Euro 2020 delayed by a year.

This could become interesting....

FOOTBALL bosses are preparing to rip up the format for the Euros - and SCRAP some venues.

Uefa privately accept there is no way that next summer’s tournament - postponed because of Covid - will be able to go ahead with the planned 12 host cities.

A worst-case scenario could see one country stage the tournament with four venues being used.

Wembley is due to stage seven games, including England’s three group matches, plus the semi-finals and final.

The competition is sure to go ahead - owing to the millions Uefa will receive from TV companies.

And the governing body is hopeful supporters will still be able to attend.

But some venues are at risk and the tournament will have to be condensed to ensure less travelling.

Places such as Baku in Azerbaijan - now caught in a conflict with Armenia - plus St Petersburg in Russia will be among the first to be dropped.

Bilbao in Spain struggled to sell tickets so would also be in the firing line.

Uefa know they can complete a tournament in one country, with teams staying in bubbles.

Further meetings are due over the next few months.

51 matches total, that means 12-13 matches per stadium over 30 or so days. Doesn't the pitch need some time to recover, or can modern pitches take that frequency of matches?

not city related but a few follow the national team on here

really can’t see the tournament going ahead in its current format with the way things are going at the moment which wil be a shame . Looking at the England travel club forum general feeling is all behind closed doors or played in less countries then its current format.

why play it over so many different countries is beyond me and never going to be easy for travelling fans

Im guessing all these big events are harvesting their hopes on Oxford vaccine getting the green light, thats the game changer in my opinion, if that goes tits up then summer ruined again. Just my uneducated opinion

Price aside, why Oxford vaccine in particular? There are quite a few vaccines out there now...

Seemingly it was for some centenary. Current format though, Covid- no chance.

Little bit of background.

It was to be Platini's crowning glory. It would showcase the power and prestige of UEFA. What better way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Championship than with this dazzling spectacle?

That was the theory anyway. What Platini hadn't counted on was that he would have to resign in disgrace as UEFA president three years later after it emerged he had received a £1.3m payment from former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

60th Anniversary- interesting idea, in normal times!

Because we've bought 100 million doses and it is much easier to distribute. Also it's manufactured by a British company. No worries about specialist refrigeration. I do think we're hoping this one will be the main max vax option.

It's original inception was to celebrate the anniversary of the Euro tournament. Hence it being hosted by Europe as opposed to one/two nations.

Clearly times have changed dramatically since then and I'm sure they are already planning something if it looks like its not realistic to go ahead with the current plan.

Apologies mate, point is really that mass vaccination, with 2 doses, will be a logistical challenge. Achieving that that to an acceptable level, not only in the U.K., but across Europe by June/ July, might just be a tad optimistic.

Once they get the vaccine into people who are 60+ (And underlying health conditions) then with the economic and social problems that will be here long term because of all this, I don’t think they should realistically stop people living their lives again. The virus rarely kills anyone under 60 who is healthy so we need to get back on with life ASAP else there will be nothing to go back to. I would hope by May/June time we are ready to live again and not just exist. So really hope Euros can go ahead properly with fans although they may need to be in one country.

I like your optimism Alex but I fear that any global event in the next 6 months will need to be cancelled or played behind closed doors. The virus is still ripping through large parts of the world and it is not as if with huge events like this you can make a decision last minute. I'd imagine unless there is significant progress driving down case numbers and vaccinating huge swathes of Europe by March (something I'm very pessimistic about) it will be called.

Guess it depends on how quickly they can do it but that is why I say it could well be held in one country rather than round europe where there will be countries who are behind on it. If they can vaccinate the 15 million aged 60 or over (some people won't have it so replace them with clinically vulnerable etc) by end of April then I see no reason why it couldn't be held here with fans. We really do need to crack on with life asap else millions will be jobless, homeless and that doesn't take in to consideration everything else like mental health.

Do "unhealthy" people not matter as much? I get tired seeing this as some sort of justification and it particularly irks me as my close family member is high risk through no fault of his own.

Honestly think May is optimistic. I've already conceded that I wont be going to Glastonbury this year, IMO.

There shouldn't be any mass international travel while the pandemic is still alive. So even if its in one place, Im not sure fans should be allowed in.

Of course, happy to be proven wrong and see us at a managable level of cases with everyone over 60 vacinated by April

I said once the over 60s and those with underlying health conditions have it then we should carry on. Think that covers ‘unhealthy people’?

Yes sorry probably misinterpreted your first sentence.

it’s still around 20 million people over 60 and/or vulnerable, still a big task and that’s just this country. No idea how European countries vaccines are looking?

No idea on Europe but if Uk is ready then should be in a position to fully host if needs be at short notice.

Once you take off those who don’t want it etc it will be a fair bit less than 20 million (I read 15m somewhere) but yeh a huge task and sadly the government has been a shambles whole way through it despite what Pritti Parel said...

If that happened it could work, would we refuse entry to other fans somehow? Or a vaccine passport?

Hopefully we’re in a much better place by then, just a bit pessimistic as I never expected us to get a second wave and still be like this at Xmas

Personally I’m against all that but they might do it sadly. Or just say only fans from UK.
