holiday for 3 weeks. Then let the playing team decide on how they want to play and I think we will all be surprised of the outcome

That's exactly why we were happy to let Ayling go.

He was great at bombing forward but left a gaping hole at the back when he did so.

If we're only replacing him with players who do the same then we should have kept him.

I am not sure how much of this is by design though, every full back we have had since LJ took over has backed off and backed off allowing all the time in the world for the opposition to cross, so it must be at least partly under instruction.

I don’t see this with Dasilva. Is this because he was 2v1 half the first half yesterday? Once O’Dowda come on that wing was almost completely shut down. Helder Costa could be the best in the league at that position and once JD didn’t have to worry about Ayling I am not sure Costa went by him.

Kalas didn’t let Leeds get behind him as much but was continuously easily beaten 1v1. Didn’t make a tackle or block a cross. Not his best position and back from injury but that is what happen when you don’t have a specialist fullback against top players. Hunt would have helped us more yesterday but think LJ wants fullbacks who can play as well and unfortunately most good defending fullbacks are not as good on the ball as the ones we have. The ones good at both are a division higher. Best way to get more from them is have the ball more.

De Silva is a class left back. You're talking out your arse!

Dasilva’s problem yesterday was that he was left exposed having to cover 2 players and Leeds made the most of that.  When O’Dowda came in he was less exposed but LJ left it too long to do something about it as it was pretty obvious.  He massively improved once he had that cover in front of him.

Exactly. Dasilva is a very good left-back but he can only be as organised as the rest of the defence are and needs support from the midfield too. I think it is easy to look at full backs in isolation but, perhaps even more so than centre-backs, their ability to operate well defensively depends massively on what other players are dong. If you have one full back defending against a winger and an over-lapping full-back, and also having to watch what is going on in the box too, they are going to look exposed however good they are.

I believe both Hunt and Dasilva to be technically better players than Ayling.

Ayling ‘ bombing forward ‘ was a chaotic affair , no one knew what was going to happen when he did .

Not the first time. Against Brum, in the first half at least, both our full backs were constantly exposed because NE and JP were not getting back to provide cover.

Ok lets agree to disagree. With our recent signings are you saying we still do not have the players available for LJ to reach at least the play offs ?

Look out of the square and think what the real issue is. It is only my opinion and its 7.00pm in OZ and too many glasses of reds but we have the squad with lots of potential that has  been closely put together but the players are put in positions out of their natural ability and the game plan doesn’t change and when we play a team like Leeds we are timid and not agreesive or on the front foot.

Think we have spent more on players than most of the teams mentioned so it's going wrong somewhere.

Yep, Leeds, forest and Brentford have all had a much better recruitment plan. It does seem though, with the January signings in particular, that we’re getting better with our recruitment

Let's hope so, it gets frustrating seeing teams above us that as you say just seem to find or develop players so much better than we have in the past.

Not sure anyone is on the front foot against Leeds at Elland Road. I'd agree though, we have a top 6 squad, no more, no less.  I personally think we are doing really well with what we have, and what we have looks better than what we had 1 month ago. I didn't think Leeds away would be anything other than 10 behind the ball and hope for a breakaway or set piece goal.

I’ve said many times it’s about partnerships.  Yesterday the three of Dasilva, Paterson and Baker were poor 1st half hour, allowing time on the ball, runs off the back of them.  It needed Massengo to come out of position to help out.

I always thought Hunt played best with Watkins in front of him!!

I think Dasilva plays better with Eliasson in front of him, who seems to take up much more flexible positions on his natural side.  On the limited minutes Eliasson has played LWB, he has done okay too.

Depends by what you mean by technically?  Dasilva has wonderful touch.

Who has better ? What you are missing is some managers get the best out of the players on a game plan.

Leeds, WBA and Fulham easily have better squads. I would argue Brentford and Forest too. Basically we are about where we should be except we are playing poor football.
