Time For Warnock

Every time I've seen a Warnock team, I've thought to myself 'I'm glad City don't play that way'.

Fortunately, I've only had to put up with watching his teams no more than twice a year.

The thought of having to watch more than two matches with him in charge chills me to the bone.

No I don’t either but you get my point in the full sentence, all the moaning about Warnock happens away from the clubs he’s involved with.
I’d love him here, playing positive uncomplicated football with a purpose.

The football we’ve had to endure under LJ has been dire over the last couple of years - but I’ve long held the view that the thought of serious success to many of our fans seems to “chill them to the bone” - I don’t know why, they put down, ridicule, criticise and reject any suggestions to bring in a proven, experienced, successful manager.

Neil Warnock has been a football manager for well over three decades and he averages a promotion every four seasons ... yet so many of our fans just totally reject that record whilst “hilariously” referring to him as ‘Colin’ - he’s a born winner who has never hidden his desire to manage our football club - but the ‘wise’ ones amongst our support reject any mention of his name, but I bet a big % of those haven’t got a clue that Neil Warnock is the most successful manager in this country’s history, with regards to promotions won ...

We miss that level of confidence/arrogance. Warnock would be the same as Cotts in the way he came in and just assumed promotion was going to happen s as. Knew he was capable.
Everything since has been shrouded in insecurity, caution and “steady progress”.
Warnock would just get on with it*.

*sadly I don’t think we’ll ever see it.

Unfortunately we're a few weeks too late. No doubt in my mind that if NW had been hired at the restart after the Covid lockdown we would have made the playoffs.

I wouldn't have bet against us winning them too. The man gets results and players love playing for him and always put in that extra 10%.

One season, one target..... promotion.

LJ divided fans. Who cares. Everyone wants the same thing and NW is totally proven, more than any other candidate.

He's literally just taken a different job...

He’s brought academy through at other clubs.

At Sheffield Utd he halved his transfer budget to invest the other half in the academy.

Never knew that about Sheffield United- knew he treated them as a medium-long term project but that's a great little nugget about transfer budget! He did give a number of young players a go there.

I know he brought through players at Crystal Palace too- and his QPR side that went up, albeit with one of the biggest budgets a decade ago with Taarabt certainly weren't dull!

His style seems to have in general got more pragmatic and less youth orientated over the years though- not for me certainly.

Totally different levels in fairness. I see what you are getting at and he did brilliant work, Cotts- but we had the pick, pretty much in League One- totally different ball game at this level- but we do need something different and now we will get it!

What did he say about warnock

Check out the OSIB interview.  Adel Taarabt spat at one of the female canteen staff at QPR.  Senior players including Orr wanted to sort him out but Warnock stopped them because Taarabt was too valuable to their promotion push.  Others may see that as good management.  I don't.

If I recall correctly, generally, Orr didn't seem impressed with Warnock

Get your point but plenty of teams get out of this division wit comparable budgets to City’s.
I think the point is that finishing 8th and hoping to, maybe, make 6th isn’t the right mentality.... if we want to get promoted, say it and act like it and go for it.
Do we really want promotion? Well that’s another question!

The thread is about Warnock, not LJ.

However, I'm happy to engage on NW record.

Statistics trotted out as evidence that something 'might' happen can be turned around e.g. NW has an average rate of not being promoted 3 out of 4 seasons in charge. When viewed this way, does this change anything? How was the 'every promotions average calculated' e.g. his last promotion was Cardiff 2018, the promotion before that was 2011 - that's not an every 4 seasons average.

Would he need two seasons (at best) to get us promoted if taken on? Would he bugger off (I believe he's not been shy in stating that he's looking to retire soon) before the 'project' is complete. I would question his motives on this front i.e. would he really be looking at the good of our club or would he be looking at the last big payoff to his retirement fund. This man is approaching his sell by date, if he hasn't already gone past it.

Just what is NW record of keeping teams promoted? Is this in keeping with his 'born winner' record?

Would he even fit in with BCFC?

From what I've seen of him lately, he's a specialist in keeping teams up and nothing more.

As to his approach?
I was at the Rotherham game where the player went down for about 8 minutes. I genuinely thought the guy was injured but all of a sudden, he was up like Lazarus but I don't remember seeing Jesus there to revive him. Stuff like that only comes from one person and I suspect that is where NW got his moniker of Colin.

I know what this thread is about but I was replying to a post that was slagging off Warnock’s style of play - I thought it pertinent to point out that the football we’ve had to endure under LJ over the past couple of years has been dire as the poster to whom I was replying clearly thought we’ve been playing silky, beautiful stuff under LJ.

As for ‘keeping teams up’  - I’ve consistently said on here for years that Warnock is not the manager to keep you in the premier league but he will probably get you there quite quickly. And you say his recent record suggests he’s a “specialist in keeping teams up (in the championship) and nothing more”? He last promoted a club to the premier league in 2018 ...

People complain about all the excuses LJ gave and now want Warnock ?

Warnock is a manager of achieving little things at steady rate and would need a few season at any club to get the best out of them. He has a talent of being super natural and laid back and he makes his players the agressors and all the teams he has coached / managed seem to break down teams they Play against fairly easy. However we need to look far more higher than Warnock like Houghton or Allardyce. I truly believe if Houghton or Allardyce was with us we would guarantee a play off spot in 2021, promotion in 2022. And either of these two could keep us in a mid table position quite comfortably 2023 and 2024.

As indicated, I'm not a fan of Warnock and his record, in my view, is overstated. NW is probably a nice fella but I'd not like him to be managing BCFC, it's a personal thing.

Silky football is over-rated (I can appreciate it but it's something to aim for when you have an established team in the Premiership - play it at this level and you'll have your team pilfered by the elite). And I don't think BCFC have ever played silky football.

LJ, in my view, got sacked because he'd become hackneyed and a caricature: young, up and coming, modern etc. He overspent on these characteristics and not delivered. This is not to say that he won't be a good manager in future but we'll have to see how he takes his 'sacking'.

I've got nothing more to say on this thread.

Warnock’s record can’t be ‘overstated’ - it’s fact - his achievements are real and cannot be disputed - eight promotions is eight promotions ... it’s interesting that you admit your views on Warnock are nothing to do with football, it’s a ‘personal’ thing with you yet you’ve never met him ... and it’s good that you agree that our club hasn’t played the sort of ‘silky, beautiful’ football that some to think we have done recently - yet they slag off the robust, streetwise, effective style of play employed by proven, experienced managers. I totally agree with your view on why LJ was sacked, but, as you pointed out to me, above, this thread is about Warnock not LJ ...

The degree of Warnock love on this forum is frankly embarrassing.

If we had better refs and retrospective cards given for simulation, time-wasting and other forms of cheating, Warnock would not have achieved half of what he has.

I'm glad we will never have to see a City side play his brand of anti-football.

But not long-term success.

I slated Warnock in my first post, but where I'll give him plaudits is in the way he can galvanize a team under the cosh. The "firefighter manager" who can pick up unfancied players who've experienced multiple losses and give them self-belief again. He IS Mr Motivator for underperforming players. He does build team morale.

I really rate that side of his game. It's something Lee Johnson cannot do.

But I can't condone a manager who asks his players to feign injuries etc. It's not what the game should be about.

I agree with this and think it sums up Warnock pretty fairly. However the gamesmanship side of things is something we are very naive about and it frequently catches us out and wears us down. Maybe we need to be a bit more savvy and do it to other teams. I hate that side of football but maybe if you can't beat them, join them.
