I see the wall has collapsed along Cumberland rd. by Spike Island and has been closed to all traffic, as if parking and getting to the ground on match days was not bad enough.

use the swing bridge like in the old days...and not a scarf to be seen

I will "Take one for the team" This is the content from pop up central, as per @Bristol Robs message

One of the key routes into Bristol city centre will be closed ‘for the foreseeable future’ following a major collapse of the riverbank.

Cumberland Road has been closed this morning (January 24) and will remain so for what could be a very long time, following the landslip into the river overnight.

The Chocolate Path and harbour railway were already closed because of an underground landslip which council chiefs had allocated millions of pounds to repair.

But now the entire embankment has collapsed into the New Cut River Avon, and this has meant the closure of the road above too.

There are no reports of injuries or damage to property, and council chiefs said the area would be inspected to see if the road is safe to be driven on.

The road closure has affected two bus routes that use the road. The metrobus m2 from Long Ashton park and ride and the A1 airport bus - both of which use the new metrobus-only route across Ashton - have been diverted completely onto regular roads.

Five stops on the Ashton metrobus section and on Cumberland Road have closed, and the buses are using the A370 and Coronation Road to get into the city centre.

A spokesperson for Bristol City Council said: “Engineers are on site inspecting the damage and the road will remain closed for the foreseeable future while we inspect the stability of the network.”

The council closed the Chocolate Path and railway following subsidence back in December 2017, and the council first allocated £5 million to a project to restore it in January 2018.

But no actual physical work has taken place in the past two-and-a-bit years since then, and in September 2019, the council revealed the bill to fix it had gone up to £9 million.

Cabinet member for transport, Kye Dudd, said “We know the path is unsafe and as a safety precaution have kept it closed for some time.

“We have been working hard to plan repair works and tenders for the work have just closed.

“Over £9m has been allocated to repairs and maintenance of the Cumberland Road wall and Chocolate Path by Cabinet,” he added.

The river itself was created 200 years ago when the New Cut was dug to divert the river and create the floating harbour just to the north.

The Chocolate Path and railway line was installed along the northern bank along Cumberland Road in 1909.

The area that has collapsed is at the western end of that section around the Vauxhall Bridge area.

I work on Cumberland Road and we have been advised that by 2021 the road will become one - way, into the city , and away from AG, only. I reckon , once the repairs are done they will implement the one way system from then.

It needs to be rebuilt, repairs won’t cut it, and it begs the question, if they knew about the underground slip 2 years ago why didn’t they shut the road the and do something

this is typical Bristol city council reactive rather then proactive

If assholes could fly, then the Council House, or City Hall as that red trousered **** renamed it, would be busier than Heathrow.

Was their plans to cover up that part of the river and build a duel carriage way ontop linking up to the M32. It would be a good time to do it with the new devolpment they've got planned for the area. It will only cost a few billion

Can’t bring myself to even attempt the minefield that is the Bristol Post webpage, always makes me laugh when they quote “ everything we know” which is bugger all unless it’s been posted elsewhere previously.

As mentioned above this is typical BCC the chocolate path has been closed since the Metro bus works, why has it taken them this long to start work on a major commuter route in and out of the city when they knew full well there where problems?

We suffered nearly 3 years of roadworks at Temple Meads all to what end? The light sequences are all wrong causing congestion that it was supposed to solve, the money could of been put to much better use repairing Cumberland Road and the Cumberland Basin system but that  wouldn’t suit Marvin who wants to demolish the whole system and build some new houses that most Bristolians won’t be able to afford .

The whole road system around Temple Gate is an absolute joke!! ...as you say, the lights are not phased properly causing huge problems as traffic doesn’t flow !
Also, to get to Temple Meads from the A4 or A37 traffic has to go to Redcliffe church to come back on itself ...utter shambles

This is giving me flashbacks to when Bridge Valley Road was closed a few years back, again a job the council tried to do on the cheap and messed it right up and it ended up costing more and taking longer. BCC are not fit to run this City, they are totally inept and indecisive and keep on making expensive mistakes.

This road will now be closed for at least a year I'd say, not one I use very often but it is on the route of the Bristol 10k and Half Marathons so be interested to see what alternative route they will use for that.
