Palace - Dubious Claim?

Haven't seen this on here, but Crystal Palace are laying claim to be the oldest professional football club. Apparently a Crystal Palace football club was formed in 1861 - pre Notts County. The original teams pitch was used for football and cricket. To save the cricket pitch, they took a 20 year "holiday" from football in 1875 and played just cricket instead. The Crystal Palace Stadium (old FA Cup final venue, not Selhurst Park) opened in 1895 and a Crystal Palace football team "resumed" playing football there. Palace are claiming that the original footballers just carried on playing cricket instead and they are therefore the oldest professional team. I can't see it myself as they weren't a football club for 20 years. Then again, if land used as a tip less than 20 years previous can be called a village green, then I guess anything goes, if you put the right spin on it.
