Fun football challenge

This was sent to me last night and tougher than it appears:

Name your best World Football X1 - in their positions - that have played while you have been alive....but no 2 players can be from the same country or have played for the same club

ie - if you pick Zidane in midfield you can't have any other Frenchman or anyone else who played for Real Madrid, Juventus, (or Bordeaux!)

It has to be a strong 11

Had a go at this last night. My side is a bit heavy on attacking players, but has a strong defence to make up for that!

Lev Yashin

Philip Lahm

Paolo Maldini

Frank Arnesen

John Charles

Bobby Moore

Jimmy Johnstone

Jean Tigana

Pele

Lionel Messi

Eusebio

Can’t have that team. Terry and De Bryne both played for Chelsea.

That's exactly the reason I discounted De Bruyne originally :grr: replaced one player and thought 'oh I can have De Bruyne again now'

I originally had Cafu right back as forgot he played for Milan. Couldn’t be bothered to think of another good one so just went with Gary Kelly !

You saw Lev Yashin play? Was he as good as everyone says?

The challenge - as it was issued on Twitter - was to have players who played in your lifetime/era, so it's not necessary to have seen them live  but in this case I did watch the 1966 World cup on TV as a 12 year old boy and saw Yashin play. I don't remember much from over 50 years ago but he was considered the best in the world at the time and has topped various polls as best ever GK & 4 World Cups so I'll go with that.

I don't recall seeing Puskas or Charles in a full match on TV but there's plenty on YT.   The remarkable thing about John Charles was that he was equally good at centre half and centre forward and whilst at Juventus he would often start at CF - score to put them 1 up - and then play the second half at centre half and stop any chance of an equaliser as he won every tackle and header!   We could try that with Fammy.....but it's the scoring to go 1 up bit that let's down that theory.

Yeah I don’t think it means you have to have been at a live game to watch them. If that was the case my team would be awful!

My grandad was Welsh and he talked about John Charles as if he was god!

This was so, so hard. To pick a team that can actually defend as well as attack is mindbendingly difficult. I figured I had to pick Messi and Ronaldo who are the best I have ever seen and everything else was just working around that. I had Neuer in goal for ages, but just couldn't think of anyone better than Mattheus to complement Gazza and Dunga in the middle. The drop off to Akinfeev isn't that big... is it?

1.  Igor Akinfeev         CSKA/Russia
2.  Dario Srna             Hadjuk/Shakhtar/Cagliari/Croatia
3.  Paolo Maldini         Milan/Italy
4.  Dunga                    Internacional/Coirinthians/Santos/Vasco Da Gama/Pisa/Fiorentina/Pescara/Stuttgart/Jubilo Iwata/Brazil
5.  Virgil Van Dijk       Groningen/Celtic/Southampton/Liverpool/Netherlands
6.  Vincent Kompany   Anderlecht/SV Hamburg/Man City/Belgium
7.  Cristiano Ronaldo  Sporting Lisbon/Man U/Real/Juve/Portugal
8.  Paul Gascoigne     Newcastle/Spurs/Lazio/Rangers/Boro/Everton/England
9.  Kylian Mbappe       Monaco/PSG/France
10. Lionel Messi          Barca/Argentina
11. Lothar Matthaus    Monchengladbach/Bayern/Inter/Germany

I'd forgotten they'd gone slumming it to the tosh that was New York Cosmos at the end of their careers. I'll have to replace the Kaiser with Lucas Radebe then, who as far as I know played only for the Kaiser Chiefs and dirty Leeds.

Could not see that there was a thread on it. Gets your brain working this morning. Trickier than it sounds.

Select a world 11 (proper formations too) of players who have played in your lifetime but there are 2 conditions.

Only one player per country and once selected, you cannot select another player who has played for any clubs they've played for. So for example, if you select Thierry Henry, you cannot have any other French players nor anyone who has ever played for Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona and any other clubs he played for. And if you want Cristiano Ronaldo, no other portugese players and no-one who has ever played for Sporting Lisbon, Man Utd, Real Madrid or Juventus.
