I've stuck up for him many times in the past and fully understood the reasoning for some of the things he had done/said. Nothing wrong with giving his kids an Irish history lesson but why stick it on social media while wearing a balaclava? the guy is asking for trouble

This in a nutshelll

The bloke moans about the abuse he gets and then puts something like that on his Instagram for no other reason than for provocation. He’s got the reaction he craved

Its been on threads on here before. He is an ira supporter. A ira supporter who chooses to earn his money in a country with the queens head on its ££. He could earn his money elsewhere.

Best he go back to his home country then, no Queen on the fivers there....oh wait.

A sad throwback who does nothing to help his country or his fellow Irish people.

Ireland is a wonderful country, who’s people make it, and other countries, richer for their interaction.

He could do so much good, yet this is how he chooses to define himself.

As I say, he is nothing other than part of the problem.

OTIK this man could play in the republic for stroke city. chooses not too. he could play around Europe chooses not to. he plays in England. cash before principles.

OK, let's say you send him home to earn his keep. I guess you have no issue with that?

Please let me know the currency he would be paid in if he turned out for Derry City.

OTIK what is your view on the bloke quoting the ira as he has done before, wandering around during minutes silences v being respectful and wearing balaclavas etc ?? are you sticking up for him? are you supporting him? He could really make a moral stand and play outside of the UK or another stand back to Derry and play in the republic. chooses not to.

My knowledge of him is limited to

- the annual furore about him not wearing a poppy. Which is fine by me, I don't wear a poppy either. So, if that counts as supporting him, so be it.

- this misjudged attempt at humour with his Instagram post.

Otherwise I have no skin in this particular game: don't recall hearing him interviewed (I have lived overseas for 20+ years) and I've never met the guy.

Stupidity isn't punishable by death. If it was, there would be a hell of a population drop.

And that's a quote by the way

A friend shared a facebook post from someone who works in refuse collection/disposal. In the last 2 weeks they have seen a 30% increase in fresh food being thrown away, as it's past it's sell by date. A post on Facebook today showed a wheelie bin packed to the top with fresh food being thrown away.

Stood in the queue to get into Morrisson's yesterday ( well done to all their staff for being so organised and disciplined, despite the risk they are taking just now) , and the lady behind me mentioned that one of her friends is a delivery driver for another supermarket. Before the lockdown she was delivering a huge shopping delivery to a customer and through the window could see the front room piled high with toilet rolls.

She also mentioned that one of her neighbours bought a load of flour and yeast as she was worried she wouldn't be able to get bread in the supermarket. The neighbour asked her if she had a recipe for making bread in the microwave as she doesn't really know how to use an oven!

The current situation has and will bring out the best in many, but has also exposed the worst in far too many.

Not really answering @Three Lions question there @One Team In Keynsham

Your posts are bordering on defending the guy, of course we all have different beliefs etc due to when and where we grew up.

I do defend his decision to not wear a poppy. I stopped wearing one years ago, though last year I did wear a purple one for the 1st time.

I don't defend his misplaced attempt at humour in this Instagram post. Although the caveat there is that humour is personal: I can laugh at things that other people may find abhorrent, distasteful, offensive, whatever.

I do defend his right to ply his trade in the UK, whether that is NI or England. I don't support the monarchy, but it doesn't cause me a moral dilemma by drawing a salary in sterling.

I don't know anything of his other actions quoted by @Three Lions so I can't comment on those.

Apologies - was responding to comment about people acting stupidly during coronavirus pandemic - which is what McLean has done.

Won't do it again.

The problem, as ever, is extremes. Every November my Facebook  goes into meltdown with mates going ballistic over this guy's decision not to wear a poppy, yet the same mates often post 'jokes' about the British Army killing various different nationalities and members of certain religions.

It's a two way street, for every action there is a reaction. There is absolutely no doubt that Britain has a shameful past when it comes to Ireland, but that goes back hundreds of years and people have to move on.  Its now over 20 years since the Good Friday agreement and I don;'t think anyone could argue that things have definitely improved, draw a line under it all, if Martin McGuiness and Ian paisley were able to do that, then so should those on both sides of the divide. McClean might have a wider point on the fact that people need to be more aware of the history but his post was a dumb way of getting that across.

Yes, as if you ask him where he is from he is going to say Northern Ireland isn’t he....

Last time I looked Londonderry was NI. Course there are those there who want out the UK altogether, but that's a different debate...

Think Catholics may refer to it as Derry, even if Londonderry is its official name.

Could always dispose of both McLean and the issue by giving Derry/Londonderry to Republic of Ireland and transferring him to play there.

Everyone's a winner. @Lewisdabaron and The Gasbuster to name two no longer need get irked by his nonsense in English Leagues. :whistle2:

McClean wouldn’t accept that there is a country called Northern Ireland, or a city called Londonderry. So I’m really struggling to see what your point is here?

A good friend of mine is from Roscommon, he maintains that Londonderry is a unique word in the English language, with the first 6 letters all being silent.

That aside, anything to suggest he denies the existence of the country he was born in, and who he represented at U21 level (I've just had a read on his wiki page)? I have no doubt he supports a united Ireland, but that is not the same thing.

Indeed, seems odd (to me anyway) he would make donations to charitable organisations based in a country that doesn't exist:

"McClean has made a number of charitable donations to the less fortunate in society. He made a significant donation to homeless people at the Wells and Foyle Valley House in Derry.[110] He donated £1,500 for a custom hand cycle bike help a child who was suffering from Spina Bifida.[111] He made another significant donation to the Wells facility in the Bogside, for up to 24 men who have alcohol problems.[112] He paid £1,750 for a new mobile home after hearing about a pregnant homeless woman's struggles on social media.[113] He donated £1000 to help pay for specialist proton therapy in Florida for a four-year-old child suffering from cancer.[114] He donated €1,200 to help pay for the funeral of a two-year-old boy who was struck by a car.[115] In December 2016 he set up a new clothing line with proceeds going to help homeless residents of his native Derry.[116] He donated £500 to an online fund set up to support the family of a missing Derry man.[117]"

It's not exactly a period of history that we British can look back on with any sense of pride...

Nor Irish pride for that matter , Republican terrorist killing many 100s even 1000s of innocent people.

Doesnt the swatika mean well being?

Yes the Nazis stole it but that doesnt mean we should be repulsed by the symbol  that symbol was brutalised for a short period of its history. Buddhists Hindus jains and many more use the swatika to mean well being and have done so for centuries before anyone even thought of a nazi.

It's time the world was taught the proper meaning of symbols.

The Swastika was hijacked correct. But that is not my point here. My point is clear and well made.

Surely it's a matter of personal opinion what the poppy symbolises to them.

It symbolises a whole lot more than just the armed forces. So yes it does matter. If he is against it then, by definition, he is spitting on the grave of an Irishman. He is obviously an ignoramus so we must forgive him.

The poppy is worn to show support for the Armed Forces.  McLean doesn’t want to support the Armed Forces for obvious reasons.  I respect his decision to not wear one. He has gone a bit far with this social media post though.

Amongst others per above.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, he's a bellend. No need to go in as hard as he does and clearly enjoys winding people up.

But I can respect his decision not to wear a poppy. It would be exactly the same as Brit playing in Germany being forced to wear a Swastika, (I'm not comparing the poppy to a swastika and wear mine with pride, before some melt gets their knickers in a twist)

Outrageous thing to say, you claim to know your history I suggest you need a little more education.

My Grandad (now passed on ) a catholic was born in Cork when Ireland was still part Britain and he told me stories of the Black and Tans growing up , however at the outbreak of WW2 he joined up and fought for this country like many others from the Republic and my Great Grandfather an Irishman , join an Irish regiment  also fought in France during The Great Was  so don't you dare compare the poppy to the swastika .

Poppy is worn as an act of remembrance for ordinary men and women who laid down their lives . It is not a support for the Army or Government or any institution.

I didn't, you absolute tool. I work with the military on a daily basis. I am well aware of their sacrifices and their brilliance and I do more to keep them safe than you, so I'm quite content with my contribution to our country. Are you?

I'm fairly objective over it but people who may have nationalist sympathies generally may not be.

McLean is a dick but people who have nationalist sympathies can tend to be one eyed.

Doesn't explain why his balaclava has two eye holes …. (or, come to think of it, why would a normal family man own a balaclava in the first place.... thats a question worth asking, odd to say the least)
