BRISTOL86
Handshakes at the start then running round for 90 mins trying to cheat their fellow professionals and the referee wherever possible. Always struck me as an odd notion as for all this talk of respect, there is very little shown on the pitch.

As a youngster used to love booing the opposition when they came out first - when they changed it to coming out at the same time football lost something they’ve diluted the atmosphere even more with the whole handshake FairPlay procedure

miser
Couldn't they retain the handshake after their mothers have inspected their newly washed hands in the tunnel. Threat of no tea worked for me.

I used to love the teams running out, ramped up the atmosphere too. It’s all too polite now. Hate the handshakes, always have.

The teams come our separately after half time so the opportunity to boo/heckle the opposition is still there but nobody seems bothered these days, in fact many are still in the concourse. For some reason Downsy even pipes up entreating the crowd to welcome the opposition back on to the pitch in much the same way as he asks us to cheer 'your boys in Red', 'your Bristol City team' or whatever when City re enter the pitch. Please welcome back Birmingham/Derby etc. Any show of hostility towards the away team seems to be discouraged almost to the extent of being frowned upon - very strange considering the club apparently want AG to be a fortress. At the few games I'm able to make it back for these days (trapped in Sussex for most of the year), this has stood out to me as a really tangible change. Such a simple thing, too - it wasn't so many seasons ago that we'd have DL on the microphone before kick off, as the teams ran out of the Atyeo, through the flag waving (sometimes even fire wielding) ball boys & girls, welcoming on to the pitch, the opposition team..... and ... BRISTOLLLL CITYYYYY before launching straight into a rendition of One For the Bristol City that'd get everyone going. Of course, the opposition team would just run straight to the East End and get their travelling contingent going too. And then, before the atmosphere had a moment to subside, no messing around - game on. All around the ground it was a livelier atmosphere from the first minute of both halves of the game. Diluted now. Real shame.
Bazooka Joe
In bygone days Sunday League football, it was sometimes a head-butt or finger across the throat gesture. And that was in the friendly matches !

Guest
Should not the match ball be sanatised every time a throw in takes place, then there`s the goal celebrations (this will not effect us) all that touching; and of course the heading of the ball....sanatised headbands for everyone Sadly one over 70yr old has died (with underlying conditions) but I feel the media are going way over the top with this, when the common flu virus takes far more lives every day and doesnt get a mention.
