Always liked Dave Edmunds' version of the Elvis Costello track Girls Talk. To come up with better than Mr Costello takes some doing. But my personal favourite is Talking Heads' cover of Al Green's minor hit Take Me to The River. With covers it's a question of either reproducing it in a similar manner or a completely different take on it and Talking Heads did the latter brilliantly.

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From My Friends

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

This was my first thought when I saw the thread title, then his performance of it at Woodstock took it to another level!

The versions of AATW by Dylan and Hendrix sound like 2 completely different songs, but both brilliant in their own way.

The Clash - I Fought The Law

The Clash - Police and Thieves

The Clash - Police On My Back

Audioweb - Bankrobber

I think a lot of people don't realise that I fought the law was a cover version, they made it their own.

Also Take Me to the River - Talking Heads

I love a lot of Prince stuff but his original version of Nothing Compares 2U sounds dreadful compared to the Sinead O' Connor version.
