Wasn’t it one of the very few times we gone done on our patch when Cardiff came over for a League Cup tie around that time?  It was an early round, and think we won the first leg convincingly at their place. The second leg was seen by me, and others, as a non-event. Didn’t even bother going, which was unusual for a local derby.

For whatever reason, Cardiff decided to come in big numbers and ran riot around Bedminster area. Wasn’t there something like 100 odd arrests, including the son of a famous Welsh footballer.

Can’t recall many others running amok in BS3.... although the usual suspects Millwall, Brum have caused a few anxious moments.

As I recall it, there were 200 arrested and taken to Broadbury Rd, before being either charged or released.

A few years after 1970 and many more than 100 arrests iirc. - 173 is the number that sticks in my mind.

The incident made the national news as the most arrests ever at a football match.

Think fans were fighting in a road near AG and the police decided to close off the road at both ends with vans and horses and(somehow) arrested everybody within.

The vast majority Cardiff fans, but some City too.

Think only a relatively small number were actually charged in the end though.

Got told once on "very" good authority Oxford couldn't be budged out of the east end.....

Somewhat bizarrely, I can remember Huddersfield taking the central block too in the early days.

It was Brum that gave us the wake up call from my recollection. Massive numbers turned up in the East End in the  late 60’s. Lost my scarf that day and - the embarrassment of it- me and a few others were escorted out of the East End by the police ‘for our own safety’  to the Open End. The only compensation being a claim to be one of the original Park Enders, although certainly no badge of honour.

Odd that later in life, when living in the Midlands, I played football in the same team with several Brummies who were top blokes and immensely entertaining.

73-74, most of that number were arrested for smashing windows along Cumberland Rd after the game, so unlike Cardiff eh? smashing things up?

Was that the same game that they were provoked very much by a chant sung by City in bad taste?

The Cardiff fans were also chanting about the Swiss air disaster iirc., can't remember which set of fans chanted first.

No excuses either way - shameful behaviour from a small number of fans from both sides that day.

Went to that match with my Dad, it was just after the start of the season, and we were desperate for a football fix.  After the game, we were stuck in traffic - I think it was along Coronation Road - with fans battling amongst the cars, dustbins being thrown, along with anything else people could get their hands on.  Luckily our car remained unscathed.

I believe it was the son of John Charles who was amongst those arrested.

I've got the programme for that game and in the notes it says the Dolman Stand was "nearly completed" although I believe it was being used for the first time that season (70/71), Cardiff was the 2nd home game and probably the 2nd time it was used, the first game that season was against Sunderland.

Galley and Toshack, were they playing? 2 of my fav players from that time

and they won 4-0  !  But don't think it was a night game .

I remember Oxford being in the middle of the East End, but then they decided to run out (Being hotly pursued) towards the Dolman end at, or just after, halftime?

Yes, that would have been circa 73. They were very mouthy till the "bigger boys" arrived . A couple started legging it, closely followed by the rest, all scrambling over the EE/Dolman corner gate, funny as   !      As I remember it, they made their excuses and left before kick-off .

They were in the block to the left of central as you look out to the pitch. I know, I was stood adjacent to them and, was ejected for smacking one in the face out of frustration when they scored their fourth goal. I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.

That definitely happened with Sunderland and I believe Huddersfield left early after an initial resistance.

Think the short lad at the front may be quite a well known character !!

Looks like John Feeney standing to the right of Angus.

Great guy with a smashing sense of humour, whose brothers were good friends of mine.

I think one of the brothers is immortalised in a book about Arsenal fans in the 70s. One of the Gooners recalls a demented City nutter biting chunks out of them during a flare up in a pub near the Gate.

How do you remember the build up play to City’s goals 50 years ago?

I can’t even remember some of the goals from this season!

Just one of those that stuck in the memory, Lew. Back then football and music were pretty much my sole interests, so not much else to clutter the memory banks in those simpler times.
