The bit with Paradise Garage and maybe Boney Maronie (sp?).

Don't recall a record shop there.

Did used to go into Rival, was that on Park Street, other side from Forbidden Planet?

Was that Replay? Or was Replay the  other one, a bit further up Park Street from Tony's.

Wherever it was, I must've gone there plenty as I have at least 5 LPs with Replay stickers on them.

Lords of the New Church "Is Nothing Sacred" for a princely £2.79!

Tried to buy Alice Cooper's School's Out album in the old Virgin shop, i was a teenager and the girl / woman serving came back to me and told me they didn't have any of them with the original knickers sleeve. I'm sure i must have turned the brightest shade of red you could imagine   Just one of those snippets of life that you always remember for what ever reason. Loved that shop, was still good at the bottom of Union St. and even where Curry's ended up being. Went downhill after the Galleries was built.

I bet Made in Japan - Deep Purple sold a bomb, i always think of Woolworths and it being 99p or something. I never did buy it, strangely

I beg your pardon, it was 24 carat Purple

TBF it wasn't 68, but still bought it in early 70's . I was surprised I found it with the original sleeve .

Yeah, a good find. You're still old though  An old fart even?  For me, i still associate that underground original Virgin shop with punk and new wave happening.

Talking Revolver, my other claim to fame is that I bought the very first Roxy Music to be had in Bristol. Ordered it and had to wait for it to be delivered to the shop early Saturday morning. The guy told me I was the first to own a copy in Bristol!  Great album .

Did you buy it for the cover? :)

What was her name? She wasn’t Virginia “Plain” :)

I know I got that wrong last night. Virgin was opposite this place i'm talking about.  Both shops were  great though.

The original Virgin and the "Peel" place opposite, in later years.

I recall the Virgin store, corner unit at the far end of Broadmead from Debenhams, across from what became the Galleries? Don't remember another record store opposite.

Was there a record store up Union Street, other side from the Odeon? Or is my mind playing tricks on me?

No, no  this was back when Virgin was in the Bear Pit. There were two shops in there, but not at the same time. Virgin were there first, but moved to the bottom of Union st around 1978 ish i think

My god, i would kill for there to be loads and loads of music shops about like there used to be. I loved those places.

For Christmas last year my wife bought me a new deck, amp and speakers. I have loved being able to revisit my vinyl collection that was away in storage for 20 years.

I was in Halifax (Nova Scotia, not Yorkshire) for work a while back and wandering around town the first weekend I was there, I happened upon a vinyl store. Had not been in one for many years, and spent an age mooching about.

Right now, I treat myself to a purchase now and then from www.thesoundofvinyl.com

Certainly remember queueing outside the Virgin store to get tickets for the Clash for the Londons Calling tour in 79 so could be right on dates.

That's right. I remember buying tickets in that very same shop for various stuff. Happy memories.

Anyone remember the record shop in Picton Street that specialised in Reggae, Dub, Northern Soul etc, this would have been from the mid 70s?  Used to share driving duties to Ashton Gate with a few mates, one of whom was really into that genre, and always insisted on stopping there after a Saturday afternoon match, went in there few times but I was more interested in Punk/New Wave at that time.  Just can't remember the name of the place.

Also remember the Virgin shop in the bear pit, as mentioned this was by Paradise Garage. They outgrew that shop and moved into the Galleries, not sure if they had another outlet in Central Bristol in between.

I also remember the HMV at the bottom of Union Street, and getting my tickets for The Stones at Ashton Gate (1982) during my lunchbreak (used to work in Union St so quite handy).  They also hosted a few signing sessions, although never went to any. I remember The Thompson Twins causing a bit of stir with the sheer number of fans trying to get in (TTs were playing the Colston Hall that night) and, one to forget, Rolf Harris doing a book signing.

It is really bugging me that I can't remember the name of the Picton Street shop!!

No no, they moved to Union St first, and then to Broadmead by where the market is now, bang in the middle (well was i guess)and those were fine shops too.

HMV went in where the second Virgin shop was, I'm pretty sure... but now you've got me wondering if I'm confusing it with HMV

Were HMV on the corner of Union Street and Broadmead? I guess diagonally across from the Odeon?
