Got no real problem with Swindle (they are a non-entity to me) but Lee Power seems a total *** !

Don't think that feeling is reciprocated from their side.

A few years ago I met a relative from Trowbridge for the first time in decades at a family funeral. He was well into family history and we got on well so we arranged for him to bring his family round for a meal to discuss our common ancestry further.

So a few weeks later he turned up with his son (in his 20's) and wife. All going swimmingly until his the son mentioned he supported Swindon. Feigning interest, I said, 'Oh, right they're not doing too badly this season, are they? We all support Bristol City'. His face changed, 'I can't stand Bristol City', the uncouth individual muttered, and to his Dad's embarrassment - he had little interest in football - sat there looking pissed off and not saying another word for the rest of the evening!

We might have no particular problem with Swindon but BCFC seem to be near the top of their list of hated rivals.

I can only speak about the fans I know and socialise with for 45 years and there is no hate with yourself only friendly banter along with being slightly envious of where you are now and how stable you are under a decent chairman

I come from the area and I can tell you now, they really really do not like City. I think a lot of our fans who live in the area also cant stand Swindon. Some are real part time fans, will say they like Swindon when they are 'doing well'.

Generally from fans I have known I would say a few are worse than Rovers fans with their dislike.

However I actually respect their fans who support them as would rather them support Swindon in the area than Man Utd or Liverpool.

Dont let anyone be fooled..... they hate us...! Just like Holloway hates us!

We are joint second on their hatred list... behind Oxford and joint with Gillingham....

The one thing I did like is the valuation of them.... not even a Kalas.... ??

I will certainly be letting them know the next the inbreads and roundabouts start spouting on.... ;) keep safe all.

In all seriousness, it's not something I take any joy in hearing. No matter how much you dislike a club (and I even include the gas in this), not only are livelihoods at risk but also something deeper, that being the sacred emotional bond fans have to their clubs (no matter how distasteful that club might be to us). Wouldn't wish for anyone to crash out of existence, and with our history we should know better than most!

I don't see them as a rival, they are just another team in the coutry

Losing a football club is a massive thing

Joint second? From the fans I know we are Number 1.

Same here, I've always just thought of them as a local-ish team so the chance of a bigger attendance both home and away - but a rival, no way! I consider Millwall more a rival!

I think there's a temptation to invent rivalries when you're deprived of your more traditional derbies,  and that's kind of happened over the course of this century. I'm not buying it!

Gillingham. How random is that!?

Having been a former resident of Oxford, I can confirm that big one is Oxford/Swindon.

Personally the only Thing i liked about them was the guy who married a city supporter that came on here a while back....Otherwise not having to go there again in any capacity is a chore that will not be missed.

You're correct the big one is Oxford, Reading never get a mention  and the Gillingham thing goes back to 1979 but there's nothing really there anymore as most of the idiots involved are probably too old now!

apparently genuinely very feisty is there rivalry with Gillingham, dates from a match in the 70s i think. Love a random, weird hatred!

my own experience of Swindon fans is they come as one of two types: Resent every last breath we draw, or happy to engage is rational discussion and banter. Those who actually  live IN Swindon are better than those who live in the likes of Calne

Yep, the way you come over on here Shaun I've no doubt that if we met at a funeral, found we were related, and I invited your family over for a meal to discuss shared ancestry you ( or any of your family) would not go into an oafish huff should it transpire I supported Bristol City. Instead I'm sure you would be more than happy to have a friendly chat with a fellow football fan.

Other replies to this thread, along with my own experience, do indicate there may be a considerable number of Swindon fans who would differ in that respect though! ?

I've know doubt that we would get.on and share all sorts of stories including football and yes there are haters from both sides but they tend to be the ones I wouldn't socialise with in life and don't judge a person on who they support

He was a good poster, and I have often wondered why he stopped posting.

I seem to recall it ended when we got promotion, so presumably due to a lack of genuine rivalry - unless married life has left him somewhat fatigued....

I'd say that's about right.

Living in Trowbridge I know there are probably as many City supporters here as Swindon. I've never had any problem only banter. Been fun looking at them for a good few years especially when the Swindon train is just after the Bristol train!!

Probably because power owes money left right and centre and if this sale goes through it lines his pockets and not those he owes money to.

Maybe they will be back on channel 5 again.....can't pay we will take it away?

Isn't that where the Baliiffs went into the trophy room and said "Bugger, Someone's beaten us to it!! ?

Why such a large amount of Swindon fans in Trowbridge ? Is it a Wiltshire thing, or a legacy from the Premier League season ?

Trowbridge is actually a bit closer to Bristol whichever way you go, and in reasonable striking range of Southampton if you fancy a spot of Prem glory.
