Thats why they should have had the self employed sorted before announcing a lock down. Had a fit out tomorrow booked in took 3 days to build in the workshop. Van loaded out for the morning, customer rings and cancels after tonight's announcement.

Robin-hugh-blind
Going to work tomorrow, Self employed damp proofer I believe it is very much 'essential' that I put food on the table for my family. And that I am a 'key worker' in the regards to feeding and housing my family. It is unbelievable that the self employed have been left behind in all of this. We will have to pay for the 80% wage subsidy for the employed in our next tax returns. Yet we get no help. Creating a massive devide in society. I have supported the government vigorously (even on this forum) I have not got savings to fall back on. The closure of builders merchants WILL leed to looting if this is not resolved very quickly. There are many in a far worse position than me. But expect a huge self employed back lash. Forget us at your peril !

How could it possibly be monitored how many periods of exercise a person who wants to be out takes a day. Dogs have to be walked, horses exercised etc, some more than once a day I've seen. One of my neighbours walks her little dog every couple of hours, doesn't ever go far but out often for a short length of time. He' s a yappy little thing, the dog not the neighbour, so I think he's just taken out to keep him quiet. I think he's spoilt rotten and bored stiff, quite sad really. Don't know how he will be if he doesn't go out more than once a day!

LondonBristolian
Sorry if someone has posted this already but Germany and Italy have evidence that the number of cases may be levelling off. If so, it will be proof that social distancing and the lockdowns do work over time. At the same time, it may lead to real questions for those countries that did not adopt these measures early on. There may be massive differences in loss of life between countries and that will lead to questions.

Probably for them to save money more than limiting the spreading of the virus as less busses on Sunday service means more people on each one! Same as the London tubes then. PHILINFRANCE
10 hours ago, downendcity said: I think I have got these figures right, but our new local hospital, that opened in 2010, had build costs of about £300m However PFI costs £40m a year, so over the next 30 years will have cost the trust a total of £1.2bn! If that were a mortgage (which is essentially what it is) then there is the equivalent of £900m interest charged on the original £300m PFI borrowing. There were a lot of new hospitals built during that time, all with PFi finance, so it doesn't take a genius to work out how much this is costing the NHS. Not only that, but everything within the hospital has to be done through the PFI company. So when my wife was working as a medical secretary, if they needed a shelf putting up it would cost a few hundred pounds, so you can imagine what sort of costs are being incurred for work and maintenance, on an ongoing basis. I can relate to that. I work in insurance and, shortly before leaving the UK for France (late 1990s), I witnessed PFI hospital insurance claims where, following, e.g. water damage, replacement light bulbs were costing circa £100 each. When I tried to protest that such costs were preposterous, I was shown contractual evidence that these sums (labour plus materials) had already been agreed, with a built-in inflationary increment to boot, when the contract was signed. It is fortunate for such PFI establishments that their insurance cover is, effectively, state-sponsored, for the private market would just not wear it. The canals in Venice for example are now apparently clear and populated with fish, swans and even dolphins - those canals were like mud and stank to high heaven in places when I was there a couple of years ago. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/20/nature-is-taking-back-venice-wildlife-returns-to-tourist-free-city I think the mindset of people will change, for instance I won't be using the pub as much when they are back open - saving a few quid a month in the process. I don't miss it at all. Similarly, going to football - its apparent that it isn't really that important and I've not missed that either. I'll still go when it starts back up but maybe not as much as I did. Things I am missing is socialising with friends and family and its hammered home how important their well being and company is over other things. But I'm sorry to say that the same morons who are selfishly defying advice and bulk buying etc will not change as they haven't changed during this crisis - they've just become worse arseholes than they were before and will be the same arseholes when this is all over. It was a lovely story, but, unfortunately, there were no dolphins.

There never is any dolphins...paid a fortune over the years to see them in various places abroad. BUT finally got to see loads for free at Mwnt Beach in Pembrokeshire from the beach/cliff last summer - apparently the largest pod of bottle nose dolphins in Europe. Anyhow, it does appear that there is an environmental positive from what is a terrible time.

I would have thought this is the preclude to full 'lockdown' in all honesty. People will be looking for ways around this and it will end in total lockdown once the government have time to be more specific about quite a few things. No doubt there will be certain announcements tomorrow. Given the parliamentary debate this evening about additional powers, I would be pretty confident full lockdown is extremely close, whatever that means.
