Averaging One Shot Per Hour in the Last 4 Games

How many times yesterday did we make half decent moves up the pitch, only to get in the opposition final third and rather than finding that final ball, turn around, pass back just to keep possession and end up back in our own half?

Is this an instruction, keep it rather than ping in a cross or are the players unable to pick out a final ball - are not enough options available?

Either way the lack of shots and chances is very poor indeed.

It would be nice to say that this has made our defence watertight, but this is not the case we have conceded more goals than anyone in the top half.

It's not unreasonable to question whether the current strategy is working and that is before one talks about entertainment.

The goal difference has regressed this season, suggesting indeed both aren't working.

Are you sure? We've had 21 shots in the past four games.

Think you might be referring to shots on target. We've had 6 of those in the past 4 matches.

But this minor niggle aside it's been clear for the entire season how shot shy we are. We're currently on 363 shots for and 544 against. We average 10 per match of which 3.2 will be on target. It's low.

Firstly, not arguing any of the points above....just wanted to point something out.

Yesterday we did actually go 61 minutes without a shot of any kind.  I’m not convinced Callum’s volley at the near post from Fam’s excellent cross, was his touch.  Thought it was the defender’s leg and should’ve been a corner.  Anyone there who had a better view?  If it wasn’t, then it was 71 minutes between the goal and Fam’s blocked header.

That really is unacceptable imho.

You're absolutely right. I'm never going to defend our shooting record this year. I've been tracking it all season and it's been atrocious. The players are clearly being told not to shoot from range, not to shoot first time, and to (using an old phrase) "walk it into the net".

It's an easy thing to change and I can't believe the coaching staff haven't tried releasing the shackles and letting us kick the ball towards the opposition's net a few times.

Your stats are correct, 21 in total, 6 on target in 4 matches and as you also say this has panned out over the whole season so it’s not a case of using selective statistics to beat the Manager over the head with,

It isn’t anywhere close to being good enough and as I’ve said before if you play this way and don’t win matches you will get beat up for it in the end.

The only thing about us that doesn’t resemble bingo numbers on a Saturday is our number of shots unless we start with “on its own......”............

Just read this statistic.

WTF are our coaching staff telling these people.

Its not as if we are shot shy, we just don’t create  the opportunities.

Do we have bad players all of a sudden? Or is this just our DNA....?

I've sussed our DNA. Do Not Attack.

What about our box entries though?

Like shots on target they're rationed - at least that's the only reason n I can think of for when having won a corner or free kick in an advance position WeeLee's default is NOT to convert into a 'box entry'.

Lee Harvey Oswald managed 3 shots, 2 of which were on target, in about 7 seconds. So he could bump off in excess of 500 heads of state in the time it takes us to test the opposition goalkeeper ONCE!!!

It's when it's put in this way that we can realize that we have a problem.

What are box entries?  Crosses, passes, corners, players going into the box. Are they our box, or the opposition box, there's too many questions and not enough  explanation. What must the players think. I once thought that LJ was trying to build a squad/team of intelligent players, who could think for themselves on the pitch and take control of the situation. That may have been the case early in his tenure, now we seem to have players looking for inspiration and frightened to take decisions. This results in them taking the easy decisions and letting others try to take the tougher decisions, perhaps because the players are publicly rebuked for making the wrong decisions.

But what about the Bloke from the less than grassy Knowle?

It doesn’t matter anymore, in LJ’s world of 2020, the whole idea of the game is now entering the box multiple times and running around like a fckn bee. He’s got his own league table for these things.

If you don't shoot you don't score.

If you don't score you'll probably lose.

That was taught to boys learning the game.

It's not that complicated really is it. We need to at least be able to create the opportunity to have a pop at the oppositions net at least more than what we are doing at present to have any chance of winning games, or as a minimum being competitive.

That lies purely at the management staff, with team selection and tactics.

We do have the players and quality available I'm sure, it's just linking it all together.
